Quotes

  • Amos Hart : [to the cameraman]  Now, listen. I don't want any of this to get in the newspapers. I want the whole thing kept perfectly quiet.

Babe : [Ignores him and takes his arm]  Sure, sure. You're too smart a guy. Step right over here.

Amos Hart : Oh, no. You ain't gonna drag me into this.

Babe : You're already drugged, ya dope, so stop stallin' and get over there. We gotta catch the mail edition.

    Amos Hart : I won't do it.

Babe : There you are. No spirit or cooperation.

Jake Callahan : Now, listen, Amos. You want people to think you're a yellow dog who ran out on his wife?

Babe : A low, dirty bum?

Roxie Hart : What else is he?

  • Roxie Hart : [after they kiss]  Listen, sweetie pie. I'll tell you a secret. Any old time the going gets too tough, all I have to do is just say one word and I'm out. Just one word, that's all. So you needn't worry.

Homer Howard : I'm so happy. Is there anything I can do for you?

Roxie Hart : Yeah, go find Benham, that agent guy, and tell 'em I want some action.

    Homer Howard : Right away.

Roxie Hart : A proposition like this, you got to keep it boiling, something new all the time. When ya got your whole future tied up in it, you gotta grab it by the horn and hit it while it's hot.

  • Billy Flynn : [Readying Roxie to meet the press]  Holy, Moses! Haven't you got something else you can wear?

Roxie Hart : And what's wrong with this?

Billy Flynn : Well, for a clip joint, it's great. But you gotta remember what I said, you dope. Regret, remorse, unhappiness. No matter what happens. There can never be any more life, gaiety, happiness for you. You'll never smile again, understand?

Roxie Hart : [Smiles, then frowns]  I got it.

Billy Flynn : Well, don't forget it! Birdbrain.

  • Homer Howard : [Dancing with Roxie]  Mrs. Hart, I think you're just wonderful.

Roxie Hart : [Hard to hear him]  What?

Homer Howard : I know you didn't do it. I just know it.

Roxie Hart : Why, you're a sweetie pie to say that... but if you print it, I'll wrap a chair around your neck.

  • Billy Flynn : Now let's get this straight, tootsie. I haven't committed myself on this proposition yet. Maybe I'll be able to handle it, maybe not. It all depends on development. But I'm gonna give you two tips now just in case.

Roxie Hart : Well, uh, maybe I shouldn't say this, but... I didn't do it.

Billy Flynn : You didn't do it? Oh, well then, I'm not sure I'm the man for the job. Now if you're guilty...

Roxie Hart : Oh, please, please. I'm sorry I mentioned it.

Billy Flynn : Oh, that's alright. I'll keep it in mind in case of emergencies.

  • Roxie Hart : Listen, Mr. Flynn, a photo finish may be good enough for you, but for me anything less than eight lengths is too close. That's a hanging district attorney out there!

Billy Flynn : I tell you there is no occasion whatever for alarm. All we need is one juror and already I got that one number one guy... that big Irish foreman right there. Why, the worst we can get is a hung jury.

Roxie Hart : Or a hung Roxie.

  • Velma Wall : Do you seriously think Billy Flynn is going to waste his time on every two-bit scuffle that gets into the papers?

Roxie Hart : Two-bit scuffle? 8 pictures and 9 columns in 2 days. I guess that ain't that the bee's knees.

Velma Wall : My dear, dear. Do you realize that during my first week here I have a total of 15 pictures, 27 1/2 columns, and an editorial denouncing me?

Roxie Hart : Please, you're so awful it's all I can do to keep my mind on you.

    Mrs. Morton : Children!

Velma Wall : To hear you talk you'd think you are the queen of the jail. Well, permit me to remind you, Miss Sloppy, your whole case is a very low-class affair, whereas mine, friend, was in the social register.

Roxie Hart : On a pass?

Velma Wall : In my opinion, Mrs. Hart, you're a very ordinary bum and you might as well face it.

Roxie Hart : Bum? I'll bum you.

[They engage in a huge catfight]

Mrs. Morton : Children, you girls have got to stop this squabbling.

[She stops the slugfest, grabs both Roxie and Velma, knocks their heads together and they both collapse out cold, then Mama Morton back to her newspaper]

Mrs. Morton : Let's see, where was I?

  • Billy Flynn : [During Roxie's prison interview]  Don't you worry, my dear. The American public will fight to the death for you and your wee one.

Roxie Hart : But what will beat the rap? That's the rented test.

Mary Sunshine : Every true woman will be with you spiritually, Mrs. Hart. Motherhood itself will be at stake.

Roxie Hart : You've been so kind, Miss Sunshine. If it's a girl, I'd like to name it after you.

Mary Sunshine : Oh, you darling! Oo, that's just too sweet.

Roxie Hart : And if it's a boy, after you, Jake.

Jake Callahan : [laughs nervously]  Oh, no, not me, honey. Thanks just the same. You slip it to Billy here.

Billy Flynn : Well, I... I appreciate the honor naturally. But I happen to be married and happily and would like to remain so.
