All the elements of a classic duel are shown here...except for the characters' seconds. A true duel would have these 'back up' persons present.
Both Tom and Jerry have Grinch like expressions at times, which is hardly surprising, since Chuck Jones also directed the original TV cartoon version of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" that same year.
Although the idea of a classic duel usually involves pistols at dawn, the characters here also use cannons, bows and arrows, slingshots, epees...and white gloves.
The influence of the Adam West-Burt Ward Batman TV series (1966) is seen here, with sound effect words being splashed across the screen.
This is the first Tom and Jerry short where the score is credited to Dean Elliott. Elliot would remain the main composer of the Tom and Jerry film series until 1967.
