Lara Parker, who found the role of a lifetime at just 28 years old when she was cast by Dark Shadows producer Dan Curtis as the beautiful, vengeful and altogether evil witch Angelique Bouchard Collins, died October 12 in her sleep in Los Angeles following a battle with cancer. She was 84.
Her death was announced by producer Jim Pierson of Dan Curtis Productions, on behalf of Parker’s family.
“I’m heartbroken, as all of us are who knew and loved her,” said her Dark Shadows co-star and longtime friend Kathryn Leigh Scott in a statement. “She graced our lives with her beauty, talent and friendship, and we are all richer for having had her in our lives.”
Parker, who also authored four popular Dark Shadows-related novels from 1998-2016, arrived on the supernatural soap opera in 1967, not long after Canadian actor Jonathan Frid had been cast as vampire Barnabas Collins. Frid...

This article contains House of Dark Shadows spoilers.
In 1970 House of Dark Shadows flipped the vampire subgenre on its head. While certainly a B-horror in the Hammer mold, this chiller wasn’t satisfied with one bloodsucker, or even two. Instead Dark Shadows would turn nearly its whole cast into the ravenous undead, indiscriminately slaughtering beloved heroes and heroines, not caring for a second that they were also the stars of a daytime soap opera—one that was appointment TV for millions of kids across America.
Clearly it was a different time. And therein lies its charm.
When the television series Dark Shadows premiered in 1966, it wasn’t an instant pop culture phenomenon. Creator Dan Curtis was savvy enough to see the appeal in a daytime melodrama draped in a Gothic aesthetic, but he didn’t yet have the necessary hook for his central character as she stepped off a train in New England.

Bob Cobert, the Grammy- and Emmy-nominated composer of television’s “Dark Shadows” and “The Winds of War,” died of pneumonia Feb. 19, in Palm Desert, Calif. He was 95.
Cobert’s themes for the 1960s Gothic horror soap “Dark Shadows” – “great spook music,” he once called it – were his most popular compositions, and “Quentin’s Theme” (for the character played by David Selby) became a top 10 hit in 1969 as recorded by the Charles Randolph Grean Sound, earning a Grammy nomination as Best Instrumental Theme.
The “Dark Shadows” score, the first daytime soap to generate a best-selling soundtrack album, cemented Cobert’s partnership with the series’ creator-producer Dan Curtis, who continued to employ Cobert on nearly all of his television and film projects for the next four decades.
They did four features and more than two dozen television films together. Their largest-scale project was “The Winds of War,” the 18-hour 1983 miniseries based on...

John Karlen, the Dark Shadows actor who loosed a 200-year-old vampire from a chained coffin and two decades later won an Emmy Award for playing a detective’s husband on Cagney & Lacey, died yesterday of congestive heart failure in hospice in Burbank, California. He was 86.
Karlen’s death was announced via Twitter on the Dark Shadows News page. The actor had been in declining health for a decade. Last March, the ShadowGram Dark Shadows newsletter posted that Karlen had suffered a stroke.
Kathryn Leigh Scott, the actress-turned-author who played Dark Shadows‘ heroine (and frequent victim) Maggie Evans, has written books about the show and participated in the show’s many annual fan festivals, wrote on her blog, “Memories, memories… this morning I’m awash in memories of darling John Karlen, who left us yesterday. I’m told he passed peacefully, for which I’m grateful, but hardly seems in character for our Johnny.

"The Haunting" (1963): our choice for best haunted house flick of all time.
On Friday, October 2, Turner Classic Movies (North America) will present back-to-back showings of some delectable and diabolical tales of the macabre. Things kick off at 8:00 Pm (Est) with Cesar Romero as a mad magician in the highly entertaining "Two on a Guillotine". Then Vincent Price stars in William Castle's tongue-in-cheek thriller "House on Haunted Hill". This is followed by one of our favorite films of all time from director Robert Wise: "The Haunting" starring Julie Harris, Richard Johnson, Claire Bloom, Russ Tamblyn, Lois Maxwell and that creepy mansion that deserves co-star billing. Next up is a shlock flick "House of the Seven Corpses" with John Ireland with "House of Dark Shadows" starring Jonathan Frid bringing the chills to a conclusion in the wee small hours. It's a good night to be grateful if you suffer from insomnia.

