Arnold Schulman, Screenwriter on ‘Goodbye, Columbus’ and ‘Love With the Proper Stranger,’ Dies at 97
Arnold Schulman, who landed Oscar nominations for his screenplays for Love With the Proper Stranger and Goodbye, Columbus and found success with several incarnations of his Broadway hit A Hole in the Head, has died. He was 97.
Schulman died Saturday of natural causes at his home in Santa Monica, his son, Peter Schulman, told The Hollywood Reporter.
In two late-career triumphs, Schulman was recruited by Francis Ford Coppola to write the biopic Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988), and he scored an Emmy nomination and a Humanitas Prize in 1994 for his teleplay for HBO’s And the Band Played On, an adaptation of Randy Shilts’ nonfiction book about the onset of AIDS.
An original member of the Actors Studio, Schulman in the 1950s worked alongside the likes of James Dean and Paul Newman on live television. In 1962, he quit as the original screenwriter on the never-completed Marilyn Monroe movie Something’s Got to Give,...

As a director, George Clooney’s filmography has veered through different genres (most recently from the frigid edges of earth into outer space in the big-scale epic The Midnight Sky). But I don’t think he has ever hit us directly in the heart quite the way his latest, The Tender Bar, does.
The only special effect used in this exceptional and universally recognizable story is simply family. It is what they call in the trade a “feel good” movie, and boy, do we need it now. It should be no surprise that it all comes from real life, specifically a coming-of-age 2005 memoir written by, and about, Pulitizer Prize-winning author J.R. Moehringer and his life shaped by his time growing up in Manhasset, Long Island, specifically the local bar, Dickens, run by his Uncle Charlie. It is really where his education and life lessons from boy to young man were shaped,...

The Slovak director is working on the documentary All Men Become Brothers, about Alexander Dubček. Slovak director and producer Robert Kirchhoff, who directed a documentary about the Romani holocaust A Hole in the Head, has been preparing the feature project All Men Become Brothers, about “the icon of socialism with a human face,” Alexander Dubček, since 2015. The Czechoslovak and Slovak politician attempted to reform the communist government during the Prague Spring, and after the Velvet revolution, he became the chairman of the federal Czechoslovak parliament. In 1989, Dubček received the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. Kirchhoff called the project “the first complex film about Alexander Dubček – convinced communist, idealist, social democrat.” “The great plan of our modern history is reflected in the deeds and ideals of one man who no longer has the opportunity to speak about the controversies that accompany his decisions and personal conviction,” explains...

Italy’s Minerva Pictures — the company specialized in genre fare such as teen chiller “Shortcut” that recently made a U.S. splash — is launching world sales at AFM on “Mondocane,” a dystopian drama about the struggle of two 13-year-old orphan boys in a Southern Italian gangland.
“Mondocane” toplines Alessandro Borghi (“Devils”).
In “Mondocane,” Borghi (pictured) plays the leader of one of two gangs vying for control of the Southern Italian port city of Taranto which in a dystopian near-future that has become a no man’s land surrounded by barbed wire and abandoned by police. The film is being marketed as an “Oliver Twist tale in a ‘Mad Max’ setting,” Minerva Pictures international sales chief Francesca Delise told Variety.
Delise noted that for Minerva, “Mondocane” segues from the international success it saw with Alessio Liguori’s “Shortcut,” which despite the pandemic recently went out theatrically on almost 700 U.S. screens via Gravitas Ventures.

“You’ll know before the dance is through that you’re in love with her and she’s in love with you.”
That lyric is from the very first Best Song Oscar winner, “The Continental,” from the 1934 Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers musical, “The Gay Divorcee.” It’s a celebration of the power of dance to ignite the flames of desire.
Now “Shallow,” a more clear-eyed view on matters of the heart (“Ain’t it hard keeping it so hardcore?”) from “A Star Is Born” is part of that Academy Award tradition. But the fact is, such honored love songs are becoming a rarity.
It used to be that romantic tunes regularly caught Oscar’s ear. Occasionally, a song of yearning like 1939’s “Over the Rainbow” from “The Wizard of Oz,” “When You Wish Upon a Star” from 1940’s “Pinocchio” and “White Christmas” from 1942’s “Holiday Inn” broke through. There...

