- TriviaFilmed April 1-late April 1947, the last of RKO's four classic Dick Tracy features released from 1945 to 1947, and the only one in which Ralph Byrd takes second billing. He previously starred in the four Dick Tracy serials from Republic Pictures released from 1937 to 1941 and the one feature before this. He would continue playing the character on television, until his untimely death in 1952.
- GoofsToo much stock footage involving automobiles results in more than the usual mix-up of year models and lack of consistency in body styles.

Very good effort all around.
This is a surprisingly good effort in an otherwise routine series of second-billed features. The other entries in the Dick Tracy series are cartoonish and juvenile, but this one has a plot, good production values and better than competent acting. Hiring Boris Karloff was inspired casting as he adds immeasurable status to the film with his vivid portrayal of Gruesome.
The most striking aspect of the production was the unusually absorbing screenplay of the type not often seen in a programmer - just swallow a bit and go with it, and it works. Last but not least, you can get a look at one of Hollywood's best looking females in Anne Gwynne. Not for nothing was she a WWII pin-up girl.
If you come across this picture in your DVD set, don't skip it. It's worth watching.