This week, Entourage fans get to watch the boys bring their brand of Hollywood bro-ishness to the big screen, nearly four years after the TV series aired its final episode. Of course, it's far from the first cinematic adaptation of a TV series, but in this age of reboot upon reboot, it's notable that this one has migrated to the silver screen intact – it's a movie "sequel" featuring the same actors and characters as the original TV show.
Here's a short history of the many other TV shows that have continued their stories in the form of theatrical films.

In about one month, horror hounds will gather in the glow of the silver screen at Vandergrift, Pa’s Drive-In Super Monster-Rama, but the celluloid celebration doesn’t stop there. The following weekend, about three hours north of Vandergrift in the town of Montgomery, Pa, another retro horror show is taking place at the Pike Drive-in Theater.
Held on September 19th and 20th, four old-school horror films will play in 35mm color at the Pike Drive-In Theater, highlighted by an extremely rare and high quality 35 mm print of 1970′s House of Dark Shadows, which will make it the first time in decades that the vampire movie based on Dan Curtis’ Dark Shadows TV show has played at a drive-in theater. Also included in the film lineup is a rare, uncut 35 mm print of 1976′s UK horror flick, The House by the Lake, aka Death Weekend, as well as the 1966 cult favorite War Between the Planets.

It's a great time to be a fan of Dark Shadows. Thanks to Tim Burton's revamp, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has seen fit to give enthusiasts of the gothic / horror soap what they've wanted for years - high-definition editions of the theatrical releases House of Dark Shadows and Night of Dark Shadows. House of Dark Shadows is an abridged version of the Barnabas Collins storyline of the popular television show. However, creator / director Dan Curtis was forced to explore different plot avenues with Night of Dark Shadows.
Night of Dark Shadows focuses on the arrival of artist Quentin Collins (David Selby) and his wife, Tracy (Kate Jackson), to his newly inherited home, Collinwood. He's greeted by the mysterious housekeeper, Carlotta Drake (Grayson Hall), and the caretaker, Gerard Stiles (Jim Storm). The Walt Disney classic finally makes it high definition debut. Though it was made over half a century ago, Cinderella remains a timeless work of animation. Part of its lasting appeal can be attributed to the amazing concept art of Mary Blair, whose gorgeous backgrounds and unique color palettes help to define its iconic visual style. Though she was only credited with color and styling, her influence in the look and feel of the finished product cannot be denied. Another aspect that is often overlooked is the lovely vocal contribution by actress Ilene Woods. Another Halloween treat will be coming on October 30th this year. And don’t worry, it’s not the Tim Burton and Johnny Depp Dark Shadows. It’s the original stuff. House Of Dark Shadows and Night Of Dark Shadows, two features based on the Dark Shadows soap opera, released in 1970 and ’71 respectively, are now coming to DVD and Blu-Ray for the first time, according to DVD Active.
They are priced at $14.96 each on DVD and $19.98 on Blu-Ray. Unfortunately, a theatrical trailer is the only special feature to be find on both films. The House Of Dark Shadows stars Jonathan Frid as Barnabas Collins, Grayson Hall and Kathryn Leigh Scott. The Night Of Dark Shadows stars David Selby as Quentin Collins, with Kate Jackson, Grayson Hall and Lara Parker co-starring.

In August 1981, at the age of twelve, I viewed my very first horror film, Dan Curtis' 1976 theatrical outing Burnt Offerings, based upon the 1973 novel of the same name by Robert Marasco. I was immediately impressed with the film's spooky quality and the performances by Oliver Reed, Karen Black, Bette Davis, and Burgess Meredith. One area that stood out most was the chillingly icy score by Robert Cobert. I was eager to discover other works directed by Mr. Curtis and it would be nearly 30 years before I would finally see episodes of what is arguably his most popular production, the soap opera/thriller Dark Shadows. Running for nearly five years on ABC-tv from 1966 to 1971 and consisting of 1,225 episodes in total (some of which were in black and white), Dark Shadows is an enjoyably spooky production that was shot on videotape. Even immortal vampire Barnabas Collins himself would find it a Herculean task to wade through all 1,225 episodes of the original "Dark Shadows" TV series. To put it in perspective, a new complete coffin-shaped DVD box set boasts a runtime of 30,000 hours, and that's without bathroom breaks.
The supernatural soap opera, which ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971, is now getting the full-on feature film treatment. "Dark Shadows" (the movie) has all the big-budget trimmings courtesy of director Tim Burton and his muse Johnny Depp as Barnabas. Before you devour the May 11 release, we've created an easy-breezy introduction to all the things you'll find lurking in the "Shadows."

