Harold Prince, the Broadway icon who produced or directed some of the 20th century’s most famous musicals West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, Damn Yankees, Cabaret, Evita and The Phantom of the Opera, died today in Reykjavik, Iceland, after a brief illness. He was 91.
If you’ve ever hummed — or belted out — a showtune from the past half-century, there’s a good chance “Hal” Prince was involved in the original production of its musical. Winner of 21 Tony Awards — the second-most of anyone after Roger S. Berlind — he also produced or directed such iconic Main Stem musicals as The Pajama Game, Candide, A Little Night Music, Show Boat, Company, Fiorello! and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
Eight shows he produced won the Tony for Best Musical — ranging from The Pajama Game (1955) to Candide (1974). He also won the Best Direction of a Musical for eight shows including Show Boat,...

Gwyneth Paltrow may have made a name for herself in Hollywood as an Oscar-winning actress with a bit of a rebellious streak, but over the past decade or so she has totally transformed, becoming both a mother of two and a go-to new age guru, promoting all things green, organic and zen. So naturally, when the Goop CEO sat down for her January cover of InStyle it was all about the latest in cleanses, healthy eating, perfecting her downward dog, and finding time for family and balance in the midst of her super busy, non-stop life.

As anyone who’s even given Goop a cursory scroll can tell you, Gwyneth Paltrow loves herself some complicated beauty procedures whether that comes in the form of a quick, refreshing vaginal steam or the slightly more complicated process of rounding up a bunch of bees for what sounds like a very painful facial. But for her friend Derek Blasberg’s new series for The Scene’s Derek Does Stuff with a Friend!, the actress experienced what life was like on the other side of that massage table, going undercover to play aesthetician for a few unsuspecting fans.

During N.W.A.'s brief existence, the group and its members made a career out of being underestimated. A quarter century later, the underdog rappers have been underestimated again, even by the studio releasing their victory-lap biopic.
Going into the weekend, Universal's predictions for "Straight Outta Compton" were modest, projecting a debut of about $25 to $30 million. Granted, studios routinely lowball such estimates so that everyone can be pleasantly surprised if the movie surpasses them, or at least not disappointed if it doesn't. But even the more optimistic industry insiders who predicted an opening weekend of $40 million turned out to be way off, since "Compton" actually opened with an estimated $56.1 million.
That's an impressive number for a release with no movie stars, in the depths of August, with a hard R-rating, a running time of two-and-a-half hours, and a theater count below 2,800 venues. ("The Man From Uncle" opened on nearly 900 more screens,...

What does the future (or perhaps, an alternate reality) hold for us? Well, if you live in London and have some free time over the next week and a half, then “science fiction movies” would be a pretty good bet.
Running from Friday 29th May – Sunday 7th June, the 14th annual Sci-Fi London Film Festival is back and bigger than ever, bringing rabid fans of speculative fiction, incisive cultural metaphor and kickass killer robots everything they could need. The festival will be playing underground classics like the punk Terminator take-off Hardware (pictured below) and fresh-off-the-motherboard flicks like found footage thriller Man Vs. and the long-awaited (un)making-of documentary The Death of ‘Superman Lives’: What Happened?, both of which will be making their UK premieres (the latter will be opening the film and is already sold out – sorry!).

Well, it’s been a while since I’ve been snarky. And I use that italicized denotation to declare to you that my right eyebrow is fully engaged and riding high, whilst its partner is floating low. There is a smirk across my mouth that clearly tells you that I’m excited. These are the announcements Internet op-ed folk dream of reading – and then immediately speculate, rant, and blather about.

In the illustrious history of WrestleMania, there have been 293 matches (not counting dark and pre-show matches) that have taken place over 30 events.
Some have been great, while others less so. Some have been long, while others have been short. Some have been technical classics, while others have been aerial showcases. There have been singles matches, tag matches, six-man tag matches, and just about any combination of multi-person matches you can think of. Something for everyone has taken place on “the grandest stage of them all”, and that is why the event has become such a major spectacle today.
One thing that WrestleMania is good to deliver on is violence. As the biggest event of the year, wrestlers go all out to put on the best show they possibly can, and if that means working extra stiff or taking a bigger bump than usual, so be it.

