- The secretary of a newly appointed government official strives to make him a success in spite of his shortcomings.
- Washington DC during World War II. The machinery of government is a hive of endless, if not seamless, activity. Armament production is the name of the game, by fair means or foul. Ed Browne, more used to making cars in Detroit, is having to try and get planes made in this maelstrom. Luckily or unluckily, he finds he has a secretary who knows the political ropes - and her own mind.—Jeremy Perkins {J-26}
- It's the height of the war in Washington DC where there is a shortage of both accommodations and eligible men. The latter issue doesn't seem to be a problem for Elizabeth Allard - Smokey to her friends - with newspaper reporter Branch Owens, covering the political beat, in love with her despite she only considering him a friend, while she in turn is in love with lawyer Dana McGuire, who not only has political aspirations but is aiming for the White House. Smokey is known in inside circles as one of the most effective of secretaries in the War Construction Board in knowing the ins and outs of navigating bureaucracy. Over the course of less than a day, she has a series of antagonistic encounters with the same man, arguably the most egregious in her mind being he given the hotel suite that she had reserved for her friends May Harness and Army Sgt. Joe Blake's wedding ceremony and wedding night, leaving them to scramble for what to do especially for their wedding night as there are no vacancies at all in the city. It isn't until she arrives at work the next morning that Smokey learns the man is Ed Browne, her new boss. Just arrived from Detroit, Ed was an automobile production executive hired to oversee the production of bombers for the US military. His hiring is despite his less than conventional methods, which may cause problems in bureaucratic DC. In their working relationship, Smokey and Ed meet in the middle in she helping him with what could be considered the diplomatic channels of government, while he shows her that things don't necessarily have to be done the traditional DC way, especially to get things done despite stepping on some toes along the way in he seemingly not playing by the rules. Their personal and professional lives start to intertwine when Dana's political aspirations affect Smokey and Ed's lives in their entirety.—Huggo
