Richard Lester's fee for this film was a thousand pounds. The film was made in three weeks and Lester has always said that the "script" was a treatment running to just a few pages to which he added as many improvised jokes as he could devise.
The American artistes were recorded separately, in a US studio, as witnessed by the fact that there is no sign of the audience during their performances.
