Officially the island that appears in this film is called Monsterland. It is located in on the Ogasawara Island chain and is home to the world's monsters. It only appears in this film and is different from Monster Island, which would be introduced in the next film, All Monsters Attack. Stock footage of Monsterland would be use to represent Monster Island in subsequent films which might lead to confusion.
A misconception is that the film takes place in the year 1999. This is only true in the English dub and is never mentioned in the original Japanese audio. The narration in the Japanese version states that the events take occur near the end of the century, making the exact time ambiguous. Newspapers designed to be used in the film were dated 1994, though this goes unseen in the final film.
