Nearly a year has gone by since we learned that Elizabeth Hurley (Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery) had signed on to star in Piper, a new horror film from director Anthony Waller. Now The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that the movie is set to have its world premiere at FrightFest this Sunday, August 27th – and ahead of the premiere, a trailer for Piper has arrived online! You can check it out in the embed above.
Back in 1995, director Waller made an impressive breakthrough with the thriller Mute Witness… then quickly squandered the good will he had earned with that movie by following it up with An American Werewolf in Paris. Waller has made a couple movies since the Paris debacle – the 2000 Bill Pullman thriller The Guilty, the 2009 sci-fi horror film 9 Miles Down – and here’s hoping that Piper will earn him some positive attention again.

The Gold Derby predictions center event for the 2022 Emmys is now open. We’ve got hundreds of potential candidates available for you to pick in 16 categories for the drama, comedy and limited series/movie genres. More will be added when the Television Academy releases this year’s ballots in June.
Let’s first take a look at the drama categories to help you sort out what is available to predict:
Of last year’s nominees for Best Drama Series, winner “The Crown” will not be back in time for this year’s awards. That is the same fate for “The Boys,” “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “The Mandalorian.” Both “Lovecraft Country” and “Pose” ended their runs and will not be back, only leaving “Bridgerton” and “This Is Us” on the 2022 ballot.
This situation also affects many of the drama acting categories, with “The Crown” champs Olivia Colman, Josh O’Connor, Gillian Anderson...

Bill Nighy (Love Actually) has been tapped to star opposite Chiwetel Ejiofor and Naomie Harris in Showtime’s The Man Who Fell To Earth drama series, based on the Walter Tevis novel and the cult classic 1976 film starring David Bowie. Nighy will take over the role played by Bowie in the film.
Showtime’s The Man Who Fell To Earth, which comes from Alex Kurtzman, Jenny Lumet and John Hlavin, will follow a new alien character (Ejiofor) who arrives on Earth at a turning point in human evolution and must confront his own past to determine our future.
Nighy will play the brilliant Thomas Newton, the first alien to arrive on earth over 40 years ago. Alone and desperate, Newton summons Faraday (Ejiofor) to complete his original mission. But Newton’s time marooned among human beings has cost him everything, possibly even his sanity.

Twice thwarted by the Covid-19 pandemic, the SXSW Film Festival is making a major return to form this year — featuring premium studio projects from Sandra Bullock and Pete Davidson, notable indies and docs, and a closing night premiere from the new season of Donald Glover’s “Atlanta.”
In 2020, the Austin-based conference was the first major event to fall to the rapidly-escalating first wave of coronavirus, and was similarly forced to go virtual in 2021 thanks to the delta variant. Now preparing for an in-person program beginning on March 11, Hollywood and indie hopefuls are coming out in force.
Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum’s “The Lost City,” Pete Davidson and Amandla Stenberg’s secret A24 slasher film “Bodies, Bodies, Bodies,” Richard Linklater and Jack Black’s coming-of-age story “Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood” and Nicolas Cage’s “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” will all populate the headliners section. After being online the past two years because of Covid, SXSW’s film festival returns with a vibrant in-person edition for its 29th edition, which will run March 11-20, 2022. The lineup revealed Wednesday includes the types of rollercoaster, Hollywood event films for which the Austin-based fest is so good at building buzz.
For anyone jonesing to get their film festival fix in the wake of Sundance’s in-person cancellation, there’s plenty to see at SXSW this spring — and this city couldn’t be more thankful, as the event during pre-pandemic times counts an attendance of 280,000 with a reported $355.9 million positive impact to the local economy.
This is the festival that shot A Quiet Place, Ready Player One and Us out of a cannon to the world, and this year sitting on top of SXSW’s 99 features (of which 76 are world premieres) include Paramount’s Sandra Bullock-Brad Pitt...

Paramount+ released the first full trailer for their long-in-the-works adaptation of the video game “Halo” during Sunday’s broadcast of the NFL’s AFC Championship Game on CBS.
The series will debut on March 24. You can watch the trailer in the video above.
According to Paramount+, the series “will take place in the universe that first came to be in 2001, dramatizing an epic 26th-century conflict between humanity and an alien threat known as the Covenant. ‘Halo’ will weave deeply drawn personal stories with action, adventure and a richly imagined vision of the future.”
“Halo” was ordered to series at Showtime in 2018 but was eventually rerouted to Paramount+ in somewhat of a trade for “The Man Who Fell to Earth.”
Along with Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief Spartan John-117, “Halo” stars Natascha McElhone as Dr. Halsey, the creator of the Spartan super soldiers, and Jen Taylor as Cortana, the most advanced AI in human history.

“In the ten years we’ve worked together, day in and day out, Aaron has proven himself to be a problem solver and diplomat who has the rare gift of excellent taste across many genres,” said Kurtzman. “He fights for the needs of our creative teams while maintaining strong relationships at the executive level, and he’s played a key role in managing multiple, simultaneous productions both before and during the pandemic with unwavering steadiness and empathy. It’s been a pleasure watching him grow into the leader he was always meant to be, and I’m excited to dig deep with him as we expand our slate and company into the future.

Exclusive: Heather Kadin is going out on her own. After 12 years of running a TV production company, Alex Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout and its predecessor, Kurtzman and Bob Orci’s K/O Paper Products, as President of Television, Kadin is leaving to pursue other opportunities. Her exit is still being finalized, and it is unclear yet whether Kadin would continue as an executive producer on Secret Hideout’s projects in development, which she has shepherded.
“Heather and I have spent 12 extraordinary years together, and in that time she’s been a brilliant creative force whose passion and dedication have been felt by the many writers and directors we work with at Secret Hideout,” Kurtzman said. “I’m certain she’ll carry that passion into the next phase of her amazing career, I’m so grateful for the time we’ve shared, and I wish her every success and happiness on her bright road ahead.

Family road movie and sci-fi conspiracy merge in this subtle psychological drama from Beast director Michael Pearce
Otherworldly science fiction meets down-to-earth psychological realism in director and co-writer Michael Pearce’s impressive follow-up to 2017’s brilliant Beast. Boasting yet another standout performance by Riz Ahmed, the nuances of which are superbly amplified by Jed Kurzel’s slowly mutating score, this is a genre-hopping affair, balanced between tangible personal experience and growing paranoia, an affecting meld of inner and outer worlds in which family stresses and extraterrestrial spectres collide.
Like Nic Roeg’s The Man Who Fell to Earth, to which this owes a tonal debt, Encounter opens with images of objects plummeting through the atmosphere toward our planet’s surface. From here we move to Blue Velvet-style closeups of insects, vividly illustrating alien microbes entering the ecosystem. Then we’re in Apocalypse Now territory, as Ahmed’s Malik Khan awakens in his hotel room.

Given it’s been a tough 12 months for cinema, it would be an achievement to appear in just one of the top 10 highest grossing films of the year. Naomie Harris has appeared in two: “No Time to Die” and “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” as MI6 secretary Moneypenny and superhero Shriek, respectively.
Now the actor, who has spent much of her career moving seamlessly between big budget blockbusters such as “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” and indie fare, ends the year on screen in Apple Original Films’ “Swan Song” opposite Mahershala Ali, a sci-fi tearjerker that’s already picking up Oscar buzz.
And as if she wasn’t busy enough, having also recently wrapped Showtime series “The Man Who Fell to Earth” opposite Chiwetel Ejiofor, Harris is making her producing debut, she exclusively tells Variety, on a project about an aspect of Black history traditionally under-explored in cinema...
