Considered to be one of the biggest misfires of all time, Lucille Ball stars as the eccentric Auntie Mame in this film version of the 1966 Broadway musical that starred Angela Lansbury. For the life of me, I cannot imagine why Ms. Lansbury was not asked to repeat her incredible Broadway performance. I'm sure it would have worked better than the choice that was made. Comedy legend Ball is too old and too off key to carry Jerry Herman's score. The songs are pulled back to equal Lucy's minimal singing abilities. Kirby Furlong, as Patrick is way off here. He makes Patrick a baby. It's only Robert Preston and Bea Arthur, in a reprise of her Tony Award winning role that add any life to this lackluster adaptation.