There was a lot of good TV in 2013. So much, perhaps, that a few things slipped through the cracks. Now that holiday breaks are here, though, it's the perfect opportunity to catch up on some of the best shows of the year — there's nothing new currently airing, and many of us have some unclaimed down time that's just crying out to be spent with a lovable television companion. Something for everyone this weekend. While most moviegoers will flock to the new "Hunger Games" film, which looks to break box office records around the world, Oscar hopeful "Philomena" arrives in select cities after its festival sweep, and new Vince Vaughn vehicle "Delivery Man" gets a wide release. Doc lovers, head to "Narco Cultura" if not "Is the Man Who Is Tall Happy?" Trailers after the jump. "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" is as terrific as everybody says it is. It took at least three great writers to massage Suzanne Collins' second novel in her bestselling "Hunger Games" trilogy into a taut, thrilling movie balanced between reluctant symbol Katniss Everdeen's pure mission to protect her family by surviving and her conflicted feelings for her two loving swains, Gale (Liam Hemsworth) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson). Jennifer Lawrence carries this movie on her shoulders with nary a wrong move--athletic but feminine,...

The box sets of three American TV dramas are great for those of us who crave bawdy fun, while Blinkbox threatens to upstage Netflix
I've never cared for the term "guilty pleasure", which ascribes an odd moral burden to honest fun, but it's how most would describe three gleefully salacious Us television dramas, all with new box sets out tomorrow, and all ones I've devoured while sensing that I'm supposed to be cracking on with Breaking Bad.
Revenge (Disney, 15) may be the least fashionable good series on TV right now. Pacing primly at the corner of Dynasty and Desperate Housewives, it's a knowingly ludicrous Hamptons-set mystery swaddled in bales of white linen – all the better to show up the blood. The second season finds knife-lipped Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp) continuing in her quest to bring down the billionaire family that in turn brought down her late father. (For baffled newcomers,...

Summer is heavy with blockbusters, but the hottest season of the year isn't reserved just for big-budget action, sci-fi, and superhero movies. Some of us like alternative (or supplemental) programming, and, fortunately, there are lots of small films with huge appeal catering to our hunger for indie goodness. Among the little gems you'll find from May through August is a new film from the director of “The Avengers” (the biggest movie of 2012) and debut features from filmmakers who'll be big names in the years to come. You'll also see some familiar faces in these movies, which star actors from the “Harry Potter,” “Iron Man,” “X-Men,” “Twilight,” and “Amazing Spider-Man” franchises. See? Something for everyone. Below, check out Moviefone's round-up of indie films we're betting money on (and into, with our date-night dollars) this summer.

Every year CinemaCon rolls out the $100 Million Reel; it's a tradition to remind the exhibitors of the movies that scored in their theaters. "Something for everyone" is the theme that rang out Tuesday. The 2012 boom, said Nato chief John Fithian and others, was about delivering a diversity of high quality product. Disney, for one, had four films on the $100-million list: animated Oscar-winner "Brave," "Wreck-It-Ralph," Spielberg's "Lincoln," and Marvel's top-ranked blockbuster of the year, MTV Movie Winner "The Avengers." It was the third highest performer ever globally and domestically, and the fourth-biggest overseas, opening at a record $207 million, and the fastest film to reach $300 million in nine days. Last year three movies, "The Avengers," "The Dark Knight Rises" and "The Hunger Games," broke the $400-million barrier domestically. 2012 marked the all time domestic record, $10.8 billion, over the previous high of $10.6 in 2009, an increase in ticket sales. And 1.36...

