Lindsay Mendez Joins Josh Andrés Rivera & Patrick Schwarzenegger In ‘American Sports Story’ Season 1
All Rise alumna Lindsay Mendez is set as a series regular alongside Josh Andrés Rivera and Patrick Schwarzenegger in Ryan Murphy’s FX anthology American Sports Story, Deadline has learned.
Like with the other leads, her casting was done in early 2023, before the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, we hear.
American Sports Story, a new extension of Murphy’s “American Story” franchise, is a scripted anthological limited series focusing on a prominent event involving a sports figure and re-examines it through the prism of today’s world, telling that story from multiple perspectives.
The first installment, written by Stu Zicherman, is based on the podcast Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc from the Boston Globe and Wondery. It charts the rise and fall of NFL superstar Aaron Hernandez, played by Rivera, and explores the connections of the disparate strands of his identity, his family, his career, his suicide, and their legacy in sports and American culture.

What a difference 40 years makes. After opening to pans and a run of only 16 official performances in 1981, Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s musical “Merrily We Roll Along” has been remounted on Broadway for the very first time. Maria Friedman has stepped into the director role once occupied by Sondheim’s frequent collaborator Hal Prince — “Merrily” was their first flop after an impressive string of successful shows in the 70s. The revival opened on Oct. 10 at the Hudson Theatre for a run slated to end in March.
“Merrily” boasts marquee names Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, and Daniel Radcliffe. The trio play Franklin Shepard, Mary Flynn, and Charley Kringas, respectively, the three creatives at the heart of the musical that’s told in reverse over the course of 20+ years. It begins in a moment of personal and professional disillusionment and estrangement and unspools to a simpler, earlier time when their friendships...

Concord is reaching into its huge library of music recordings for a first-of-its-kind initiative with Outfest to support up-and-coming Lgbtqia+ filmmakers of color.
Over the weekend, the festival premiered three short films selected for the initiative — each of them making creative use of a song from the Concord IP holdings, which include more than a million recordings and music compositions.
Skate, a short written and directed by Zoë Hodge that’s set in a roller skating rink, incorporated Sylvester’s disco anthem “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real).” Avivar, a drama that revolves around the patriarch of a Latino family and his queer son, drew inspiration from “Tres Días de Carnaval” by Latin music icons Celia Cruz and Johnny Pacheco. Revivals have been a mainstay of Broadway for decades. But it wasn’t until the 31st ceremony in 1977 that the Tony Awards added a new category honoring these productions. The nominees for the inaugural prize were “Guys and Dolls,” “The Cherry Orchard” and “The Three Penny Opera” with “Porgy and Bess” taking the honors. Other winners over the years included “The Pirates of Penzance,” “Anything Goes,” “Death of a Salesman,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Gypsy.”
In 1994, the category was divided into best revival of a musical with Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Carousel” winning the award and “An Inspector Calls” taking home the best revival of a play honor.
This year’s nominees in both categories celebrate the work of Stephen Sondheim, Henrik Ibsen and three landmark black playwrights: August Wilson, Suzan-Lori Parks and Lorraine Hansberry. Here’s a closer look at this year’s contenders.

“It grabbed my heart and just shook it,” reveals Audra McDonald of Adrienne Kennedy’s searing play “Ohio State Murders.” The six-time Tony Award winner initially participated in a reading of the script over Zoom, one of many plays producer Jeffrey Richards organized during the pandemic to keep folks engaged while theater was shuttered. “When we finished, I couldn’t breathe. I was so stunned, and my soul was so shaken by what I had just read that I couldn’t let it go,” admits McDonald. The actress immediately agreed to star in the searing drama, eventually earning her 10th career Tony nomination. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Even though it just recently debuted on Broadway, “Ohio State Murders” was first performed over 30 years ago. Its central figure, Suzanne, never leaves the stage and endures a horrific, unceasing wave of racism, misogyny, and violence. “I know that if I...

Well, that was something. The 2023 ACM Awards ended on a Texas-sized downer, with Dolly Parton giving the premiere of the new song “World on Fire” from her upcoming rock project and showering the audience not only with confetti, but with a sense of impending doom while dancers twirled around her.
“What we gonna do when it all burns down?” she sang, backed by a stomp-clap rhythm straight out of late-Nineties Shania Twain. It sounded sort of urgent at first, but then she also sang vague things like “When did we lose in God we trust,...

Andrea Bocelli gave the newly crowned King Charles III exactly what he wanted with a stunning performance of a special song at the grand coronation ceremony on Sunday.
Ahead of the performance at Windsor Castle, Bocelli spoke with Et’s Kevin Frazier about the event and the song he performed with fellow opera legend Sir Bryn Terfel.
“The king asked for the song, ‘You Will Never Walk Alone,'” Bocelli explained. “I think he likes this song also for the meaning… ‘You Will Never Walk Alone’ means you will never be alone. It’s an encouragement, for himself.”
The song itself famously comes from the iconic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel, from 1945, and has been covered to great fanfare by many renowned artists who, like Bocelli, reimagined it in a different style.

