Quotes

  • Scarecrow : Now I'll never get my brain!

    Tinman : Nor my heart.

    Lion : Or my courage

Dorothy : But you don't need them now because you've had them all the time. Scarecrow, you're the one who figured out how to find the yellow brick road and how to destroy Evillene, and every smart move we've made, didn't you? Lion, you wouldn't even give up when Evillene strung you up by your tail. And, Tin Man, you have more heart than anyone I've ever known.

    Tinman : [hopeful]  Honest?

Dorothy : Yeah, you never needed anything from the fake wizard, anyway.

  • Scarecrow : Success, fame, and fortune, they're all illusions. All there is that is real is the friendship that two can share.

Dorothy : That's beautiful! Who said that?

    Scarecrow : [modestly]  I did.

  • Glinda the Good : Hello, Dorothy.

Dorothy : Please, is there a way for me to get back home?

Glinda the Good : Well, Dorothy, you were wise and good enough to help your friends to come here and find what was inside them all the time. That's true for you, also.

Dorothy : Home? Inside of me? I don't understand.

Glinda the Good : Home is a place we all must find, child. It's not just a place where you eat or sleep. Home is knowing. Knowing your mind, knowing your heart, knowing your courage. If we know ourselves, we're always home, anywhere.

    [singing]

Glinda the Good : If you believe, Within your heart, You'll know, That no one can change, The path that you must go...

  • [last lines]

    Dorothy : l'm ready now.

Glinda the Good : Think of home.

    Dorothy : Home.

    [singing]

Dorothy : When I think of home, I think of a place where there's love overflowing. I wish I was home, I wish I was back there with the things I been knowing. Wind that makes the tall trees bend into leaning. Suddenly, the snowflakes that fall have a meaning. Sprinkling the scene, makes it all clean. Maybe there's a chance for me to go back, now that I have some direction. It would sure be nice to be back home where there's love and affection. And just maybe I can convince time to slow up, giving me enough time in my life to grow up. Time, be my friend, let me start again. Suddenly my world's gone and changed its face, but I still know where I'm going. I have had my mind spun around in space, and yet I've watched it growing. And if you're listening, God, please don't make it hard to know if we should believe in the things that we see. Tell us, should we run away, should we try and stay, or would it be better just to let things be? Living here, in this brand new world might be a fantasy, but it taught me to love, so it's real, real to me. And I've learned that we must look inside our hearts to find a world full of love, like yours, like mine. Like home!

  • Aunt Em : Girl, do you know that you're 24 years old, and...

Aunt Em , Dorothy : You've never been south of 125th Street?

Aunt Em : Well, you haven't!

  • The Wiz : Dorothy...

    [pause]

The Wiz : Can you do something for me?

Dorothy : They've had what they've been searching for in them all along. I don't what's in you. You'll have to find that out for yourself. But I do know one thing: you'll never find it in the safety of this room. I tried that all my life. It doesn't work. There's a whole world out there. And you'll have to begin by letting people see who you really are.

  • Lion : Mamma would be so proud - goin' to see da WIZ!

    [preens]

Lion : My momma used to say ta me, Fleet -...

    Tinman , Scarecrow , Dorothy : FLEET?

Lion : That's my name: Fleetwood Coupe de Ville!

    Tinman , Scarecrow , Dorothy : [snickers]

Lion : Momma had high ideals...

    Tinman : Yeah!

    Lion : - Y'know what I mean?

    Tinman : Yeah!

    [Lion and Tin Man high-five]

    Tinman : Ha hah!

  • The Munchkins : [after the Witch is killed, the Munchkins turn from graffiti back into children]  Two, 4, 6, 8! Who do we appreciate?

    Dorothy : [terrified]  No! No!

  • Dorothy : He must really be in shock!

Tinman : Oh, what I wouldn't give to be in shock! Just Once!

  • Dorothy : [Attempting to make the Tinman cry]  Quick! Find a really sad saying!

Scarecrow : [Reaches into his hair and pulls out a piece of paper]  Uh... showers this morning, clearing by tonight!

  • Evillene : Would you like sauerkraut or mustard, my dear, on your hot dog?

Dorothy : Toto! Toto! No! No!

    [Evillene laughs]

  • Scarecrow : I'll think about you all the time, Dorothy!