Nearly 50 years ago, Gothic soap Dark Shadows hooked audiences with its spooky storylines and before-its-time remorseful vampire. Ahead of Tim Burton’s movie adaptation, a new DVD version of the show--a limited edition $600 complete series containing all 1220+ episodes packaged in a coffin--comes out Tuesday. Over at The Daily Beast, you can read "The Enduring Thrills of Dark Shadows," in which I reflect upon the enduring legacy of afternoon soap opera Dark Shadows and its influence upon popular culture today. I grew up watching both the 1991 revival series (which aired during primetime on NBC during the Gulf War) and the original, watching whatever scraps I could get my hands on from VHS tapes at Blockbuster and syndicated runs of the show. It remains a magical experience unlike anything on television to this day. In Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, due in theaters Friday, Johnny Depp puts on the fangs of immortal vampire Barnabas Collins,...

Vengeful! Ruthless! Cruel! Romantic! Compassionate! Regretful!
These are among the adjectives that describe the vast spectrum of emotions that actor Jonathan Frid most capably incorporated into his rendition of vampire Baranbas Collins on the Gothic soap opera, Dark Shadows. For me, every episode of that series was a special treat when he was included in the cast! Hearing his voice and seeing him on screen made that day memorable.
Sadly, Frid just passed away at age 87, only a few weeks before the new cinematic version of Dark Shadows starring Johnny Depp will be hitting the theaters, including a cameo appearance by him as a party guest (along with 3 other co-stars from the series, Kathryn Leigh Scott, Lara Parker, and David Selby). Of course, I would have wanted him to have a more substantial role, but I am grateful that he was at least invited for a walk-on.

In 1966 Kathryn Leigh Scott, fresh out of acting school and working part time as a Playboy bunny, was was cast as Maggie Evans the waitress-turned-governess on the ABC-tv cult serial Dark Shadows. In its prime, the Dark Shadows daytime series (which ran from 1966 to 1971) attracted 20 million viewers. The spooky, literate, romance and horror-driven show had universal appeal and came to be known as the program kids ran home from school to watch. Reruns and DVD releases of all 1,225 episodes have spawned new generations of Dark Shadows fans, who attend annual Dark Shadows Festivals where cast members reunite to celebrate the show’s unending popularity. During her tenure at the show, Kathryn Leigh Scott played several roles including Josette du Pres, the ghostly lover of Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid), who was killed at Widow’s Hill in the 18th-century flashbacks. After leaving the series, she co-starred in The Great Gatsby (1974), and...

Toronto — Jonathan Frid, a Canadian actor best known for playing Barnabas Collins in the 1960s original vampire soap opera "Dark Shadows", has died. He was 87.
Frid died Friday of natural causes in a hospital in his home town of Hamilton, Ontario, said Jim Pierson, a friend and spokesman for Dan Curtis Productions, the creator of "Dark Shadows."
Frid starred in the 1960s gothic-flavored soap opera about odd, supernatural goings-on at a family estate in Maine.
His death comes just weeks before a Tim Burton-directed version of Dark Shadows is due out next month starring Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins. Frid has a cameo role in the new movie in which he meets Depp's character in a party scene with two other original actors from the show.
Pierson said Burton and Depp were fans of Frid, who played a vulnerable vampire in one of the first sympathetic portrayal of the immortal creatures.

