Blacksmith John Wellington flees from Virginia when he kills two men in a quarrel, leaving behind his young son, John, Jr., who is reared by Sir George Thorne, the town's richest citizen, as it was in Thorne's defense that Wellington became involved. The adult Johnny goes to New Mexico looking for Thorne's daughter who married a man named Winters against her father's will. The daughter has died and Winters, now known as Gentry, occupies a ranch with their daughter Gail. Johnny's father, now using the name of Rand, is head of an outlaw gang, but friendly to the Gentrys. Johnny eventually discovers that Gale is Thorne's grand-daughter, and Rand comes to realize that Johnny is the son he was forced to abandon years ago. Trent and his gang of outlaws surround the cabin where Johnny, his father and Gale have taken refuge.
