Legendary B-movie king Roger Corman, who directed and produced hundreds of low-budget films and discovered such future industry stars as Jack Nicholson, Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro, has died. He was 98.
Corman died May 9 at his home in Santa Monica, Calif., surrounded by family members, the family confirmed to Variety.
“His films were revolutionary and iconoclastic, and captured the spirit of an age. When asked how he would like to be remembered, he said, ‘I was a filmmaker, just that,’ ” the family said in a statement.
Corman’s empire, which existed in several incarnations, including New World Pictures, and Concorde/New Horizons, was as active as any major studio and, he boasted, always profitable. He specialized in fast-paced, low-budget genre movies — horror, action, science fiction, even some family fare — and his company became a work-in-training ground for a wide variety of major talents, from actors like Nicholson (“Little Shop of Horrors...

Realizing they needed a voice over actor to provide the narration for a new show in development called Arrested Development, producer Ron Howard looked around the empty recording studio, finding no voice over actor in sight. So this Oscar winning former child star stepped in to provide a temporary voice track, you know just as a filler until they could find a better voice, of course. But a better voice never came because Ron Howard’s comforting and gentle tone mixed with a dry yet kinda goofy speech pattern was the perfect fit for the sense of humor of this show. But this was not the only time Ron Howard stepped up and became an unexpected perfect fit, he’s been doing that all his life – from being in front of the camera in classic TV shows and behind the camera for a hefty handful of wonderful motion pictures… and more!

Blake Mills, the L.A. guitarist and singer-songwriter who’s worked with A-list artists from John Legend to Ed Sheeran, recently booked his latest high-profile gig. Amazon is putting together a new Reese Witherspoon–produced miniseries called Daisy Jones & the Six, based on the 2019 novel about the rise of a fictional L.A. Seventies rock group, and Mills was asked to bring that band to life.
“Create a band, conjure up their sound, what they’re writing about, and how they play,” is how Mills describes the job.

Actor and director Ron Howard is best known for critically acclaimed movies such as “American Graffiti,” “A Beautiful Mind,” and “Apollo 13,” but “Baby Driver” director Edgar Wright has reminded us that the “Splash” filmmaker also has roots in the automobile action genre.
After Howard congratulated Wright for his “original and excellent” car film on its one-year anniversary in a tweet on Friday, Wright responded with a throwback to one of the earliest films of Howard’s career: a little-known action comedy from 1976 called “Eat My Dust!”
In the film, Howard played the son of a local sheriff who steals a racing car with his girlfriend and then faces a pursuit from his father and the car’s owner and professional racer. According to PopMatters, Howard’s role in the movie was the result of a deal with director Roger Corman: If Howard acted in “Eat My Dust!,” Corman...

Sad news out of Hollywood today to read that actor Bill Paxton passed away yesterday at the age of 61. He passed away after complications from heart surgery. A representative for his family released a statement asking for privacy and saying, “Bill’s passion for the arts was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth and tireless energy were undeniable.” Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Paxton went to Hollywood when he was 18, and found work as a set dresser for Roger Corman’s New World Pictures, working on films like “Big Bad Mama” and “Eat My Dust.” His first acting role was a small part in Jonathan Demme’s “Crazy Mama” for Corman. Paxton then studied acting in New York under Stella Adler,...

Youth On The MARCHThere are 48 individual films screening in the Wavelengths section of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. The relative importance of this section, amidst the vast array of offerings in this relatively huge festival, depends on your taste in movies, of course, to say nothing of your specific objectives. If you’re coming to Toronto to try to score a hot tip in this year’s Oscar race, well . . . I feel sorry for you on a number of levels. But Wavelengths is unlikely to be your jam. Originally conceived exclusively as a showcase for experimental and non-narrative films (hence the section’s title, a direct tribute to avant-garde master and Toronto native son Michael Snow), Wavelengths now encompasses the edgier, less commercial side of art cinema. This is the first of two preview essays, and my aim is to cover everything in the section. These are the...

If you’ve relished the Mad Max series, your heart will leap in Mad Max: Fury Road the first time a “War Rig” made of leftover car and truck frames (human skulls affixed to the grille) or a turbo-charged, weaponized jeep swerves into the foreground and then suddenly roars off into the distance at a 45-degree angle while the camera continues on its scorching horizontal track. It’s a signature move by director George Miller, who gets scary-close (he’s fucking with us) and then says, “Eat my dust.”That dust tastes damn good. The majority of sequels have no reason for being apart from sequel money, but watching this fourth Mad Max, I could sense after roughly .0001 seconds that the 70-year-old Aussie director has been revving his engines for a long, long time, itching to get back to the blacktop and deliver even wilder automotive mayhem. After all, his last two films,...

