Sex & Nudity

  • A young female zombie is shown fully nude from the rear twice and both scenes are very brief.
  • The fully naked female zombie is seen with her breasts exposed, it's dark however, and lasts only a few seconds.

Violence & Gore

  • Zombies engage in fights with humans, the scenes are possibly intense and unsettling for sensitive viewers.
  • A zombie is seen being shot three times. Twice in the chest and once in the head. We see the exit wounds and moderate blood of the first two but the head shot is barely covered by a shadow as it falls to the ground.
  • A few zombies are set on fire.
  • A zombie has its fingers cut off
  • This movie was released in 1968, so it is pretty tame for today's standards and compared to other horror films, especially its sequel Dawn of the Dead which is extremly graphic.
  • Several scenes showing zombies eating body parts
  • A man gets into a fight with a zombie and is subsequently killed.
  • A partially decomposed face of a dead body is shown. Very surprising
  • A man has his skull crushed.
  • A man and woman are blown up in a car.
  • A little zombie girl kills a woman with a masonry trowel. This is probably the goriest scene in the whole movie.
  • A woman is dragged into a large group of zombies and killed offscreen.
  • A man is shot in the stomach and then eaten by zombies.
  • A man is shot in the head. Not graphic, but surprising and very unsettling

Profanity

  • "God," "hell," "damn," and "bastard" respectively.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Drugs: None
  • Alcohol: None
  • A man smokes throughout the film. A woman is seen smoking once.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The film has a grim tone and realistically disturbing content.
  • This is the first film about a zombie apocalypse, with a focus on a group of survivors trapped in a house on the countryside
  • Scenes of canibalism where zombies eat dead victims. Quite graphic and may be disturbing.
  • A girl is seen sick and suffering (although treated with care in the film).

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • All of the main characters die.
  • Heavy and often times depressing social commentary and themes throughout, including the shocking ending in which the film's main hero, Ben, a black man, is thoughtlessly shot and killed by a mob of white men hunting zombies. His corpse is later shown unceremoniously heaped upon a pyre of other corpses. Very upsetting and bleak.
  • A young girl becomes a zombie, eats her father and murders her mother.
