Michael J. Fox was in the running for the role of Tom Sawyer along with Sammy Snyders.
In an interview in the aughts, Dale Walters said that Sammy Snyders acted like a spoiled brat during the production and was difficult to work with. He said that Sammy Snyders did not learn his lines well and often wanted special treatment. He recounted that Sammy Snyders complained about working long hours and was reticent and resistant about having to be naked while filming a swimming sequence, whereas he and Ian Tracey put their modesty aside to film the sequence authentically to the script and the story.
Holly Findlay, who played Becky Thatcher, was still sending Christmas cards to Sammy Snyders as of the year that the 30 minute "making of" segment was made.
Various sternwheeler riverboats appear in the series. The Julia Belle Swain appears in the opening and closing credits, and are in fact the only scenes that were actually shot on the Mississippi River.
In The making Of Huckleberry Finn And His Friends, Ian Tracey says that while most of the filming was done in British Columbia, Aunt Polly's House was located just over the US border at Point Roberts.
