After changing the landscape of American drive-in movies forever with 1963’s Blood Feast, Herschell Gordon Lewis quickly followed that film up with 2,000 Maniacs! and Color Me Blood Red. But Lewis was never one to sit around and relax after another drive-in triumph was in the can. In between these primitive gore classics he also directed other films including nudie cuties, roughies, documentaries, and even a family film entitled Jimmy, the Boy Wonder. But 1967 saw Lewis return to the horror genre with not one, but three, horror features. Two of these films are included in this package.
First up is the film that is highlighted on the packaging for this Blu-ray: The Gruesome Twosome. While H.G.’s first three horror opuses may have generated some (unintentional) laughs, his goal with The Gruesome Twosome was to inject some true black humor into the mix. This begins with the title of the flick.

A few words about H G Lewis, 'the godfather of gore', who died yesterday...
This week is a sad one for horror fans, as it marks the passing of Herschell Gordon Lewis (June 15, 1929 - September 26, 2016), a man whose pioneering splatter movies changed the genre forever. While even his most well-known work is perhaps still not widely seen outside of horror circles, this is part of what makes him one of the quintessential purveyors of it. Horror - especially at its extreme end - has always been an outsider's genre, offputting and disturbing to wider crowds. Sure, a lot of the tropes and extremities that Lewis introduced are commonplace now in major pictures but his work (although shot primarily to make money from the drive-in circuit in the early 60s) has remained on the fringes. A cult favourite for those in the know.

Herschell Gordon Lewis' Blood Feast
One of the most influential filmmakers of his generation, horror icon Herschell Gordon Lewis, passed away today at the age of 87. An advertising man who turned his talents to exploitation in the early Sixties and made a total of 49 films, progressing from nudie cuties to full on horror. He was known for his febrile imagination, his love of gratuitous gore and his habit of feeding his cast and crew members exclusively on Kentucky Fried Chicken until they were sick.
Lewis' most important film was 1963's Blood Feast, celebrated for its joyous ineptitude and widely hailed as the first ever splatter movie. Its impact on cinema was considerable, spawning literall hundreds of imitations, and it was recently remade by Marcel Walz. Other career highlights included Two Thousand Maniacs, Color Me Blood Red, The Gruesome Twosome and She-Devils On Wheels. Following his retirement from the industry,...

Herschell Gordon Lewis, the so-called "Godfather of Gore" who is widely credited with inventing the "splatter" sub-genre, has died. He was 87. During his brief career as a writer, director and producer of low-budget exploitation films, Lewis achieved infamy with titles like Blood Feast, Two Thousand Maniacs! and The Wizard of Gore, the first of which is generally considered the first "splatter" film and was so reviled by critics on release in 1963 that Variety deemed it "an insult even to the most puerile and salacious of audiences." Nonetheless, the film's boundary-pushing nature made it a huge hit with audiences, leading to a new acceptance of onscreen gore and paving the way for more artful filmmakers like Tobe Hooper, Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson. Born June 15, 1929 in Pittsburgh, Lewis earned a master's degree in Journalism at Northwestern University and had a varied early career, working alternately as a college professor, TV commercial director and voiceover artist.

Herschell Gordon Lewis’ masterpiece Blood Feast (1963) was the stomach churning movie by “The Godfather of Gore” that opened the floodgates to the countless blood and slasher movie that followed since its release over fifty years ago. The godfather of gore himself, Herschell Gordon Lewis, will be hosting a marathon of his films at the International House Philadelphia on Sunday, August 21. “The H.G. Lewis Gore-a-Thon” will feature Blood Feast, 2000 Maniacs, Color Me Blood Red, and The Gruesome Twosome, before closing out the night with 1967’s The Wizard Of Gore. All the films will be presented in glorious 35mm, the only way Exhumed Films knows how.
Blood Feast is generally credited as the first “gore film.” Lewis’s low-budget shlocker from 1963 was a response to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, which Lewis felt cheated the audience by showing the aftermath of murder, but ton the action. Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time for one reason: the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. I am including documentaries, short films and mini series, only as special mentions – along with a few features that can qualify as horror, but barely do.

Know your audience! British online sales giant Tesco was recently scolded for selling a controversial coloring book. Colour Me Good, Arrggghhhh was marketed as a children's coloring book but actually features images from classic horror films! Awesome!
With pages for children to color that feature things like Janet Leigh's classic Psycho shower scene, a Jaws-themed water skiing pic and the unforgettable "Heeeere's Johnny" scene from The Shining, among others, buyers quickly shit themselves when shopping for children's gifts. Okay, maybe it's not the perfect present for an elementary school child, but damn, I know I want one!
While looking for a birthday present for his seven-year-old grandson, Chris Tuckwood, 56, of Spondon, Derby, UK, discovered the book on Tesco.com and raised a stink. ‘The Lost Films of Herschell Gordon Lewis’ Collection Reveals the X-Rated Side of the Wizard of Gore
It’s not uncommon for film directors to find themselves categorized into a specific niche, but it’s almost always interesting (and occasionally fun) to see their attempts at operating outside those expectations. Herschell Gordon Lewis‘ career has seen him work in all manner of genres, but the perception of him as “the wizard of gore” remains. Films like Blood Feast, Two Thousand Maniacs, Color Me Blood Red, The Gore Gore Girls and others have made H.G. Lewis synonymous with goofy, technicolor blood baths. But he also had a softer, dirtier side made evident through a series of T&A films produced both before and after his horror flicks. Fans are aware of most of them, but three were thought lost to history… until now. Vinegar Syndrome is a brand spanking new specialty label, and their debut release is as important and well-crafted as any label could hope for. The Lost Films of Herschell Gordon Lewis collects...

