On the very month that Roger Corman’s The Raven was to hit theaters in January 1963, Aip announced that they had just signed a four year eight-film contract with that film’s co-star Peter Lorre. The contract was an interesting one as it wasn’t exclusive: the actor wasn’t necessarily barred from accepting acting offers from other studios. But the contract stipulated Lorre could not accept any roles offered of “the horror, science-fiction, macabre type,” and certainly not in any competing non-aip Edgar Allan Poe film adaptation. Such movies would remain the domain of Aip, which had recently been on a hot streak with their churning of Gothic horrors. Arkoff and Nicholson triumphantly announced they had already readied two new projects for Lorre, one titled It’s Alive (reported to co-star Elsa (The Bride of Frankenstein) Lanchester and a second,...

Hello, dear readers! November is officially upon us, as well as a new week of Blu-ray and DVD releases, which means it’s time to make some room for more horror and sci-fi to fill your home entertainment shelves. One of this writer’s favorite indie genre movies of the year, Come True, is getting released to both Blu and DVD this week courtesy of Scream Factory, and Kino Lorber is showing some love to a pair of classic thrillers as well: The Spider Woman Strikes Back and The Mad Doctor. Other releases for November 2nd include The Banishing, Pig featuring Nicolas Cage, and The Spore.
The Banishing
From acclaimed genre director Chris Smith (Creep) comes the true story of the most haunted house in England. A young reverend, his wife and daughter move into a manor with a horrifying secret. When a vengeful spirit haunts the little girl and...

Vincent Price rose to fame in “The Fly,” “House on Haunted Hill,” “Witchfinder General,” “House of Wax,” and “The Abominable Dr. Phibes” but his filmography goes much deeper than horror movies.
A true renaissance man of the arts, Price earned a degree from Yale, where he studied English and art history. He worked as a lecturer before breaking into acting and landed his first leading role in the 1938 comedy, “Service de Luxe.” Price went on to appear in more than 100 films, including “The Ten Commandments” and “Laura and the Song of Bernadettes,” and had roles on TV shows from “Batman to “The Muppet Show Mystery.” He earned two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame,...

Jacques Tourneur’s 1964 horror romp retains most of the actors and crew from Roger Corman’s Poe adaptations—including poster art from Reynold Brown. The film lacks the luster of Mr. Corman’s efforts but with Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre, and Basil Rathbone on board, who’s complaining? Price and Lorre play luckless undertakers who start supplying their own corpses. Sad sack Lorre was a born comedian but it’s Rathbone as the landlord who won’t stay dead who gets the best laugh—”What place… is this?”

I turned age three one month prior to the January 1965 U.S. release of Roger Corman’s The Tomb of Ligeia. The film had been first released in England in November 1964 - which was only fair - since both The Tomb of Ligeia and its predecessor The Masque of the Red Death (also 1964) had been shot at Shepperton Studios and in the neighboring English countryside. I’m guessing that I only became acquainted with Corman’s octet of Poe adaptations when the films were televised on New York City’s 4:30 Movie in the mid-1970s.
I didn’t know quite what to make of the Aip Poe films at first. These were horror films without monsters and, at age fifteen, I had no particular interest in - or understanding of - “psychological horror” pictures… I wanted rubber-suit monsters sporting...

Blu ray
Kino Lorber
1963-64
Starring Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Boris Karloff
Cinematography by Floyd Crosby
Directed by Roger Corman, Jacques Tourneur
Roger Corman helped Vincent Price create his reputation as a horror movie star and in 1962 he helped him to dismantle it—already tiring of the gothic grind, the 37 year old director allowed rare humor to creep into his Poe series in the otherwise morbid Tales of Terror, a trilogy of economical horror stories written by Richard Matheson. The usual shocks were laced with laughs in the film’s second segment, The Black Cat, featuring a flamboyant Price as a two-timing wine taster. Corman and his cast enjoyed the distraction from the usual sturm und drang so the following year they returned to the well with a medieval burlesque called The Raven. Matheson was back too, contributing a simple story about Erasmus Craven...

Just back from the 2017 TCM Classic Movie Festival with a few thoughts and thoughts about thoughts. I certainly held my reservations about this year’s edition, and though I ultimately ended up tiring early of flitting about from theater to theater like a mouse in a movie maze (it happens to even the most fanatically devoted of us on occasion, or so I’m told), there were, as always, several things I learned by attending Tcmff 2017 as well.
1) TCM Staffers Are Unfailingly Polite And Helpful
Thankfully I wasn’t witness, as I have been in past years, to any pass holders acting like spoiled children because they had to wait in a long queue or, heaven forbid, because they somehow didn’t get in to one of their preferred screenings. Part of what makes the Tcmff experience as pleasant as it often is can be credited to the tireless work...

Welcome to another horror/thriller round-up! This time around we have details on Backstreet Boy Nick Carter’s in-the-works zombie western movie, release details for Arrow Video’s UK Blu-ray / DVD of the Vincent Price-starring The Comedy of Terrors, and an update on Warner Bros.’ and Team Downey’s in-development film based on the real-life sinking of the USS Indianapolis and the subsequent shark attacks on the surviving crew members.
In an interview with Noisey, Backstreet Boy Nick Carter revealed that he will be directing and starring in a zombie western called Dead West (not to be confused with Joe R. Lansdale’s 1986 zombie western novel, Dead in the West) for Asylum this March. Carter also co-wrote the script and has a couple of potential cast members in mind (excerpts from Noisey via Shock Till You Drop):
“It’s called Dead West. [Laughs.] It’s a zombie horror western movie.

