As a growing clutch of earlier events postpone to later in the year, major French TV festival Canneseries is holding firm, returning to its traditional mid-April dates — in this case April 9-14 — for its fourth edition in 2021, which will be a hybrid affair.
The third Cannes Intl. Series Festival ran Oct. 9-14 onsite in Cannes, attracting an unexpected influx of French industry executives accompanying titles at the festival who were delighted to be attending an on-site event again.
It also launched an online version for executives unable to attend in person, screening all competition contenders via Festival Scope to industry execs, the press and a limited public audience of 2,000 viewers in and sometimes outside France.
In a classic example of a festival carrying over online elements into 2021, Canneseries is planning a second hybrid event with on-site screenings at Cannes’ Palais des Festivals for the TV festival’s Official Selection line-up,...

With cameras rolling again and commissioners hungry for fresh content, some of France’s biggest TV companies such as Newen, Mediawan and Federation Entertainment have so far been spared from major setbacks caused by the pandemic. Down the line, however, French players headed to Mipcom might have to rely more on streamers and international sources of financing as French broadcasters, which play a major role in funding content, could reduce their investment in 2021 as they cope with the continued drop in advertising revenues during the health crisis.
For now, at least, the massive restart of TV production in France has given industry executives some confidence in their business prospects.
When the lockdown ended in May, the French government set up a temporary indemnity fund of €50 million ($58 million) for canceled or postponed TV and film shoots during the pandemic; the fund was then doubled to €100 million ($117 million) by a pool of...

Thriller series “Red Light” world premieres Sunday as part of the competition section of Canneseries. Variety spoke to its stars and co-creators Halina Reijn and Carice van Houten, and writer Esther Gerritsen.
In the show, Van Houten, who played Melisandre in “Game of Thrones,” plays Sylvia, a brothel madam in Antwerp’s red light district. Reijn is opera singer Esther, and Maaike Neuville plays Evi, a woman struggling to be both a good mother and a detective solving brutal crimes.
The three women get caught up in the world of human trafficking and prostitution when Esther’s husband – a philosophy professor – disappears. From completely different backgrounds the lives of these women intertwine and they find out they need each other to get out of the difficult situations they’re trapped in.
The show is written by Gerritsen, alongside Christophe Dirickx, Frank Ketelaar and Reijn. The directors are Wouter Bouvijn and Anke Blondé.

TLC is undoubtedly one of the most legendary groups to come out of the 1990’s. With hits like No Scrubs, Red Light Special, and 1994’s mega smash Waterfalls their place in music history is solidified. Unfortunately due to contract disputes, fighting amongst themselves, and the untimely death of one of their members of the trio we never got to see this RnB group reach their full potential. There’s a lot that people don’t know about this group, and I think it’s time that they receive a biopic. I know, I know… VH1 did a TLC movie but let’s be honest

Criminal Minds has always had a way of incorporating fear, shock and feel-good moments into an hour-long episode. The season finale "Red Light" officially ended Reid's prison drama. He faced off with Cat Adams and dealt with her on a psychological level. He not only helped the team figure out where his mother was being held, but he also faced some of his own emotional struggles.

On the Criminal Minds Season 12 finale, Reid went toe-to-toe (and at one point danced cheek-to-cheek!) with the person who had framed him for murder. In the end, was he able to divine the “secret” he was keeping from himself, and in doing so save his abducted mother’s life?

Yes, Cat Adams is a psychopath and has put Reid through hell, but Matthew Gray Gubler and Aubrey Plaza play off one another so well it's impossible not to hope to see her in the future, and as great as they were in "Entropy," that has nothing on how spectacular they are in this Criminal Minds episode.

The nominations for the 2017 Academy Awards were announced bright and early this morning and, while there were plenty snubs, we want to talk about one surprise: the inclusion of Fire at Sea in the best documentary feature category. The surprise here isn’t that the film was actually nominated but that, as a foreign film, it joins a rather small group of films that have done exactly that. So, what is the track record of foreign films in the best documentary feature category?
When the nominations were read, Fire at Sea (written and directed by Gianfranco Rosi) found itself competing alongside I Am Not Your Negro (directed by Raoul Peck and co-written by Peck and James Baldwin); Live, Animated (directed by Roger Ross Williams and written by Ron Suskind); O.J.: Made in America (directed by Ezra Edelman), and 13th (directed...

After long years of a plethora of failed and mediocre projects, it seems like we are finally experiencing an era where the anime and manga adaptations are actually becoming great films. “Parasyte“, “Assassination Classroom”, “Rurouni Kenshin Trilogy” are just a few of the examples of the particular tendency, and if not for the awful “Attack on Titan” adaptation we would be talking about an absolute phenomenon.
One of the reasons for the phenomenon is Takashi Miike, who has taken on a series of the nonsensical and violent ones (“The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji“, “Ace Attorney”), producing films in a fashion that only he could. “As The Gods Will” is a distinct example of the fact.

Who needs a stunt man anyway? In the 19 years since Tom Cruise debuted as Ethan Hunt in the first Mission: Impossible, he's made a name for himself as one of Hollywood's biggest in-real-life daredevils.

