- This Warner Bros. short reviews in an often humorous way the impact of the automobile on the United States. By 1900, the horseless carriage was beginning to have an impact. Early adopters were often the object of attention by large curious crowds. There were many car manufacturers and the quality of their product varied considerably. Traffic jams, pollution and automobile racing were only a few of the outcomes.—garykmcd
- The story of the automobile in the United States from the late 1890s to the mid-20th century is presented. "The horseless carriage", as it was first called, did not have an easy transition into the ubiquitous gadget it is today, largely due to the lack of infrastructure, such as paved highways; it is seen as a novelty to most. The automobile in the early days was seen as inferior to horse-powered carriages, as automobiles were not initially built for speed. Within thirty years, however, the horse-powered carriage had virtually disappeared, overtaken by their gas-powered competitors. Automobiles not only came into vogue as a means of transportation, but they also were used in other areas where horses traditionally reigned supreme, such as in track races (the most famous being the Indianapolis 500) and road races. The normalcy of the automobile, especially in urban life, led to other unforeseen consequences, such as traffic jams. The device also led to the creation of novelty models which were not of much use beyond as curiosity factors.—Huggo
