- Alexander Hollenius: [to Christine] Good evening, my dear. Why, you look positively majestic. I think I'd better remain seated.
- Alexander Hollenius: [snatches his bleeding hand away from Christine] Like all women - white as a sheet at the sight of a couple of scratches... calm and smiling like a hospital nurse in the presence of a mortal wound... Good night!
- Alexander Hollenius: She tells me you're some sort of a genius, if such a term can be applied to a mere performer.
- Christine Radcliffe: Oh, you swine!
- Alexander Hollenius: That is a very coarse expression, coming from so smartly dressed a young woman. I am referring to that handsome coat.
- Christine Radcliffe: [she throws her fur coat at him] Take it back!
- Alexander Hollenius: I seem to remember the dress, too!
- Alexander Hollenius: [she glares; he holds up one hand, smirking] Restrain yourself, my dear. Jimmy might come in.
- Christine Radcliffe: Oh, Alex - if I could only believe you.
- Alexander Hollenius: That is a luxury beyond your present means, my dear. If you want to believe other people, you better give up lying yourself.
- Alexander Hollenius: Extraordinary how people try to keep their little secrets... which can never be kept. Oh, but of course, you think they can, don't you? Well, you'll find out.
- Alexander Hollenius: I gave you a great deal.
- Christine Radcliffe: I know.
- Alexander Hollenius: I wonder if you do. I'm not exactly a simple personality. They call me a great man... That's the loneliest animal in the world.
- [last lines]
- Concertgoer: Oh, Christine - you must be the happiest woman in the world!
- Alexander Hollenius: Compose a piece yourself, my dear, and see how it sounds to you after listening to Beethoven.
- [first lines]
- Man Backstage: [Christine enters the concert hall, going upstairs to watch the end of the performance from the rear of the balcony; Karel finishes the performance to loud applause and goes backstage] Congratulations, Mr. Novak.
- Karel Novak: Oh - thank you very much.
- Girl at Concert: Oh, Mr. Novak - would you autograph my program, please?
- Karel Novak: Surely, yes.
- Boy at Concert: Are there any recordings of your playing, Mr. Novak?
- Karel Novak: Well, I made some in Europe years ago, but I'm afraid they weren't sold over here.