This year's Tribeca Film Festival is paying a special tribute to Frank Sinatra, with Sinatra at 100: Film & Music, a centennial celebration honoring his film career. As part of the event, there will be an April 21 screening of On The Town (1949) with High Society (1956) and Some Came Running (1958) being shown April 24. Among the three films, the 1958 feature, one of the greatest of all American movies, is of particular interest, especially when it comes to the dual nature of Sinatra the man, the actor, the screen persona, and the very films that frequently drew his talent. As a remake of The Philadelphia Story (1940), High Society depicts the humorous romantic frivolity of upper crust socialites. Some Came Running is something entirely different. This is “low society.” In Some Came Running, those on the margins, those who make up society's lower rungs, those are the more earnest, the more recognizable, and the more interesting.

A Hole in the Head
Written by Arnold Schulman
Directed by Frank Capra
USA, 1959
As the opening credits soar across the sky, shown as flapping aerial announcements pulled along by the Goodyear blimp, the talent behind A Hole in the Head is clear. The major players in this Frank Capra film include Frank Sinatra, Edward G. Robinson, Eleanor Parker, Carolyn Jones, Thelma Ritter, and Keenan Wynn. Behind the scenes, shown in a more typical credit scrawl, there is renowned cinematographer William H. Daniels and the equally legendary costumer designer Edith Head. To say A Hole in the Head has much in its favor is quite the understatement. Yet while it may not live up to the expectations one associates with such individuals, the picture is nonetheless thoroughly enjoyable, even if it feels something like an effortless throwaway from these key contributors.

The story of Harry and Sally is fine and all, but there are better couples in Rob Reiner‘s 1989 rom-com classic. And I’m not talking about Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher, either. For the 25th anniversary of When Harry Met Sally, I’d like to shine a light on the characters only credited as “documentary couples.” These seven pairs of adorable elderly folk are based on true stories, each one said to have been plucked from real people by screenwriter Nora Ephron. But we don’t know anything more about any of them. The actual couples don’t appear in the film but instead are portrayed by actors. Wonderful, old actors. Some of whom are still alive! Before we get to know each of these actors, let’s watch their appearances in Whms and once again enjoy the tales of fated spouses. “Arthur, you see that girl? I’m going to marry her.” The...

Versatile actor best known for her roles in The Sound of Music and Of Human Bondage
In the Hollywood of the 1940s and 50s, when typecasting was an essential constituent of stardom, Eleanor Parker, who has died aged 91, never gained the recognition she deserved, because she refused to be pigeonholed. "It means I've been successful in creating the characters that I've portrayed – that I'm not just a personality who is seen in a variety of roles." Dana Andrews, her co-star in Madison Avenue (1962), called her "the least heralded great actress".
The 1957 film Lizzie is almost a reflection of her career. Parker plays three separate and distinct characters harboured inside one woman – the shy, self-effacing Elizabeth; the wanton, raunchy Lizzie; and the "normal" Beth – and switches brilliantly from one to the other. Parker was always able to be convincing in these three sorts of characters. She was naive as the girl...

She lived a long and storied life as one of Tinseltown’s great actresses, and sadly Eleanor Parker passed away yesterday (December 9) in Palm Springs, California.
The late actress, who was 91 years old, was best known for her supporting actress role in “The Sound of Music,” playing Baroness Schraeder opposite Christopher Plummer.
Additionally, Parker received three Best Actress nominations from the Academy Awards during the course of her career, cementing her place in Hollywood history.
Plummer told the La Times, "Eleanor Parker was and is one of the most beautiful ladies I have ever known. I hardly believe the sad news for I was sure she was enchanted and would live forever."
Eleanor’s son Paul Clemens shared, "[Her part in the Sound of Music] was a lovely role, and she was terrific in it, but it was hardly her greatest role. It was only in the last 10 years of her life that she became glad she had done the film.