Tinman : And I'll miss you... every day. Even if I had to go back to that junk pile... even as teeny's seat cushion... I wouldn't mind... because I have known... real love.

    [cries]

Dorothy : Aww... don't rust yourself now.

    [wipes away the tears]

  • Dorothy : Hello?

Tinman : [after Dorothy cannot find his heart in his chest]  Nobody home in Soulville.

  • Dorothy : You mean, you sent us to kill Evillene, knowing we might never come back?

The Wiz : She would have killed me, she would have found out I had no power, and took over Oz.

    Dorothy : That's no excuse.

  • Scarecrow : Say, what's your name?

Dorothy : My name is - Dorothy.

Scarecrow : Dorothy and Toto? What intelligent names. Okay, Dorothy and Toto, seems like we're gonna have to find our own yellow brick road. Ease on down. Ease on - down the road!

    Dorothy : There it is!

Scarecrow : Ease on down. Ease on down - down the road!

    Dorothy : Oh!

Scarecrow : Don't you carry nothin', that might be a load.

    Dorothy : There it is.

Scarecrow : Dorothy! Look! Dorothy! Ta-da! Woo! Come on, Dorothy! Come on! Woo! Woo.

    [singing]

    Scarecrow : Come on and...

Scarecrow , Dorothy : Ease on down, Ease on down the road, Come on, ease on down, Ease on down the road, Don't you carry nothin', that might be a load, Come on, ease on down, Ease on down, down the road...

  • Dorothy : l can't see how going south of 125th Street ever made anybody's life better.

Aunt Em : And you're never gonna know unless you try, are you?

  • Dorothy : Toto! Toto. There you go.

  • Dorothy : First thing we have to do is get rid of these crows. Come on, Toto. Sic them ! Get! Shoo! Shoo! Shoo! Shoo! Before I call the taxidermist, you *jive* turkeys!

  • Dorothy : Where's my home? Where's Aunt Em? Where's New York?

  • Dorothy : What's a Wiz?

    Miss One : What's a? What's a Wiz?

  • Dorothy : There. How does that feel?

Tinman : But that's the whole tragic point, my friends.

    [singing]

Tinman : What wouId I do, If I could suddenly feel? And to know once again, That what I feel is real...

  • Dorothy : You could come with us to see the Wiz.

  • Dorothy : l have to go all the way, even if it means to Evillene. Come on, Toto. Good boy.

  • The Wiz : So, you wanted to meet the Wizard? What do you sniveling deadbeats want? That's close enough!

Dorothy : My name is Dorothy and. - and l'm trying to get home. And these are my friends. This is the Scarecrow. He wants... Tell him.

Scarecrow : A brain, Your Majesty. Some of your great wizdom.

  • Dorothy : Guess who got had?

  • Scarecrow : The results of the first experiment, subject is a hopeless failure.

    Dorothy : You are not.

    Scarecrow : Yes, I am.

Dorothy : You're just a product of some negative thinking.

  • Dorothy : [after a taxi abandons her]  Miss One? Miss One?

[notices that Miss One and the Munchkins suddenly has disappeared]

Dorothy : [shouts desperately]  MISS ONE!

[her voice echoes as the wind begins to blow]

Dorothy : [singing sadly]  There's... a feeling... here inside... that I cannot hide. And I know I've tried. But it's turning me around. I'm not sure... that I'm aware, if I'm up or down, or here or there. I need both feet on the ground. Maybe I'm just going crazy. Letting myself get uptight. I'm acting just like a baby. But I'm... gonna be... I'm gonna be alright. Soon as I get home. Soon as I get home. Soon as I get home.

[Dorothy and Toto leave and find themselves at a junkyard]

Dorothy : In a different place, in a different time, different people around me. I would like to know of that different world and how different they find me. And just what's a Wiz? Is he big, will he scare me? If I ask to leave, will the Wiz even hear me? How will I know then if I'll ever be home again? Here I am alone, though it feels the same, I don't know where I'm going. I'm here on my own and it's not a game and a strange wind is blowing. I'm so amazed at the things that I see here. Don't want to be afraid; I just don't want to be here. In my mind, this is clear. What am I doing here? I wish... I was home.

    [begins to cry]

    Dorothy : I wish... I wish... I wish, I wish...

  • Tinman : Stop the music! Stop the music!

Dorothy : Really? You need more oil?

Tinman : No! That beast! He's checkin' us out!