There are a few fan favorites from the VHS era that are favorites solely because of they are completely indicative of the VHS boom in the mid 80’s. One movie that would qualify for this distinction would be Terror on Tape. It’s got one of the sexiest covers in the history of media packaging and is ripe for the nostalgic horror fan who sees a VHS tape being squeezed by a monster hand as a symbol of their own frustration and adoration for this somewhat lost medium (somewhat lost because it’s making a creeping comeback). Comet Video and Continental (same thing different name) put this one out as a sort of advertisement for the titles that Continental was distro-ing. Little did they know that the film itself would take on its own life as a piece of iconographic advertising. It’s a collection of short clips from some...

I first discovered Herschell Gordon Lewis at age 13 or 14, when I discovered Color Me Blood Red at the local video store. As is the intent of exploitation cinema, I was drawn to the brazen title and lurid video box. Since that day, I have been a diehard H.G. Lewis fan, and I must admit, I geeked out when I found out I would be speaking to the Godfather of Gore. At 82 years old, he is more cogent and better spoken than a man half his age, and is still making movies. As his seminal gore classics - Color Me Blood Red, Two Thousand Maniacs, and Blood Feast - are released on blu-ray, and a new documentary, Godfather of Gore hits DVD, I got the chance to talk to him about the grindhouse days of yore, how the business has changed, and...

He’s been hailed as both a visionary and a provocateur but what sets iconic writer/director/producer Herschell Gordon Lewis apart from the rest of his peers is how business-minded his approach to the horror genre has always been since the very beginning.
Before introducing audiences to an entirely new world of movies that celebrated gore and cartoonishly brutal violence, Lewis made a name for himself as the director of several "nudie-cutie" flicks throughout 1960 and 1961. Seeing the potential for money in delivering a "shocking" product to an audience hungry for something new, Lewis set out to stun horror fans with his first ever splatter flick Blood Feast which ended up being the launching pad for the gore movement in horror cinema.

Infamous filmmaker Herschell Gordon Lewis, creator of the now legendary films Blood Feast and Two Thousand Maniacs is back with a truly odd-ball (and of course gory) satire called The Uh-Oh Show.

I first met Zach Clark last October when his excitingly subversive, sex-scene-less SXSW hit Modern Love Is Automatic opened Pornfilmfestival Berlin (where my own short The Story of Ramb O had its premiere). Since we barely had the chance to chat in the buzzing, jam-packed Moviemento hub, I was thrilled when I heard recently that Clark’s follow-up Vacation! (pictured above) was already on the festival circuit and would be playing theatrically at Brooklyn’s own reRun Gastropub Theater in May. Finally I had an excuse to find out what makes this offbeat yet seemingly well-adjusted director of a feature about a nurse who moonlights as a dominatrix, and now a flick about four chicks whose weekend getaway goes bizarrely awry, tick.
Vacation! plays for one week at reRun, beginning tonight, May 13.
Filmmaker: In terms of aesthetics, both Modern Love and Vacation! inevitably conjure up comparisons to John Waters and even John Hughes.

Greetings, horror geeks! Today, I have a special interview with the winning director of the “The Hobo With A Shotgun Trailer Contest,” Keith Hodder. His entry Van Gore, took home the bloody prize and has many people wondering whether or not the serial-killing artist will expand onto the big screen. Check out what Hodder has to say about that as well as his thoughts on exploitation films and the future of some of his other projects.
Where did the idea for Van Gore come from?
When we heard about the trailer, I sat down a bit. Usually when I sit down and think, I get pretty lucky and ideas tend to come up that night or the next day. The idea of Van Gore just popped into my mind. It originally started as an artist that drained people’s blood. I started thinking about what kinds of weapons he would...

The fine folks behind grindhouse throwback Hobo with a Shotgun (currently on VOD; in theaters starting May 6th) recently held a faux Grindhouse Trailer contest, which makes sense since Hobo started as a faux grindhouse trailer itself. Many entered and 5 finalists were chosen: Van Gore, Daddy Cross, Earwigs, Charlene She Wolf of My Heart and Care Center Slaughterhouse. The public voted and Van Gore, a Color Me Blood Red inspired splatter fest about a demented artist who lures his fans into becoming more a part of his art than they ever imagined emerged victorious. The other day I had the chance to chat with Van Gore writing/directing team Keith Hodder & Peter Strauss to talk about all of the ingredients that make a...

