This film did very well at the box office, earning RKO a profit of $350,000 ($7.7M in 2023) according to studio records.
RKO borrowed Jean Arthur from Columbia and William Powell from MGM for this film. Powell had a clause in his contract that he would not be lent out without his consent, but he really liked the script. Also, MGM boss Louis B. Mayer thought the film would increase Powell's star power.
Paula refers to Brad as "Lochinvar back from the wars". "Lochinvar" is the title of a romantic poem by Sir Walter Scott, first published in 1808.
The third most successful film in 1936 for RKO, after Swing Time (1936) and Follow the Fleet (1936), both starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
