Saved by Herman

This is by far one of the better Daffy and Speedy cartoons but it is unexceptional really. What helps elevate it is Herman the Robot who guarantees some laughs, and Daffy gives one of his better performances in a Speedy cartoon. I don't mind Speedy that much, and he was fine here. The music has some nice touches, Mel Blanc is great with the voices and there is some funny dialogue, but... the animation should have been much better than this. The Speedy cartoons often have animation that isn't that great and while Daffy Rents is better in animation than Quacker Tracker the backgrounds still looks dull. The story is predictable and some of the sight gags are hit and miss. Overall, as far as Daffy and Speedy cartoons go, while it had many problems this one is surprisingly watchable. 7/10 Bethany Cox

The Best Of The Daffy/Speedy Series
MartyD82-116 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Psychiatric doctor Ben Crazy has a high number of cat patients due to Speedy Gonzales' annual visitation of his hospital. To get rid of the pest, he calls Daffy Rents. Daffy brings over his robot Herman to get rid of Speedy. Unfortunately, even he may be no match for "that dirty rodent."

Although by no means comparable with the classic WB shorts of the 40s and 50s, this is probably the best of the mid-1960s Daffy/Speedy shorts. The robot Herman's interaction with Daffy is funny (particularly their argument over who's payed how much for the job), as are some of their means to catch Speedy and the mouse's constantly successful attempts at thwarting them. Daffy is, for better or for worse, a little less bitter/nasty than usual in this cartoon (although he still has that cynical/greedy personality we all love about him) and Speedy's personality is put to surprisingly good use here. Clever plot too.

Overall, this is ultimately the best of the Daffy/Speedy series. That, of course, isn't saying a whole lot. But this is one case where "Best Of The Worst" is actually a more than dubious honor.

The best of a bad series

The doctor in a hospital has an alarming number of cat patients who have been driven crazy by Speedy Gonzales. When Speedy comes into the hospital, the doctor turns to Daffy Rentals to help catch him. Daffy brings Herman, his robotic mouse catching machine. However, Speedy is not that easy to catch.

I love Daffy Duck; when he was in his early, crazy period there were no funnier characters - to quote many characters - he was silly, and I liked him! Here Speedy says that line but it is meaningless as Daffy isn't being silly here - he is being greedy and basic. Speedy is his usual bland self but the robot Herman is funny enough to add enough spice to make the rather weak material feel different.

As with all Daffy/Speedy films - this is rubbish! The material is weak here as it often is, but it is still better than the rest of the series! The banter between Daffy and his robot is OK and it covers the gaping humour void that usually exists between Daffy and Speedy. It's not great but it actually made me laugh - which is more than the rest of the series managed put together. The final scene doesn't make a great deal of sense (where's the woman?) but the final line of dialogue is pretty funny!

Overall this is the best Daffy/Speedy film I have seen, but it is important to remember that, comparatively, that means almost nothing!