Ron Howard is an articulate film director. So it should come as no surprise that he is also an articulate speaker. He also has a way with anecdotes, as one might expect, given the length and diversity of his career.
"I think it's wrong to think of what I'm in as the movie business," Howard says. "It's the moving image business. I think it's necessary to work in all different mediums." He also says it's hard...

"Crab Monsters, Teenage Cavemen, And Candy Stripe Nurses: Roger Corman, King Of The 'B' Movie" By Chris Nashawatay; Foreword By John Landis
Review by Lee Pfeiffer
You can fill an ocean liner with all the tribute books that have been written about "B" movie mogul Roger Corman. The most elaborate so far is this superb coffee table volume by Chris Nashawatay, a long-time film critic for Entertainment Weekly. The book presents a plethora of outstanding movie posters, lobby cards and behind the scenes stills, some of which are from Corman's personal archives. They are all wonderfully presented, as this book is particularly well-designed to capitalize on the nature of the films it celebrates. So many big stars and directors had their initial success with Corman productions. In these pages you can relish Jack Nicholson as Cry Baby Killer, Ron Howard starring in (and directing for the first time) Eat My Dust,...

Vroom! Vroom! Time to strap ourselves in and wait for the green light. The multiplex becomes the big racetrack for this weekend’s new formula one, based on true events thrill ride, Rush. Of all the different pro sports, auto racing lags considerably behind the team competitions like baseball and football. as a movie setting. The 1960′s and early 70′s may have been its most popular decades with several big films anchored by big movie stars who were also big motor sports fans: James Garner in Grand Prix, Paul Newman in Winning, and Steve McQueen in Le Mans. A couple of big box office draws have indulged their need for speed more recently: Sly Stallone in Driven, Tom Cruise in Days Of Thunder, and a parody with Will Ferrell in Talledaga Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby along with the Cars films from the Pixar gang. The director of Rush,...

If you haven't already, check out Roger Corman's new subscription YouTube channel, "Corman's Drive-In," which launched on June 13. For this first month's offerings, Corman and his wife, producer Julie Corman, have handpicked 30 films from their vault of 400 titles. Included are Jack Nicholson's screen debut in 1958, intriguingly titled "The Crybaby Killer," and 1960's "The Little Shop of Horrors," also starring Nicholson. Watch the channel's trailer below. Also part of the June lineup are Joe Dante's "Piranha," 1976's "Eat My Dust," starring Ron Howard, and 1971's "The Big Dollhouse," starring Pam Grier. "Corman's Take" is another feature on the channel, with Corman telling behind-the-scenes stories about the selected films. The channel is $3.99 per month, with a 14-day free trial. Corman, a legend of low-budget filmmaking, is perhaps best known for his Edgar Allen Poe cycle of films released between 1959 and 1964 (including "The Pit and the Pendulum," "The Raven" and "The Masque.

Here’s a new film that’s essentially a nostalgic trip down ‘ grindhouse’ lane. Or perhaps it’s more like a gravel-churning trek to the old drive-in. The “passion pit” was the showcase for the muscle car action-chase flick genre that may have begun with the success of Robert Mitchum’s moonshine-runner epic Thunder Road. This spawned countless imitators over the last few decades with Dirty Mary/ Crazy Larry, the original Gone In 60 Seconds and Ron Howard’s one-two punch of Eat My Dust ( with the immortal ad line ” Ronny Howard pops the clutch and tells Smokey to eat my dust” ) and Ron’s feature directing debut Grand Theft Auto. The genre hit its zenith in 1977 with the monster box office smash, Hal Needham’s Smokey And The Bandit ( and its two sequels ). Well, now comic actor Dax Shepard ( TV’s Parenthood ) has decided to put his own spin ( ouch!

I was recently afforded the opportunity to talk to Alex Stapleton, the director of the wonderful documentary Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel (review here) about the many sides of the “schlock king” Roger Corman. Through a tenuous phone connection (I do have an At&T iPhone and live in New York City, after all), we discussed the process of making this film, how she got roped into doing crew on a Corman movie, Jack Nicholson‘s lounging gear, and doing interviews from the barber’s chair. The Film Stage’s questions are in bold, Alex’s responses follow.

The release of Cars 2 this weekend is just starting the engines of Hollywood's fast track to a bevy of race car themed movies speeding along in development.
Ron Howard is in talks to direct Rush, which has Oscar-winning scribe Peter Morgan writing the biopic about Austrian Formula 1 champ Niki Lauda who was still recoving from severe burns on his face six weeks after a fiery crash when he took on his rival James Hunt. Steven Spielberg has been looking into filming a biopic about Hunt.
Howard's Imagine is also behind the remake of Roger Corman's 1976 Eat My Dust about a teen who steals a race car to impress a girl. Michael Mann is planning to direct Go Like Hell about the battle between Ferrari and Ford once an American car won the Le Mans. Oh, and this week's announcement that Hot Wheels was going to make a Fast and Furious type movie.