The first Vincent Price collection from Scream Factory was a pure treasure. When October rolls around, almost nothing puts me in the Halloween mood like a constant stream of Vincent Price films on my TV. Never did I think that Scream could improve upon their original price collection, but when the films that would be included in this new set were announced, I was shocked. The first Vincent Price Collection has some really solid Price films, mostly of a Poe nature, and it was one of the most exciting releases of the year for fans of classic horror. The second set, drops the Poe theme(mostly), and includes some of Price’s most famous, well-regarded films, including a couple of my favorites. The list of films is impressive, and there are extras on most of the films. The packaging is consistent, and equally pleasing to the eyes. Scream Factory’s...

One of my favorite horror movies of all time, and required Halloween viewing at my house, is 1959’s House on Haunted Hill, directed by William Castle and starring the legendary Vincent Price. It’s impossible for me to hide the fact that Scream Factory is one of my favorite boutique media labels. The lone human fighting against an army of vampires, the wealthy host of a deadly party, a vengeful disfigured man who mourns the death of his wife through murder: screen legend Vincent Price has portrayed these and countless other memorable roles in the horror genre. The death of Richard Matheson on 22 June 2013 marked the end of an amazing career as a novelist and screenwriter. His most enduring legacy will always be as the author of I Am Legend, arguably one of the finest vampire novels ever written. Considered ‘the very peak of paranoid science fiction,’ Matheson’s groundbreaking debut novel is one of the few contemporary vampire stories that came close to the literary excellence of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
With plans of a sequel to the Will Smith misfire I Am Legend (2007) being seriously considered by filmmakers, there is only one thing that fans of Matheson’s outstanding post apocalyptic work are asking “when is there going to be a Proper film version of the book?”
Published in 1954, I Am Legend tells the terrifying tale of Robert Neville, the sole survivor of a mysterious airborne virus that has turned everyone, including his wife Virginia and best friend Ben Cortman,...

One of the giants, famed sci-fi author Richard Matheson, has died in California at the age of 87.
Matheson's most famous novel, "I Am Legend," has been adapted three times for the screen - most recently the 2007 version starring Will Smith.
Numerous other novels and short stories of his were turned into films including "Duel," "The Incredible Shrinking Man," "Somewhere in Time, "The Legend of Hell House," "The Comedy of Terrors," "Stir of Echoes," "What Dreams May Come," "The Box," and "Real Steel".
He himself penned numerous episodes of TV shows like "Star trek," "Night Gallery," "Lawman" and multiple episodes of "The Twilight Zone" including one of that show's most iconic stories - "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet".

Richard Matheson was an author and screenwriter who had a tremendous impact on the horror and sci-fi genres. We’re sad to pass on the news that he died yesterday at the age of 87. His daughter recently notified the public of his passing over Facebook and it’s said that he’s been battling illness for some time now:
“My beloved father passed away yesterday at home surrounded by the people and things he loved…he was funny, brilliant, loving, generous, kind, creative, and the most wonderful father ever…I miss you and love you forever Pop and I know you are now happy and healthy in a beautiful place full of love and joy you always knew was there…”
Even if you’re not immediately familiar with his work, it has influenced some of your favorite movies. He’s probably best known for writing I Am Legend, which has...

Did you know that Christopher Lee and Vincent Price share the same birthday? Vincent Price would have been 102 years old today, and I have a list of his films you should check out, along with an embedded version of House on Haunted Hill that you can watch for free.
While many remember Vincent Price for Edward Scissorhands, The Fly, and the Corman-produced Poe adaptations, there are plenty of lesser-known classics. For those of you haven’t seen The Last Man on Earth, I highly suggest watching it. You’ll notice how similar it is to the modern zombie story and looks like it served as inspiration for George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. Here are some other Price films that you may want to check out:
House of Wax, The Tingler, Tales of Terror, Twice-Told Tales, The Comedy of Terrors, The Masque of the Red Death, Witchfinder General,...

If you have Netflix and are a horror fan in need of something to watch this Labor Day weekend, one look at this gargantuan list I compiled of the new terror titles Netflix has added for instant streaming in just the first three days of this month should keep you busy until Labor Day next year. You'll find something for everyone, from older titles to recent releases, famous to obscure, classic to not-so-classic, monsters to maniacs - you name it.
For the record, I considered compiling this list in alphabetical order or by year of the film's release, but then I realized I had already spent well over an hour just sorting through the massive catalogue of titles Netflix has now made available for instant streaming and realized Labor Day would be over by the time I finished arranging this list in any kind of order. Ready? Here you go.

Look up on that marquee. Whose name do you see? László Löwenstein! Then you shake your head and wonder, “Who is László Löwenstein?” To film audiences around the world and until the day he died, he was known as Peter Lorre, one of my favorite actors and sadly not enough people know him apart from the Looney Tunes caricature that, while pretty brilliant, doesn’t show a fraction of his acting ability.
Today is a special day because his birthday is June 26th and he would be a ripe 106 years old. So here at the Criterion Cast, I would like to share with you my top 10 Peter Lorre films that I just absolutely adore. This isn’t a definitive list, so if you have any suggestions yourself, please list them down below in the comments section.
10. The Raven (1963)/ The Comedy of Terrors (1964)
Are these great films? Not at all, to be honest.
