- Columbo arrives at a kidnapping case, which at some point turns to worse. Everything seems to be related to a trust fund managed by a man with a great love for orchids.
- A horticulturist and his nephew take part in a fake kidnapping scheme so the nephew can break into his trust fund in order to win back his cheating wife. But once the money is accessed, the horticulturist decides he wants all the trust money for himself so to make a legitimate claim, he kills his nephew.
- Tony Goodland"s wife Kathy is having an affair with another man, and Tony is desperate to win her back. Along with his Uncle Jarvis, Tony stages his own kidnapping in hopes of retrieving a large amount of money from his trust fund, so he can continue to fund Kathy's lucrative lifestyle. But unbeknownst to Tony, his Uncle Jarvis (who is never really liked him or Kathy) has his own ideas about the money, murders Tony in cold blood and attempts to frame Kathy for the crime. Colombo is suspicious of Uncle Jarvis, and continues to investigate trying to prove that he is involved with the kidnapping scheme and Tony's murder.—charmardee-smith

He believes money will bring her back to him, but while he leads a comfortable life, most of his massive inheritance is in a trust fund that can only be accessed in extraordinary circumstances. Tony's uncle Jarvis, an expert in orchids, proposes a plan: he will help Tony fake his own kidnapping, which will allow Tony to gain a good portion of his trust fund unsuspected. What Tony doesn't realize is that Jarvis wants that money for himself and is willing to kill to get it.