The Last House on the Left
Directed by Wes Craven
Screenplay by Wes Craven
1972, USA
Much like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and I Spit On Your Grave, Last House on the Left is a prime example of the discrepancy of censorship in independent horror films. The film developed such a bad reputation that it was banned in several countries due to scenes of sadism and violence, and in 1982 was put on the “video nasties” list by the Department of Public Prosecutions. But thanks to critics such as Mark Kermode and Roger Ebert, who praised the film as an important piece of work, it eventually picked up a rabid cult following, and is still ranked by mane as one of Craven’s best films.
Loosely based on Ingmar Bergman’s The Virgin Spring, the exploitation flick follows two teenage girls (on route to score some weed before a rock concert), who...

This past Monday, February 14, David F. Friedman passed away at the age of 87. As a producer and distributor, Friedman certainly left his mark on the history of cinema, ranging from classical exploitation in the 1940s, the European import boom of the ’50s, the nudies and slashers of the ’60s, and the modern exploitation era of the ’70s. He’ll forever be one of the greatest champions of fun, excessive cinema, a true legend in the “give-the-people-what-they-want” tradition, back when that actually meant something.
Friedman’s first major foray into the exploitation world came from working with Kroger Babb after World War II. Babb was one of the great classical exploitation kingpins, and he brought Friedman on to work on publicity and distribution for his roadshow titles. Among dozens of others, Friedman helped Babb peddle Mom And Dad, the sex-hygiene film that was among the top 10 highest grossing films of both the 1940s and the 1950s.

Legendary B-movie producer David F. Friedman passed away on Monday in a nursing home in Anniston, Alabama. He was 87 years old.
Although director Herschell Gordon Lewis is typically credited as the Godfather of Gore, i.e. the man who invented the splatter movie with his infamous 1963 horror flick Blood Feast, the film was in fact a collaboration between Lewis and Friedman. The two men came up with the general story while Lewis directed it and Friedman produced.
The two men had originally started out making “nudie cutie” and nudist colony cheapo films with titles such as The Adventures of Lucky Pierre (1961) and Nature’s Playmates (1962), until Lewis struck upon the idea of making a film that included the kind of graphic violence that Hollywood studios had shied away from.
Friedman produced Blood Feast with just $24,500 and the film was allegedly a runaway box office smash, encouraging the two gore-mongers to...

One of the most prolific horror film producers in the game has taken his final curtain call and is sadly no longer with us. You may not know his name, but we know you're very familiar with his work.
According to The New York Times long time Herschell Gordon Lewis collaborator and splatter film pioneer, producer David F. Friedman, passed away at age 87 on Monday at his home in Anniston, Alabama.
The man's resume is as long as it is impressive with titles like Blood Feast, Color Me Blood Red, Two Thousand Maniacs, Ilsa: She-Wolf of the S.S., and most recently Tim Sullivan's 2001 Maniacs and 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams. The man was from the old school of fearless filmmaking and lived his life to the fullest until the very end.
We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to offer our sincerest of condolences to Friedman's friends,...

Herschell Gordon Lewis films are often far from from great films but they helped define a unique time in American exploitation cinema and films such as Blood Feast or The Wizard of Gore helped break new ground in what could be seen in film. In Herschell Gordon Lewis – The Godfather of Gore Frank Henenlotter and Jimmy Maslon, aided by interviews with Lewis himself, John Waters, Joe Bob Briggs and others, investigate the films of Lewis and the stories behind their production.
Herschell Gordon Lewis’ career began with a handful of films that fitted within a genre often described as nudie cutie pictures. These were films that featured a lot of female nudity but had a light-hearted tone and no actual sex scenes. After having a pretty decent hit with one such nudie cutie, The Adventure of Lucky Pierre in 1961, Lewis’ next significant foray into exploitation was also his first move...

Near the end of Friday night's screening of Herschell Gordon Lewis - The Godfather of Gore, right at the point where the villain of The Gore Gore Girls takes a meat tenderizer and a salt shaker to a woman's behind, my viewing companion turned to me and said that she had to wait outside until the film was over. This is someone who had sat with me through Fantasia film after Fantasia film for years, through the most disgusting blood and guts epics, and now she had reached her limit in the celebration of the entrepreneurial gorehound. I can't say that I blame her. The work of Herschell Gordon Lewis is a strange and often overlooked chapter in the history of American horror, and there's something that still grabs the viewer in his depictions of mayhem inflicted upon the female body. Seeing the unconvincing violence in the context of such...

If it wasn’t for Herschell Gordon Lewis, the horror world might be a very different place. Known to many as the “Godfather of Gore,” his 1963 gorefest masterpiece Blood Feast changed the face of horror forever by giving audiences their first ever taste of bloodlust on the big screen.
“Blood Feast is a prime example of why you don’t necessarily need a huge budget to have an enduring film,” explained Lewis. “We made it for next to nothing and over 40 years later, Blood Feast is one of those films that people still talk about.”
Lewis added, “These days, some of these so-called horror movies come along and all they do is strut around for a bit and then they vanish. They don’t endure because a lot of them are missing the entertainment value to them. The reason Blood Feast has lasted so long is because we knew how...