Sometimes, two ladies make out with each other in major motion pictures. Other times, they not only make out with each other — they simulate sexual intercourse with each other. And because the Internet exists, each of those instances is easily accessible to everybody with a computer, context-free. I know, right? And some people claim to be "pessimists?" (laughs to himself.)

Christmas is a time for giving, and with the festive period now upon us, and that all-important date now on the horizon, the race is on to find that perfect present for those special people in our lives. With a seemingly ever-increasing range of options to choose from, I thought it would be a nice idea to try to put together a little Christmas Gift Guide, to help finding those presents that little bit easier.
A lot of the time, buying someone a film or film-related gift can be difficult if your tastes run a little different, so hopefully this guide will help in giving some inspiration for anyone struggling to come up with ideas. I’ve tried to cater to various budgets, and there should be something for everyone amongst these pages.

Tonight, there's not a single better examination of the year in pop culture—not the year in music or the year in video, even, but the most accurate and glitzy representation of who's scalding hot right literally this second—than the MTV Video Music Awards, a pop culture event who might be very lastly known for its, um, awards. Think fast: what was last year's Video of the Year winner? Yeah, we don't remember either.
But how could we, and why would we bother on a show where Justin Bieber is gliding across the stage and Pink and Chris Brown are flying on wires and Jay and 'Ye are performing amidst a pyro's wet dream and Madonna and Britney are making out and is that Beyoncé and is she pregnant? Not to mention the dark side of the VMAs, the one where frustrated rappers interrupt the coy speeches of a lanky-legged first-time winning country girl,...

Now that the broadcast networks have set their prime-time schedules for the 2012-13 season, it's time to start strategizing what we'll be watching when the season kicks off in September. And in a few cases, it won't be easy.
It seems to happen just about every season: There are a handful of hours of primetime that will tax even the most high-capacity DVRs. We've already discussed the "Revenge"-"Good Wife" conundrum; here are four other time periods that could get crowded in the fall. All times are Eastern/Pacific.
Mondays at 10: Time for a 'Revolution'?
ABC and CBS are holding fast to their 10 p.m. Monday dramas, and with good reason: "Castle" and "Hawaii Five-0" both average in the 12 million-viewer range and rank among the Top 50 shows among adults 18-49. But while they're both solid, neither one is so dominant that NBC's new drama "Revolution" can't carve out a place for itself.

London Short Film Festival
The new year's festival season starts here, and so does the revolution. Short film is often regarded as a stepping stone to features, and there's plenty of that potential here, even a few big names (Michael Fassbender in Goldfish). But it's also a potentially radical art form in itself, and an admirably inclusive one. So here you'll find documentaries selected by Occupy London; showcases of queer cinema; black and Asian stories; feminist porn; found film; experimental shorts; special guests; parties; a film from Jake and Dinos Chapman (The Organ Grinder's Monkey, with Rhys Ifans); and a music doc with a live improvised score on homemade instruments. Something for everyone, then. There's even an evening of films about sad, lonely men (including Mark Gatiss, Matthew Holness and Roger Allam).
Various venues, to 15 Jan

On Saturday, Alamo Kids Club is playing Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas on Saturday. It's free, but first come first seated so get there early.
Tuesday night is the night of Something For Everyone Who Likes Watching Movies. Austin Public Library's Polish Film Series is showing Borys Lankosz' The Reverse (Rewers) at the Howson Branch, and over at Twin Oaks Branch you can see Kung Fu Panda 2 (why yes that is a 2011 title). You can find out more about these films on the Apl website. Austin Film Society members (and those who are lucky enough to get tickets for the remaining seats) can see Two for the Road starring Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney.
Movies We've Seen:
Project Nim -- Afs Selects returns with an encore limited engagement of James Marsh's Oscar-shortlisted documentary about a chimpanzee raised as a human. I found the occasional re-enactments melodramatic and diminishing.

