• Piggy : I've got the conch!

  [the boys jeer and taunt him from above the cliff] 

  Piggy : [shouts]  What is it better to be, a pack of painted savages like you are, or sensible like Ralph is? Which is better, to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill?

  [Roger goes angry and pushes a huge boulder, which heads right to Piggy] 

  Piggy : AAH!

  Ralph : Piggy!

  [the boys go silently still and look sympathetic at Piggy's corpse washing away in the sea, except Roger who grins at what he's done] 

• Piggy : What's your name?

  Ralph : Ralph.

  Piggy : I don't care what they call me, as long as they don't call me what they did in school.

  Ralph : What's that?

  Piggy : They used to call me Piggy.

  Ralph : [laughs]  Piggy!

  Piggy : As long as you don't tell the others.

• Ralph : You're a beast, and a swine, and a bloody, bloody thief!

• Ralph : [after the night of Simon's murder]  Piggy, are you the only one left?

  Piggy : There are some littluns

  Ralph : They don't count. No biguns?

  Piggy : Oh, Samneric, they're collecting wood

  Ralph : Nobody else?

  Piggy : Not that I know of

  Ralph : [Sits down next to Piggy]  Piggy? Piggy?

  Piggy : [Zoned out]  Huh?

  Ralph : That was murder.

  Piggy : You stop it! What good are you doing talking like that? It was dark. There was that bloody dance. There was thunder and lightning and rain. We were scared. It wasn't... what you said.

  Ralph : [sobs]  Oh, Piggy!

  Piggy : [comforts Ralph]  It was an accident. He was batty. He asked for it. It was an accident.

  Ralph : Oh, God, I want to go home!

• Ralph : Piggy will look after them.

  Jack : [interrupts, sarcastically]  That's right, keep Piggy out of danger.

  Ralph : Haven't you got any sense? How can Piggy help with only one eye?

  Ralph : Jack, is there anywhere on this island where we haven't been?

  Jack : There's only- of course! The tail-end part, where the rocks pile up!

  [Cut to Piggy hearing another boy crying] 

• Piggy : [as the boys are talking about the beast]  I don't believe in no ghosts, ever.

  Jack : Who cares what YOU believe, Fatty!

  [the boys laugh] 

  Simon : [looking disturbed]  Maybe if there is a beast...

  [the boys laugh again] 

  Ralph : Hear him! He's got the conch.

  Simon : What I mean is... maybe, it's only us.

  Piggy : Nuts!

• Ralph : You let the fire out.

  Jack : We can light it up again.

• Ralph : [while swimming in the ocean]  Aren't you coming in?

  Piggy : Oh, it's hot. No, my auntie wouldn't let me, account of my asthma!

  Ralph : Sucks to your asthma!

  Piggy : You can't half swim well.

• Ralph : Samneric! Hey, Samneric! It's me, Ralph!

  [Sam and Eric, now painted warriors, approach him] 

  Ralph : When they find me, what are they going to do?

  Sam : Roger sharpened a stick at both ends. They're going to hurt you tomorrow.

  Eric : We've got to give signals, like this:

  [ululates] 

  Sam : Only louder, of course. You've got to go now, Ralph!

  Ralph : Won't you come with me? 3 of us would have a better chance

  [Sam and Eric hear someone else ululate] 

  Sam : Go, Ralph!

  Ralph : I'll be in that thicket there, they won't think to look so close!

  Sam : Who is it? Who's there?

  Eric : Attention!

  Sam : Eric, it's Roger

  Sam : [Gives Ralph meat]  Here, take this

  Roger : [Offscreen]  Attention!

  [Ralph leaves the way he came, and eats the meat under a tree] 

  Roger : [Offscreen]  Scouts' report?

  [ululates again] 

• Ralph : Are there ghosts, Piggy? Or beasts?

  Piggy : Of course there aren't.

  Ralph : Why not?

  Piggy : Because things wouldn't make sense. Houses and streets... and TV - they wouldn't work.

  Ralph : But suppose they wouldn't make sense, not here on this island... Supposing things are watching us, and waiting.

• Piggy : I didn't vote for no ghosts, remember that all of you

  Jack : You shut up, you fat slug!

  Piggy : [as Jack tries to wrestle the conch out of his hands]  I've got the conch!

  Ralph : Oh, Jack, let him speak! He's got the conch

  Jack : [to Ralph]  And YOU shut up! Who are you, anyway, just sitting there telling people what to do? You can't hunt! You can't sing!

  Ralph : I'm chief, I was chosen!

  Jack : Why should choosing make any difference? Telling people what to do...

  Ralph : Piggy's got the conch!

  Jack : That's right, favour Piggy as you always do!

  Ralph : Jack!

  Jack : [Mocking Ralph]  Jack! Jack!

  Ralph : The rules, you're breaking the rules!

  Jack : Who cares?

  Ralph : Because the rules are the only thing we've got!

  Jack : Bollocks to the rules! We're strong, we hunt. If there's a beast, we'll hunt it down, and beat, and beat!

  [All the boys except Ralph, Piggy, and Simon scream and run further down the beach] 

• Jack : First, you know now we've seen the beast. We crawled up, we were only a few feet away. The beast stopped and looked at us

  Ralph : I don't think we could fight a thing that size, honestly you know. We're tall, but we couldn't fight a tiger. We'd hide, even Jack would hide

  Jack : What about my hunters?

  Ralph : [Unconvinced]  Boys armed with sticks?

  Jack : Alright then!

  [to all the other boys] 

  Jack : He's not a hunter! He'd never have got us meat! He just gives orders and expects people to obey for nothing. He's like Piggy! He says things like Piggy! He's not a proper chief, he's a coward! On top when Roger and me went on; he stayed back!

  Ralph : I went too!

  Jack : After

  Ralph : I went on too, then I ran away, so did you!

  Jack : Call me a coward then, oh let's talk

  Ralph : Oh, let's talk, talk, talk!

  Jack : Right!

  [to all the other boys] 

  Jack : I'm not gonna be part of Ralph's lot! I'm going off by myself to the rocks to hunt and have feasts and have fun. Anyone who wants can come too!

  [Walks away by himself] 

  Ralph : Jack!

• Simon : I don't believe in the beast

  Ralph : I suppose not

• Piggy : [to all the choir boys]  And what are all of your names?

  [the choir boys one by one answer with their respective name: Henry, Maurice, Robert, Rupert, Harold, Bill, Roger, Simon] 

  Jack : I'm Jack

  Piggy : Yeah that boy there, he...

  Jack : You're talking too much! Shut up, fatty!

  Ralph : His name's not "Fatty", his real name's "Piggy"

  Jack : Piggy!

  [All the boys laugh at Piggy]
