Reluctant hero saves the....night
I saw Flight Into Danger on Television..as a 9 year old in 1956. I pictured Dana Andrews as the WW2 pilot..on a flight in a DC6 I believe.. Weather, rough air...and a Flight Crew either incapacitated or dead because their in flight meal was "off." Aircraft did have a rudimentary auto pilot..probably not much more than wing leveler.....and the cabin crew and passengers were of course panicked.....Anyway, a WW2 pilot...single engine..was on board...had his own demons to overcome as well as strap into the left seat of that airliner...and somehow get it onto the ground......For its time, and having seen it again when I was in my twenties, the 'flying' scenes were realistic and the drama entrancing. The story line not so far fetched for the time period.....Catch it if you can. Dallas Reagh Rocklin CA

The pilots are either dead or unconscious, now what ?

This movie tells the story of a former air force pilot ( of one engine planes ) who has to try to land a large jet once the pilots succumb to food poisoning. There are a lot of trials and tribulations involved for sure. The book was written by Arthur Hailey, later of Airport and Hotel fame. The movie is pretty good for 1956 with some nice special effects and some good acting. Of course the 1979 comedy Airplane was somewhat based on Flight Into Danger. The pilots did get food poisoning and a former single engine pilot from the war ( what war we're not sure ! ) was forced to land the plane with lots of hilarious happenings and consequences.

As far as I can tell, unless you were watching this one when it came out in 1956, there is no other way it could have been viewed. The reviews here seem to indicate that at least 2 of the 3 reviewers, if not all three, have never even seen this particular movie but have seen the other remakes.

So if anyone out there can provide any information for viewing Flight Into Danger from 1956, I would love to view it and review it in any digital form. I would also accept the Alcoa Hour episode of Flight Into Danger made in the same year with a different cast which also appears to be unfindable. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0507662/

Plot Filmed several times.

Flight into Danger (1956) was the first to use this plot of passengers getting food poisoning on a flight. Next came Zero Hour (1957) and it was Zero Hour which starred Dana Andrews. He was not in Flight into Danger. In 1971 Terror in the Skies came along with Lief Ericson.

And finally in 1980 the wacky, wonderful, Airplane blessed us all with it's release. A lot of movie buffs claim Airplane was based on Flight into Danger, or Terror in the Skies. But according to IMDb it was Zero Hour as explained in this IMDb Quote: "The makers of Airplane! (1980) bought the rights to Zero Hour! (1957) to remake it. Much of the movie Airplane! (1980) is similar to Zero Hour! (1957) including using the same dialog."