The 2011 Portfolio Video. Alex “hatinhand“‘s The 2011 Portfolio video showcases Drive, Warrior, Shame and other movies from 2011 in a tribute video featuring clips and music from them. Most of these films I have not even seen yet (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and some I will never see (Footloose).
The video is broken up into six chapters (there are two chapter 2s), each one has its own music track.
From Hatinhand about The 2011 Portfolio:
The 2011 slate of releases, from The Adjustment Bureau to Zookeeper.
This is where a cathartic and overarching statement would succinctly sum up the year’s displays of creativity, passion, ingenuity, and bravado, but the only thing that comes to mind is: weird shit. Lots of weird shit.
War horses and evil clowns. Hobos with shotguns and super-powered Nazi hunters. Cancer comedies and a silent warrior in a scorpion jacket. Iconoclasts, conspirators, madmen, and crusaders. And a badass David Tennant.

This is such great news! We’re always happy to learn of new scripted projects at Syfy, and now there are three in progress. Not only that, but it looks like they’re each from a different family of sci-fi: future/space, supernatural, and comics/spy-fi. Something for everyone, and all for us! Here’s what Syfy had to say about them:
Syfy Announces New Scripted Projects From Universal Cable Productions, Fox Television Studios And CBS TV Studios
New York – November 9, 2011 – Marking another phase of its record expansion of original programming, Syfy today announced three new scripted projects in development from Universal Cable Productions, CBS TV Studios and Fox Television Studios.
In making the announcement, Mark Stern, President, Original Content, Syfy, and Co-Head, Original Content, Universal Cable Productions, said: “This broad-based slate, from top-notch talent in the creative community, will enable us to build upon the strong foundation of our...

"I'm really glad that I'm on this show because it is continuously surprising," Gillian Jacobs says, marveling her career's good fortune. "It's definitely a bonus feature to me, I'm not wearing a suit and reciting legal jargon every week; that, I wouldn't be excited about."
She better not give anyone any ideas; on NBC's "Community," anything is possible.
Greendale College, the setting of the cult hit comedy, is the land of possibilities, brimming with smart pop culture references, uniquely warm characters and irreverent adventures through genre and form. Just a few examples from last season include an episode modeled after a zombie attack film, with a school cafeteria serving as the breeding ground; an entire episode that revolved around an intense game of Dungeons and Dragons; and a claymation Christmas cartoon that saw its characters share form with Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer.

Something for everyone as love stories, psychological chillers, political thrillers, comedies and more join the festival's line-up. The Toronto International Film Festival has announced another huge batch of titles for Tiff 2011 this year, putting their total well over 100. While there was plenty in the original line-ups announced, there's even more in these selections of films that I'm very excited to see this year, including Nacho Vigalondo's new sci-fi film Extraterrestrial, which we've teased before (though I'm surprised it's not a Midnight Madness film). You can check out a full list of the latest Tiff films announced just below. For more information and a closer look at the schedule and line-up, visit the official Tiff website: tiff.net New Galas: Page Eight (Closing Night Film) (dir. Not since the fall TV onslaught has there been a weekend this cluttered with high-profile new premieres, including network and cable (though mostly cable), running the gamut from lavish costume drama to spy spoof to haunting mystery. Before you go out and blow all your hard-earned cash on whiskey and movie tickets this weekend, may I suggest something to cover that luscious body of yours? Over at Ript, their very cool Daily T-Shirt offering is something that will appeal to just about every film lover in America (Canada, you can get in on this, too). Their “One Nation Under Cinema” tee uses movie titles in place of the state the film is primarily set in - neatly fitting the movie title to the shape of its correct state. Florida – you get Scarface, Nevada – go to the Casino, Minnesota – feel that Purple Rain. There’s really not a miss on here. See? Something for everyone. Even people who live in one of those Dakota states get some cool picks.

