Ananth Mahadevan is off to the Busan International Film Festival with his new film, and he has shared what compelled him to make his latest.
Titled "Bittersweet", Mahadevan's new film has been nominated in the Competition section of the prestigious film fest that will take place between October 21 and October 30 this year.
Mahadevan says the condition of female sugarcane cutters in the Beed district of Maharashtra was an eye-opener, and he felt he had to tell their story.
"It was so disappointing to realize that something like this is going on in India, in Maharashtra. When I started probing the issue and researching, there was not much document or hard material available. It is a volatile subject and is about human survival at a humongous cost, under an excruciating circumstance," Mahadevan told Ians.
Elaborating on the issue, the filmmaker said as sugarcane is a seasonal crop, the cutters had to...

'Saint Joan': Constance Cummings as the George Bernard Shaw heroine. Constance Cummings on stage: From sex-change farce and Emma Bovary to Juliet and 'Saint Joan' (See previous post: “Constance Cummings: Frank Capra, Mae West and Columbia Lawsuit.”) In the mid-1930s, Constance Cummings landed the title roles in two of husband Benn W. Levy's stage adaptations: Levy and Hubert Griffith's Young Madame Conti (1936), starring Cummings as a demimondaine who falls in love with a villainous character. She ends up killing him – or does she? Adapted from Bruno Frank's German-language original, Young Madame Conti was presented on both sides of the Atlantic; on Broadway, it had a brief run in spring 1937 at the Music Box Theatre. Based on the Gustave Flaubert novel, the Theatre Guild-produced Madame Bovary (1937) was staged in late fall at Broadway's Broadhurst Theatre. Referring to the London production of Young Madame Conti, The...

Simon Callow, Mark Elder and Gerard McBurney share a love for the music of Ivor Novello, which will be celebrated in a Prom, Glamorous Night
One day over lunch some 15 or more years ago, the trailblazing conductor of the Hallé Orchestra, Mark Elder, the Shostakovich scholar and avant-garde composer Gerard McBurney and I discovered our shared passion for the music of Ivor Novello. The slow-burning result of that encounter is the late-night Prom on 9 August celebrating the work and remarkable life of our hero. All those years ago we pledged that we Must Do Something About Ivor, but exactly what was unclear. Novello was the most successful British musical theatre composer of the 20th century before the meteoric rise of Andrew Lloyd Webber, and one of the great figures of his time. But it would have been hard at that moment in the 1990s to have chosen a less fashionable...

Irish audiences were introduced to Robert Sheehan in the harrowing Irish feature, 'Song for a Raggy Boy'. Following this a constant flow of acting work started and has rarely let up since. Roles in feature films such as 'Summer of the Flying Saucer', 'Red Riding' and 'Cherrybomb' along with dozens of television series including 'Foreign Exchange', 'The Clinic', 'Bitter Sweet' and E4's ongoing 'Misfits' have kept the Portlaoise export very firmly in the public psyche. Iftn spoke with him about getting in touch with his animal instincts, taking part in a very enjoyable casting session and looking for Ivan McCormick's twitch.

In the history of the MTV Video Music Awards, no artist has taken home more Moonmen than Madonna. The Material Girl, who performed at the very first VMAs in 1984 and most recently introduced the Michael Jackson tribute at last year's show, has taken home a grand total of 20 Video Music Awards across her illustrious career, and on this day in 1998, she scored six prizes in one night, including her only win for Video of the Year (for "Ray of Light," which won five; she got one more for "Frozen").
It was fitting that Madonna had such a huge night at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards. She had been away from pop music for a few years (she had instead been focusing on films, including the title role in the movie musical "Evita"). The last time she made an impact on the music scene was with the strange, esoteric Bedtime Stories album,...

Rocker John Mayer thrilled fans at a sold-out concert on Sunday, August 22 after inviting jazz star Brad Mehldau onstage for a duet set. The singer took to his Twitter.com page last week and hinted that his concert at Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl would be extra special, teasing, "Planning something so beautiful for the Hollywood Bowl show... Stay tuned..."
And Mayer kept his promise - he and pianist Mehldau wowed the crowd with a collaborative set as the sun went down over the outdoor venue. The duo covered Jimi Hendrix's "The Wind Cries Mary", "Can't Find My Way Home" by Blind Faith, and Led Zeppelin's "Going to California", before transitioning into Mayer's own "Stop This Train".
They ended the set with a jazz rendition of The Verve's 1997 hit "Bitter Sweet Symphony".

Noel Coward with Elizabeth Taylor on the set of Boom! (top); with Marlene Dietrich, 1937 (bottom) Noel Coward — playwright, composer, director, actor, (purported) spy, nationalist, propagandist, semi-closeted gay guy — is the subject of an exhibition currently being held at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, “Star Quality: The World of Noel Coward,” which runs until Sunday, April 18, in the Academy’s Fourth Floor Gallery in Beverly Hills. Admission is free. The son of a piano salesman, Coward became the embodiment of the affected, stiff-upper-lip, upper-class Englishman. Among his stage classics are Hay Fever, Private Lives, Cavalcade, Design for Living, Blithe Spirit, and the operetta Bitter Sweet. His compositions [...]...

'Celebrating cinema's emerging talents' - That's our new slogan, and I think tMF has come a long way, but of course there is still room for improvement. I think we're lucky that our viewers care enough to tell us both our good and bad points. The October edition of the Top 50 Hitlist will reflect all these... In the meantime, tMF puts the spotlight on today's rising stars - these are the guys who really made a lot of buzz - grabbed plum roles despite intense competition and would be working with the industry's topnotch filmmakers, and more.
Find out who they are - you've certainly heard some of them and a few might be unfamiliar names, but take a closer look - you might be missing some names who are still 'under the radar' but would soon be rockin' the scene!