Jonathan Frid, star of the original Dark Shadows, has died He was 87. The Canadian actor, who passed away Friday in his hometown of Hamilton, Ontario, played benign vampire Barnabas Collins on ABC’s gothic soap opera from 1967-71 and in the 1970 movie House Of Dark Shadows. In the movie, which comes out May 11, he meets up with the younger version of himself played by Johnny Depp. Although Frid wasn’t in Dark Shadows when it first debuted in 1966, his elegantly fiendish Barnabas quickly became the star when he joined several months later. After the series ended, Frid returned to the theater, performing Edgar Allen Poe, William Shakespeare and a long run on Broadway in the 1980s in Arsenic And Old Lace. We have some very sad news to pass on to our readers today as reports are coming in that the great Jonathan Frid, aka Barnabas Collins from "Dark Shadows", has passed away at the age of 87 in Ontario, Canada.
Frid, who was born December 2nd, 1924, reportedly died of natural causes at Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, this past Friday, April 13th. In addition to his iconic portrayal of Barnabas on the soap that ran on ABC from June, 1966-April, 1971, the actor also starred in the 1973 television movie The Devil's Daughter and the 1974 horror film Seizure.
He filmed a cameo appearance - his final acting credit - in Tim Burton's forthcoming Dark Shadows film remake, which stars Johnny Depp as Barnabas.
"The death of Jonathan Frid has left all of us at Mpi deeply saddened," said Malik Ali, CEO of Mpi Media Group, home of the "Dark Shadows" series on DVD.

He made appearancs at fan conventions but after Dark Shadows went off the air in 1971, Jonathan Frid said goodbye to the cameras. He did star in Oliver Stone.s directorial debut Seizure in 1974 as a writer haunted by his demons (manifested by Martine Beswick and Herve Villachaize!) but reportedly Frid.s experience with Seizure was so unpleasant, he spent the rest of his career on the stage in Canada, his home. Jonathan Frid was of course the original Barnabas Collins on the ABC-tv soap Dark Shadows. He has a cameo appearance in the upcoming Johnny Depp/Tim Burton Dark Shadows feature film which opens in just over three weeks and I’m sure his legion of fans is looking forward to seeing him on the big screen. He posted at his website that he was hoping to attend the movie’s premiere and I’m sure he’ll be honored there.

Dark Shadows 2012 poster Tim Burton's Dark Shadows, a film version of the popular television series of the late '60s/early '70s opens on May 11. Please scroll down for the special-effects-laden, uncontrollably campy trailer. Now, are you old enough to remember Dark Shadows? No? Neither am I. All I can tell you is that Dark Shadows has nothing to do with The Munsters or The Addams Family — though don't feel bad if you get Burton's Dark Shadows reboot confused with either comedy series. Looking at the above poster, my first impression was: "Oh, Johnny Depp will be playing Morticia … in Dark Shadows? Something is off." The white-powdered faces also made me think of the Cullen Clan in the Twilight movies. I'm assuming that was intentional, so as to make clueless moviegoers think they'll be watching a sneak spring preview of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in Breaking Dawn Part 2. Or maybe not.

It always warms my heart to see distinguished actors in a horror film. Ghost Story, the 1981 film based on Peter Straub’s best-selling novel, has a prestigious cast of seasoned veterans like Fred Astaire, Douglas Fairbanks, John Houseman and Melvyn Douglas. The movie was panned by most fans and critics upon its release, but it has gained a huge following over the years. One of the highlights is the outstanding make-up effects from guru Dick Smith, and he will be present for a screening at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles on October 27 at 8:00 Pm.

Hey horror hounds! Courtesy of our friends at Entertainment Weekly here’s our first look at the cast of Tim Burton’s big screen version of the small screen classic, Dark Shadows. Now this is not the first time the Collins clan have made it to the movies. In 1970 MGM released House Of Dark Shadows based on the daytime drama and starring most of the TV cast. Night Of Dark Shadows followed.
Here’s a bit of background on the cult favorite. Dan Curtis (Burnt Offerings) created the “soap opera ” which debuted on ABC-tv in 1966. The main focus of the first episodes was the arrival of Victoria Winters in Collinsport, Me and her interactions with the secretive Collins family. The program languished at the bottom of the ratings until Curtis, in order to save the show from cancellation, decided to take a gamble and introduce a vampire into the Gothic series.

There are those of us reading this who still remember the sweet shocks of the made-for-tv 1970s horror movie. Usually spat out by ABC under its Movie of the Week moniker, they were less daring, less profane but occasionally brilliant exercises in compact genre mayhem.
