Betty Grable On The Rise
boblipton7 July 2019
Betty Grable is much taken with Arthur Jarrett, the richest man in town. To impress him, she invites him to tea, and her friends agree to play her servants. One of them is a chauffeur, so he borrows his boss' car and house for the charade. Both turn out to be Jarrett's in this amusing Columbia musical short.

It's directed by Archie gottler, a songwriter who directed a few short subjects for Columbia. His his earlier UMPA, the characters speak in rhymes.

1934 was a good year for Betty Grable's career. Not only did she get a number in THE GAY DIVORCEE, singing and dancing "Let's K-nock K-nees" with Edward Everett Horton, but she had definitely risen out of the chorus and bleached her hair. Although Jarrett, a popular radio singer, was credited above her, this is definitely her movie.

Betty Grable was more than able, but it took some years for her success to be stable.

Warning: Spoilers
Ironically, it's the dialog here that is rhythmic rather than the songs in this two reel musical where the future pin-up girl, then only a teenager, got to begin to strut her stuff. The same year, she sang and danced with Edward Everett Horton in "The Gay Divorce", but she had already been around in movie choruses since the beginning of talkies. As the title character, she's a flirtatious co-ed out on the town with the wealthiest boy in town, and she bites off more than she can chew when she invites him over for tea, giving the impression that she's high society too, utilizing friends as her chauffeur and maids. Being pre-code, this gets a bit racy, with a male bank clerk who is more than just a little bit flamboyant. Grable's charm is evident, so this has more than just historical value.