Eleanor Parker, the 3-time Academy Award nominated actress who played the baroness in The Sound of Music, died on Monday. She was 91.
Eleanor Parker Dies
Parker’s death was announced by family friend Richard Gale, who said that the actress died from complications stemming from a bout of pneumonia. She passed away at a Palm Springs medical facility, surrounded by her children.
The 1950s were Parker’s heyday in Hollywood, in which she received Oscar nods for Caged (1950), Detective Story (1951) and Interrupted Melody (1955). During the decade, she also appeared in Escape from Fort Bravo, Valley of the Kings, The Man with the Golden Arm and A Hole in the Head.
To modern audiences, Parker is best known for playing The Baroness in The Sound of Music, who tries futilely to woo Christopher Plummer’s Captain Von Trapp – who ends up smitten with Julie Andrew’s Maria. Upon leaning of Parker’s death,...

Los Angeles (AP) - Eleanor Parker, who was nominated for Academy Awards three times for her portrayals of strong-willed women and played a scheming baroness in "The Sound of Music," has died at 91.
Family friend Richard Gale said Parker died Monday morning due to complications from pneumonia. "She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children at a medical facility near her home in Palm Springs," Gale added.
Parker was nominated for Oscars in 1950, 1951 and 1955, but then saw her career begin to wane in the early 1960s. Her last memorable role came in 1965's "The Sound of Music," in which she played the scheming baroness who loses Christopher Plummer to Julie Andrews.

Parker was nominated for Oscars in 1950, 1951 and 1955, but then saw her career begin to wane in the early 1960s. Her last memorable role came in 1965's "The Sound of Music," in which she played the scheming baroness who loses Christopher Plummer to Julie Andrews.
"Eleanor Parker was and is one of the most beautiful ladies I have ever known," said Plummer in a statement. "Both as a person and as a beauty. I hardly believe the sad news...

Not to be confused with Stephen King's Sleepwalkers, what we have here is a beast of a different kind. From director Ryan Lightbourn (Roid Rage) comes a new indie tale riddled with the good stuff!
From the Press Release
From the mind that first introduced the world to killer hemorrhoids with his decorated short film Roid Rage (screened at over 50 film festivals internationally such as Screamfest La, Another Hole in the Head, Sacramento Horror Film Fest), Bahamian filmmaker Ryan Lightbourn has just wrapped his first feature length film, Sleepwalkers.
Sleepwalkers was completed over the course of only two weeks to accommodate both the most modest of budgets and a crew that consisted of less than 10 people. In addition, Lightbourn wrote, directed, produced, cast, and is solely responsible for all the post-production work of the movie (editing, scoring, visual effects, etc.).
The Sleepwalkers cast is comprised of a range of actors from veterans to newcomers.

Eleanor Parker 2013 movie series continues today (photo: Eleanor Parker in Detective Story) Palm Springs resident Eleanor Parker is Turner Classic Movies’ Star of the Month of June 2013. Thus, eight more Eleanor Parker movies will be shown this evening on TCM. Parker turns 91 on Wednesday, June 26. (See also: “Eleanor Parker Today.”) Eleanor Parker received her second Best Actress Academy Award nomination for William Wyler’s crime drama Detective Story (1951). The movie itself feels dated, partly because of several melodramatic plot developments, and partly because of Kirk Douglas’ excessive theatricality as the detective whose story is told. Parker, however, is excellent as Douglas’ wife, though her role is subordinate to his. Just about as good is Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee Lee Grant, whose career would be derailed by the anti-Red hysteria of the ’50s. Grant would make her comeback in the ’70s, eventually winning a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her...