Aaron Tveit has been a fixture on New York stages, appearing in shows including “Wicked,” “Next to Normal” and “Catch Me if You Can,” and he recently wrapped a second run as Christian in “Moulin Rouge!,” which bowed before the pandemic arrived and returned after Broadway reopened. But it’s television that has been helping him most rapidly expand his repertoire.
Tveit takes on a cavalcade of roles in Apple TV+’s “Schmigadoon!,” a parodical love letter to musicals, created by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio and starring Keegan Michael-Key and Cecily Strong as a couple working out the kinks in their relationship in a magical land populated by characters from the stage. The series, which focused on musicals of the ’40s and ’50s in its first season, sends up shows of
the ’60s and ’70s in its second, set in the magical land of “Schmicago.”

ABC's Beauty and the Beast Special Casts Josh Groban as the Beast, Plus Rita Moreno and Joshua Henry
The hairy half of ABC’s Beauty and the Beast special will have a beautiful singing voice, at least: Josh Groban will play the Beast in the upcoming 30th anniversary celebration, the network announced on Friday.
The chart-topping singer — who also recorded a song for the 2017 Beauty and the Beast live-action film starring Emma Watson — joins H.E.R., who was announced as playing the role of Belle back in July. Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration is billed as a “reimagining” of the classic 1991 animated film, with a blend of animation and live-action performances to be taped in front of a live audience.

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
If you haven’t taken a look at Diane Keaton’s Instagram feed, you really should. The 76-year-old Oscar winner entertains her 2.1 million followers with a range of video posts. Some of my favorites include a photomontage of famous men — Justin Bieber, Lil Baby, Oscar Isaac and Kodi Smit-McPhee, to name a few — set to “It’s Raining Men,” and another explaining why she prefers almonds to walnuts while she shows off her snack closet. In April, Keaton’s “Spring Cleaning” video featured her in one of her signature black-and-white ensembles, a hat and studded black leather gloves as she picked through a closet for items to donate to Goodwill.
“There’s something wrong about that, but really I’m glad that I’m part of it,” Keaton says of her Instagram popularity. “I do like it. And I could play around with things.

For the last two decades, Cinco Paul (along with writing partner Ken Daurio) was best known for writing big-deal family movies your kids were begging you to take them to. But all the while he had a musical percolating in his head, partially based upon a what-if set-up involving the backpackers of “An American Werewolf in London” entering a musical-scape instead of a horror-scape. And thus, 2021’s hit AppleTV+ series “Schmigadoon!” — starring Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key in a far less furry, significantly more comic version of the “London” scenario — was born.
Also starring a veritable who’s who of Broadway talent and borrowing liberally from the Great American Musical heyday of shows like “The Music Man,” “Carousel” and “The Sound of Music” among a great many others, “Schmigadoon!” proved popular enough for fans to demand a second season, which just wrapped and will be entitled “Schmicago!” Showrunner Cinco Paul...

For the seventh time in his long career, Nathan Lane will be trying to win his first ever Primetime Emmy Award. Lane is nominated in the Best Comedy Guest Actor category for his stint as Teddy Dimas on the first season of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.”
Lane’s submission is “The Boy from 6B,” in which Lane, like most of the other characters in the episode, has no audible dialogue and primarily sees Lane communicating using American Sign Language. The episode opens in a flashback of Teddy telling his 10-year-old deaf son, Theo, that he wishes he could hear the soundtrack to the musical, “Carousel.” He tries to see if Theo can hear it through headphones with the volume turned up and presses the headphones against his head until he pulls back and apologizes.

“We had the chance to make something truly joyous,” explains Tony nominee Warren Carlyle of “The Music Man.” With Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster as the stars in this revival, the stage was set for the choreographer to craft a show where “you can leave all your troubles outside the doors.” He credits much of that joy to a new approach, one focused on character. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“I have two stars who can really dance,” notes Carlyle, referencing Jackman and Foster. “So there was an opportunity there to make the show dance in perhaps a way it hasn’t done before.” Golden Age musicals of the 30s and 40s are this choreographer’s bread and butter, as seen in his efforts with previous revivals of “Finian’s Rainbow,” “Kiss Me, Kate” and “Hello Dolly!” But these classics often contain giant ensembles, so the large group numbers often become the focus for him.

In July 2021, Apple TV+ unveiled the first episode of their ambitious musical series, “Schmigadoon!” Focused on a couple (played by Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key) trapped in a magical land of musical tropes, the comedy wasn’t just a send-up of Old Hollywood stage shows, but a charming new addition of its own.
The series’ cast and crew felt “Schmigadoon” came to signify far more than they anticipated. “There’s an idea that musicals are fluffy and, in a lot of ways, this show was intentionally fluffy,” said series creator Cinco Paul to IndieWire. The cast is comprised of many Broadway actors, and “Schmigadoon!” — given its 2020 production — provided them an opportunity to perform and sing live when there was no live theater happening. “The crew was sitting there watching us do these numbers, singing live on set, and they said, ‘We might be the only people in the world right...