Durham, N.C. - During lunch a filmmaker tells me that of all the festivals he’s attended with his movies, the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival is the only one he wants to attend as a spectator. He enjoys how the various screens and activities aren’t spread all over the city. There’s a relaxed atmosphere as the festival-goers aren’t hustling hard to get tickets to sold out screenings. I hear you, pappy. But I can’t quite reach you.
When you hear the name Ron Howard, I would assume most would think either Opie, Richie Cunningham or one of the top directors in Hollywood today. But if one was to say action star, badass or driver extraordinaire, most would either scoff or think I was a bit nutty. But at one time, Ron Howard was making a splash on the big screen, behind the wheels of a race car in one film (Eat My Dust) and his future father-in-law’s Rolls Royce in the other (Grand Theft Auto). Both films are car centric, with a constant car chase going on throughout the running time of the film. Something the Fast and the Furious films wouldn’t dare today because of attention spans going the way of the Dodo, which is why I’ve held these films in such...
When you hear the name Ron Howard, I would assume most would think either Opie, Richie Cunningham or one of the top directors in Hollywood today. Durham, Nc - The hard truth of cinema takes place at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in Durham, Nc from April 14-17. That’s four solid days of movies that don’t feature Natalie Portman’s face being digitally inserted on other bodies. Four days of real people doing real stuff. And you can get some great BBQ.
This years line up has enough goodness to make me have to make painful choices as what to watch. There’s only one screening unless a movie wins a major prize. It’s be there or miss out. Choice wisely. Here’s a few of the films I’m looking to catch:
The Hangman (Thursday 10:20 a.m.) appears to be a creepy classic as it probes the man who executed Nazi Adolph Eichmann. What’s he do now? He ritually slaughters animals. Windfall (Thurs 4:20 p.m.) takes us to Meredith,...

Since the earliest days of American cinema there has been a shadowy counterpart to the commercial mainstream: exploitation movies — pictures whose appeal lies in their sensational treatment and leering promotion of often lurid and prurient material. Pre-1960, when mainstream Hollywood worked within severe restrictions on content, exploitation movies offered audiences titillating glimpses of the deliciously taboo, usually under the guise of being some sort of instructional cautionary against the very subject matter being exploited i.e. sex in “hygiene” movies like The Road to Ruin (1934), drugs in anti-drug movies like Tell Your Children (1936, re-released in the 1960s/70s as camp classic Reefer Madness), and gambling in the anti-vice Gambling with Souls (1936).
By the 1950s, as the studios entered their long post-war decline, downscale producers launched a new vein of exploitation moviemaking, churning out low-budget thrillers (mostly sci fi and horror) aimed squarely at the burgeoning youth audience. Again, the movies were cheap,...

Exclusive: It's almost like the Sundance Film Festival has started, with all the advance acquisition activity. A&E IndieFilm just acquired TV rights to Corman's World: Exploits Of A Hollywood Rebel, the documentary about low-budget independent icon Roger Corman. A&E becomes an investor in a film that will still be shopped for feature rights, much the way that A&E was a ground floor participant in The Tillman Story, the documentary acquired for theatrical release by The Weinstein Company after its Sundance premiere. Corman will be on hand for Friday night's world premiere in Park City. Directed by Alex Stapleton, Corman's World focuses on Corman's prolific film output, and also careers that launched in his low-budget factory that include James Cameron, Jack Nicholson, Ron Howard, Francis Coppola, Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, Jonathan Demme and Martin Scorsese. Many of them tell their stories in the documentary. Howard once told me...

He gave life to teenage cavemen and candy-stripe nurses. Crab monsters and humanoids from the deep. T-bird gangs and towns that dreaded sundown. His name is Roger Corman. And on Nov. 14, he will receive an honor that no one would have predicted: an honorary Academy Award. The 83-year-old B-movie titan has made nearly 400 films as a director and producer. From the start, Corman was a magnet for hungry young actors, writers, and directors who would work for slave wages for the chance to make their first film. They called it the "University of Corman," and the alumni include Francis Ford Coppola,...

Production has begun on King Of The B’S: The Independent Life Of Roger Corman, a feature-length documentary about Corman’s life, career and remarkable influence on modern moviemaking. King Of The B’S tracks back to the days when Corman was king, featuring archival footage of American youth culture and counterculture from the 1950s to today, celebrity interviews and vérité footage following the present-day Corman as he continues to produce and distribute films outside the studio system.
The trendsetter’s résumé boasts everything from directorial efforts like Attack Of The Crab Monsters to the Oscar-winning The Tin Drum, which his company, New World Pictures, distributed. Corman’s remarkable 1960s Poe films (House Of Usher, Pit And The Pendulum, Masque Of The Red Death, etc.) for the fledgling American International Pictures put that company on the map. As Fango fans know, maverick Corman’s impressive output of low-budget exploitation films throughout the ’50s,...