Eddie Murphy became a comedy legend during his early Eighties run on Saturday Night Live. But he hasn't graced the show's iconic stage since hosting an episode on December 15th, 1984 – months after leaving the series during Season Nine – with bad blood souring the relationship over the years. Now Murphy is making his long-awaited return for the series' three-hour 40th anniversary special, scheduled for February 15th. "It's just timing," the comedian-musician told News One in a recent interview. "It just never worked out where the timing was right for me to do it.

Long known for his comedy, Eddie Murphy may soon add music to his act. Murphy, 53, released Red Light with Snoop Lion back in 2013, and now he's back with "Oh Jah Jah," available on iTunes Jan. 27. The new reggae song references current events and societal issues, with lines like: "Police in the street shooting down black babies / Glory hallelujah for the young and the innocent." While it's been 20 years since Murphy's hit "Party All the Time" off his debut musical album, How Could It Be, the actor tells Rolling Stone he never stopped making music. And despite his two most recent releases having a reggae vibe,...

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson isn’t building bridges between science and religion during the holiday season.
The famed scientist is under fire for making statements his critics said belittled Christmas and shows a lack of respect for Christians, which included a tweet that recognized the birthday of revolutionary physicist and mathematician, Isaac Newton, on Christmas day.

This year’s Oscar race could make history with two possible best picture nominees directed by women — Ava DuVernay’s Selma and Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken. If both women are nominated for best director, that would also be a historical moment. But though these accomplishments in the narrative field are possible, more women directors are breaking into the documentary categories. Four of the 15 shortlisted documentaries feature women at the helm: Jennifer Grausman (co-directed with Sam Cullman and Mark Becker) with Art and Craft, Tia Lessin (co-directed with Carl Deal) with Citizen Koch, Laura Poitras with Citizenfour and Rory Kennedy with Last Days in Vietnam. Additionally, three of the eight shortlisted documentary shorts feature female directors: Ellen Goosenberg Kent with Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1, Aneta Kopacz with Joanna and Lucy Walker with The Lion’s Mouth Opens. More often than not, women directors tend to...

The War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, The Invisible Man—these are just a few of the enduring stories brought to life by legendary sci-fi writer H.G. Wells. Perhaps one of his most haunting tales, The Island of Doctor Moreau was recently reimagined with a World War II setting in the digital comic, The Army of Dr. Moreau, and Idw Publishing has announced they will release the 7-issue story in print.
The Army of Dr. Moreau will hit comic book store shelves in March from Idw Publishing. We have the official press release with full details and an early look at the cover art:

Tim McGraw left Red Light Management last week after five years with the firm, sources tell Billboard. During an interim period, McGraw is working with his former manager, Scott Siman. McGraw has had a fruitful five years at Red Light, where he was managed by founder Coran Capshaw, with successful headline touring, radio hits, a residency at the Venetian in Las Vegas with his wife Faith Hill, several branding deals, the difficult extrication from his recording contract with Curb Records and a new deal at Big Machine. In addition to the management change — the fourth in McGraw's career —

Last week was a low blow for our heroes. Captain Irving is still struggling to maintain his sanity without his soul and the gang accidentally acquired a super rare poison for Henry aka the Horseman of War. He used that nefarious, suspiciously blood-like mixture to create a Freakin’ Spider that crawled into Katrina’s mouth. No. God, no. Please…no. Ugh. With Moloch’s minions having the upper hand, will the Scooby gang rack up a win this week in “Deliverance?” ******* We open on Ichabod and Katrina in bed, bathed in blue light and gossamer sheets. So this is either a memory or a dream. The couple share some platitudes about the grueling schedule of the Revolutionary War interfering with them getting it on like rabbits. Ichabod shares his hopes for their future children, which is sweet. He then flips Katrina over and chokes her out while spitting spiders into her mouth,...

Country, heartland, reefer anthems and music that 'sounds like you'd play it at a strip club' – there's nothing Eddie can't do
With no more Shrek sequels to spin out, it was perhaps inevitable that Eddie Murphy would return to music. Some people might consider this a cynical move, what with Eddie's film career not going so well of late. (His last film, 2012's A Thousand Words, was dubbed as possibly "the worst-reviewed film of all time".) But a quick glance through the madness of Murphy's back catalogue suggests we should celebrate instead – with Eddie you never know what might happen next.
Eddie certainly doesn't seem intent on returning to the trademark 80s pop-disco sound that gave us the Rick James-produced 1985 classic Party All the Time. When making a comeback, it's important to make a statement and Eddie has done just that by stealing his mate Snoop Lion's idea: he's gone reggae.

Choosing a Daw is like choosing a new car for you, and each of us has our own personal taste to satisfy. I know how hard it is to start learning things from scratch, and that’s the reason why many composers out there are reluctant to take a new step forward. First time I met Studio One was at a friend’s studio, and, of course, I was rather unwilling, maybe even scared, to work on it.
I have to admit that I was soooooo wrong at first! First look at Studio One’s interface got me hooked immediately. Sure, maybe it looks a bit sterile because it’s all gray-ish, but I like simplicity. I don’t like millions of colors jumping all over the screen, it just gets me distracted. The second thing that I like about it is that every project that I bounce sounds exactly...