Chicago – The tradition of the music salon goes as far back as 16th Century Italy, and is designed as a destination “either to please or to educate.” On May 7th, 2022, Soprano Kirsten Leslie Karadzhova and pianist Paul Dykstra will present the first Art Song Series at Dykstra’s “Salon des Artiste” music studio in the Fine Arts Building on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. For complete details regarding this “free to the public” event, see below.
The duo will perform the song cycle “Clairières dans le ciel,” Lili Boulanger composer. Boulanger (1893-1918) was a child music prodigy who had a tragically short life, passing away at age 24, but in her time won the Prix de Rome composition prize, the first female to do so. Her father Ernest Boulanger also won that prize.

Miranda Lambert’s 2021 collaborative album The Marfa Tapes, with Jack Ingram and Jon Randall, was a stripped-down set that helped resituate the Texas-born Lambert in the tradition of Lone Star singer-songwriters like Guy Clark and Robert Earl Keen. It also further cemented the country star’s reputation for stylistic risks — following 2019’s more conventionally fantastic Wildcard, and released in the same year she dropped a tropical house remix of “Tequila Does.”

As of now, there is a lot of uncertainty around Covid when it comes to Broadway. Within the past couple of months, several shows had to suspend performances due to positive cases in their casts, some others had to close permanently, and a couple more are taking hiatuses. The American Theatre Wing also hasn’t announced key dates for this year’s Tony Awards yet.
With that being said, we are now about halfway through the Broadway season, and there are currently 11 productions of plays set to open this spring. Could we be seeing any of them contend at this year’s Tonys? Below is an overview of each play as well as the awards histories of their authors, cast, and directors, plus the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.

‘The Gilded Age’: Julian Fellowes’ new period drama is exceedingly rich in Tony Award-winning actors
Few television series boast an ensemble as rich as HBO’s “The Gilded Age,” at least in terms of Tony Awards. Julian Fellowes’ new period drama, which takes place in 1882 New York during a period of American industrialization and affluence, was shot predominantly in New York City. It draws on the wealth of theatre performers available due to the pandemic. The result is a cast of Broadway luminaries whose accolades total in the dozens, or 64 nominations and 23 wins, to be exact.
At the center of the action are a pair of two-time Tony winners — Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon — who play sisters Agnes van Rhijn and Ada Brook. These doyennes of old, moneyed New York try to bar the door to the new wealth elbowing their way into high society. Baranski won her first Tony for her performance in Tom Stoppard’s “The Real Thing,” which featured Nixon as Baranski’s daughter.

Several TV series have featured special musical episodes during their runs, but “Schmigadoon!” from Apple TV+ is a rarity: an entire series dedicated to musical storytelling. Over the course of its six episodes, the show parodies golden age tuners like “The Music Man,” “Carousel,” and “Finian’s Rainbow” to great effect. The large cast, consisting of TV and stage favorites, gets a perfect showcase for their triple threat talents. “Schmigadoon!” currently sits in 18th place in Gold Derby’s combined odds for SAG Comedy Ensemble. However, considering the amount of boxes these actors tick off for awards voters, it is likely that we are underestimating this show’s chances for the SAG Comedy Ensemble category.
“Schmigadoon!” is a perfect performance showcase. Each episode features several full production numbers, with pitch perfect vocals and impressive choreography. One moment, Cecily Strong is educating young lovers about reproduction in a hysterical riff on “Do-Re-Mi” from “The Sound of Music.

“Till” tells the story of Mamie Till-Mobley (Deadwyler), chronicling her decision to have an open casket at Emmett’s funeral and allowing Jet magazine to publish David Jackson’s funeral photos in order to ensure people everywhere saw the true horrors of her son’s murder. Colman Domingo, Chris Rock, Glynn Turman and Audra McDonald will star in “Rustin,” an upcoming biopic about gay, civil rights activist Bayard Rustin. The film is the first narrative feature to be produced by Higher Ground, Michelle and Barack Obama’s production company.
George C. Wolfe, who previously oversaw “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with “Milk’s” Dustin Lance Black. Netflix will release the film under their deal with Higher Ground.
The film will look at the onslaught of obstacles that Rustin had to overcome to organize the 1963 March on Washington, which was where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his historic “I Have a Dream” speech. This is Theo's world, and we're all just living in it -- all of us except for Tim and Zoe, that is.
Only Murders In the Building Season 1 Episode 7 is, by far and away, the best episode of an already very strong season. It might be one of my favorite episodes of any show I've ever watched, honestly.
There's more to the episode than just how clever it was -- we've got more answers than we know what to do with.
I Knew Theo was up to something. I've been saying this since the beginning! He was too subtly conspicuous to be a red herring.
This show is way more intricate than it gets credit for. Everything has been meticulously plotted out. Every shot means something. It's so delicious to watch a show like this, with every morsel potentially a key to solving the mystery.
I sat upright the moment the episode began,...
