Les Dominique
The psychological horror/thriller genre, popularised by Les Diaboliques in 1955, was continued by the likes of Hammer Studios throughout the '60s and well into the next decade; by the end of the seventies, virtually all of the genre's twists and turns had been fully explored, which means that Dominique (1979) holds few surprises for fans of such movies, its plot highly contrived, very silly, and, consequently, not very suspenseful.
Jean Simmons plays disabled millionairess Dominique Ballard, who believes that her husband David (Cliff Robertson) is trying to send her insane so that he can get his grubby mitts on her fortune. The frightened woman goes to new chauffeur Tony (Simon Ward) for help, but he turns her away, afraid that Mr. Ballard will find out and fire him. Soon after, Mrs. Ballard is found hanging in the conservatory, an apparent victim of suicide.
Returning home after the funeral, David begins to see and hear inexplicable supernatural occurrences that lead him to believe that he is being haunted by the vengeful spirit of Dominique. Is he really being tormented by his dead wife, or is there another explanation for the spooky events?
Do you really need to ask? The film is extremely predictable and it doesn't take a genius to figure out what is happening, who is behind it all, and why they are doing it. Fortunately, the amazing cast (which includes Ron Moody, Jack Warner, David Tomlinson, Flora Robson, the lovely Judy Geeson and the even lovelier Jenny Agutter) all do a sterling job and make the film a reasonably entertaining time-waster, just so long as one is able to ignore the many plot holes: how can David keep a revolver in his home, when we have strict gun control in the UK? What if David hadn't run away from Dominique's ghost, but rugby tackled her instead? And how was the piano rigged with a remote control without David noticing?
5/10 - It's preposterous and predictable, but not entirely without worth, although I could have done without all of that coloured lighting, which I found rather distracting.
