Following the death of her parents in a car crash, 10-year-old Sarah Brown (Tatum O'Neal) is forced to move from Arizona to England to live with her Aunt Velvet (Nanette Newman), one time winner of the Grand National Steeplechase, and her boyfriend, writer John Seaton (Christopher Plummer), but it takes Velvet's horse Pie to help Sarah and Velvet make a connection to each other. When Velvet buys Pie's last foal for Sarah, Sarah names him "Arizona Pie" and decides, with the help of Captain Johnson (Anthony Hopkins) as her trainer, to try for the British Olympic Team.
International Velvet is a movie sequel to National Velvet (1944) (1944), which was based on a 1935 novel, National Velvet, by English author Enid Bagnold [1889-1981]. The screenplay for International Velvet was written by English film-maker Bryan Forbes, who also produced and directed the film.
Twenty-six (26) years, evidenced by the fact that Velvet was 14 when she won the Grand National, and, near the end of the movie, Velvet mentions that she is now 40 years old.
1980, evidenced by the date on the medal that Sarah gives Velvet. The medal reads "XXII Olympiad". The 22nd Olympiad events took place in 1980.
Velvet, John, and Sarah live in Mothecombe, Devon, England, which is located in southwestern England, bordering Wales.
With her dislocated shoulder securely wrapped, Sarah is declared able to ride, but she's placed in the line-up to follow the other two members of the British team and will only ride if the team still has a hope of winning the medal when it gets to her turn. Howard (Douglas Reith) and Mike (Martin Neil) both ride well, so Sarah ends up riding, too. She does so well that the team wins the gold medal. The United States earns the silver, and Australia takes the bronze. Back in Mothecombe, as Velvet takes a lonely walk on the beach after receiving a postcard from Sarah saying only that she's getting married, John brings her a package that just arrived special delivery. Velvet opens it to find Sarah's Olympic gold medal and note sayng: I know there's more to winning than the prizes...you've taught me that. But since you never got to keep yours, I'd like you to have this. Love always, Sarah. John then tells Velvet that the package was hand-delivered, and Sarah comes running across the beach, her husband right behind her. In the final scene, Sarah introduces John and Velvet by saying, "I'd like you to meet my parents."
Sarah marries Scott Saunders (Jeffrey Byron), the captain of the U.S. Olympic equestrian team.
To an American's ears, the music would indeed signify "My country 'tis of thee". To English ears, however, the music signifies the English national anthem, "God save our gracious queen". The music is the same for both songs.
