Quotes

  • Jake Callahan : Honey, I keep tellin' ya, this county wouldn't hang Lucrezia Borgia.

  • Jake Callahan : The streets of this city are congested with women that Billy has saved from their just desserts.

  • Jake Callahan : Listen, Roxie, you are a very lucky girl. Today you are nobody and who cares. Tomorrow money couldn't buy the publicity you'll have. Column after column of it. Pictures, measurements, what'cha eat, what'cha drink, how ya feel when you get up in the morning, advice to young girls...

    E. Clay Benham : On the radio...

Jake Callahan : Everybody in the country will know ya. They'll fight to see ya like when you cross the sidewalk from the patrol wagon to the courtroom door. They'll want your autograph. They'll grab your clothes for souvenirs. They'll want to kiss ya so they can tell their grandchildren.

    E. Clay Benham : A million dollar production and you're the star!

Jake Callahan : I'm tellin' ya, honey, you'll be right up there with Peaches Browning, William Jennings Bryan, Queen Marie, Ma Ferguson...

    E. Clay Benham : Mutt and Jeff...

Jake Callahan : Red Grange, Duke Snyder, Aimee Semple McPherson, Barney Google... Don't you understand, dear? This is Chicago, the city of opportunity...

    E. Clay Benham : And that city only awaits one word from you... to be at your feet.

[Benham picks up Roxie's foot and kisses it]

  • Amos Hart : [to the cameraman]  Now, listen. I don't want any of this to get in the newspapers. I want the whole thing kept perfectly quiet.

Babe : [Ignores him and takes his arm]  Sure, sure. You're too smart a guy. Step right over here.

Amos Hart : Oh, no. You ain't gonna drag me into this.

Babe : You're already drugged, ya dope, so stop stallin' and get over there. We gotta catch the mail edition.

    Amos Hart : I won't do it.

Babe : There you are. No spirit or cooperation.

Jake Callahan : Now, listen, Amos. You want people to think you're a yellow dog who ran out on his wife?

Babe : A low, dirty bum?

Roxie Hart : What else is he?

  • Jake Callahan : [Locking Roxie in a closet and she's now kicks a hole through the door with her leg]  Take it easy, honey. You don't want to damage your defense.

  • Homer Howard : Mr. Callahan? I've just seen Finnegan, the janitor.

    Jake Callahan : What janitor?

Homer Howard : At the apartment house. And from what he says, she didn't do it!

Jake Callahan : Ssh! Are you cra... ? Are you nuts? What are you trying to do, kill a story? Listen, you're supposed to be a newspaperman and not a detective. You understand? You're supposed to build up a story, not tear it down.

    [He grabs Homer's notes]

Jake Callahan : Give me that. Never scare me like that again!

  • Billy Flynn : [During Roxie's prison interview]  Don't you worry, my dear. The American public will fight to the death for you and your wee one.

Roxie Hart : But what will beat the rap? That's the rented test.

Mary Sunshine : Every true woman will be with you spiritually, Mrs. Hart. Motherhood itself will be at stake.

Roxie Hart : You've been so kind, Miss Sunshine. If it's a girl, I'd like to name it after you.

Mary Sunshine : Oh, you darling! Oo, that's just too sweet.

Roxie Hart : And if it's a boy, after you, Jake.

Jake Callahan : [laughs nervously]  Oh, no, not me, honey. Thanks just the same. You slip it to Billy here.

Billy Flynn : Well, I... I appreciate the honor naturally. But I happen to be married and happily and would like to remain so.