The return of Tron to the big screen wins the weekend box office, leaving Yogi Bear and a host of other releases in its wake...
Between new releases and expanding releases, there were five movies grabbing for a little extra box office noteworthiness this weekend. The biggest of these big deals was, of course, Tron: Legacy. After all, it's a sequel 27 years in the making, featuring some of the best special effects the wizards of Hollywood can come up with, starring one of the best actors of his generation. Then, there are the other movies which have crept out this weekend, from an animated talking bear to dueling ballerinas and a hard-luck tale of a working-class fighter and his troublesome family. Something for everyone? Something for everyone.

This week we’re going from hardcore action, intense horror to down right cheesy galore. Something for everyone, you could say! Staring off this week’s selection is:
Robin Hood (dir. Ridley Scott, 2010) – This tale of the story before Robin Hood became the thief everybody loves is an alternative look at the character we seem to have witnessed so much about. Showing us how he came to be the person he is in the tale we know now, the story seems weak and almost an excuse to have a period action film starring Russell Crowe as an aggressive lead. He himself is the only redeeming factor, but if you love fights and gore, this will be right up your street. This ain’t your Disney tale…
Speaking of Disney, our next big release is:
Camp Rock 2 (dir. Paul Hoen, 2010) – Yes, you read that right… There’s a 2nd one. Starring...

Kinsey Lowe misses the easy-access movie theaters of his cinephile youth. Now that many are gone, he's in search of their replacements, if any. When I was a student at the University of Missouri at Columbia in the early '70s, five theaters were situated within walking distance of campus. Now there are none. But non-profit micro-cinemas are taking their place. My first week on campus, I was able to walk to the MPAA X-rated Midnight Cowboy, which was selling out at the Uptown. Another nearby venue was an "arthouse" (rechristened the Film Arts Theatre from a previous incarnation as the vaudeville-era Varsity), dedicated to foreign-language films and quirkier British and other off-the-wall movies such as Something for Everyone and The King of Hearts. That's where I ...

The pressure is on this weekend for M. Night Shyamalan and the cast of The Last Airbender not just because they're hoping the film is a financial success, but because they're eager to please the longtime fans of the show, hope to attract crowds unfamiliar with the source material, have become engrossed in their characters and are hoping to make two more films. Factor in the $150 million production budget and the $130 million spent on marketing and a little anxiety at this point is understandable, so it's a good thing Shyamalan and his stars, Dev Patel, Nicola Peltz and Jackson Rathbone are in particularly high spirits.
All four participated in a series of roundtables during which the gang was eager to fawn over the subject matter, each other and the final product. The film was adapted from the popular Nickelodeon animated series and focuses on a young boy named Aang (Noah Ringer...

"In six months I went from hosting 'The Tonight Show' to performing at a refugee camp," Conan O'Brien joked to the sweaty hordes gathered in the comedy tent for the once-and-future late night host's 90-minute set at this past weekend's Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee. As O'Brien laid the groundwork for his new show with his Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour in preparation for his return to TV this November on TBS, the rest of the late night world has been mostly in cruise control, owing mostly to the fact that it's the summer and people like to take a break. But there also may be a bit of burn out from the constant fireworks during the early part of 2010, when late night hosts were all taking jabs at each other in the spirit of competition. Since then, it has been relatively low-key.

Cool news from the cool people over at Fangoria: this summer they will be distributing eight horror films in a multi-platform program with the label "FrightFest". Through partnering with Lightning Media these films will be made available on DVD, Video-On-Demand and Digital Download.
Even more cool: on the FrightFest website readers can vote which of these films should get a theatrical release in July. Right now the site just shows the selected titles but trailers, clips and featurettes should follow soon.
And the titles are not to be sneezed at: James Isaac's "Pig Hunt", Jaume Balagueró's "Fragile", Steven Hentges' "Hunger", Dean Francis' "Road Train", Darin Scott's "Dark House", Martin Weisz' "Grimm Love", Elio Quiroga's "No-Do: The Beckoning", and finally Michael Staininger's "Ligeia".
