His new movie, Last Vegas, is a geriatric take on the party town stag weekend. He talks about why he'll never return, Hollywood's obsession with youth, and playing Falstaff in a fat suit
Last year, Kevin Kline spent a fortnight in Las Vegas shooting his latest movie. It was his first trip to that infamous mecca of sex and excess. "And my last," proclaims the 66-year-old, voice rolling, theatrical. "Everyone looked so miserable. I would see these couples pushing babies in strollers through the casinos like zombies. It was horrible." He shakes his head, sorrowful.
"And I just couldn't bear the constant noise. I would step outside the hotel to get some fresh air and it would be 'boom, boom, boom'" – he does an impressive impression of pounding bassline – "disco music blaring on the kerb, by the pool, everywhere. That is not my idea of tranquillity."
This, I suspect, is more like it.

Takings for Les Mis, Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty warm up as the snow melts
Les Misérables opened spectacularly a couple of weekends ago with £8.13m, then suffered a hefty 46% drop on its second frame when blankets of snow discouraged cinemagoing across the country. For round three, would the stage musical adaptation rally its forces to man the box-office barricades, or crumble?
To the presumed delight of backers Universal and other interested parties, Tom Hooper's all-singing extravaganza has held up just fine, with a very modest 9% drop, for third-weekend takings of £4.01m, and a cume of £24.61m. Only four films released last year – Avengers Assemble, The Dark Knight Rises, Skyfall and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – managed three consecutive frames at £4m-plus, and all of them went on to achieve box office in excess of £50m.
Over the past week, Les Misérables has overtaken both Moulin Rouge (£18.5m) and...

Summary: The story revolves around a group of style-obsessed college girls who take in a new student (Gerwig) and teach her their misguided ways of helping people at their grungy university.
Analysis: The first film in a decade from arthouse darling Whit Stillman, a filmmaker's filmmaker whose three Manhattan-based, yuppie-themed mannerist comedies - "Metropolitan," "Barcelona" and "The Last Days of Disco" - were a big influence on the likes of auteurs such as Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach. Back for its third year (see the 2010 edition) and bigger than ever, today kicks off the first in a fifteen-part look at the various cinematic releases hitting the U.S. in 2011. Each 'part' contains brief descriptions and editorial opinion/analysis of varying length covering twenty films. Expect the remaining ones to go up between now and the first major releases in mid-January.
Like all cinematic lists set within a timeframe, there's some overlap. Some films here have already opened worldwide but have yet to hit the U.S., some upcoming films you'd expect to be here aren't because they're either still in development or have already announced 2012 release dates, some were on last year's list but got delayed so have been included again (but with all new analysis).
I confined my list to films that have either set 2011 release dates or had begun/completed production, and only films that have...

Looking To Bring 'Morning Glory' Helmer Roger Mitchell On Board Fresh from his behind-the-camera debut with a modern reimagining of William Shakespeare's "Coriolanus," Ralph Fiennes is reportedly already circling his next project, an adaptation of George Orwell's "Burmese Days." The actor, though, is presumably eyeing it as a starring vehicle rather than a directing gig as he is also looking to bring "Morning Glory" helmer Roger Michell on board the project, which is being produced by Avram Ludwig with a script by "Fair Game" scribe John Henry Butterworth. No doubt inspired by Orwell's own years as a police officer in…...

There are some very wild big screen adaptations/interpretations of William Shakespeare in the works right now. We've got Ralph Fiennes' modern-day version of Coriolanus complete with modern military. And we've also got Julie Taymor's The Tempest, which kind of looks like Tarsem decided to go Shakespeare, too, but with Taymor's touch. Taymor adapted Shakespeare once before, with Titus, but she is back again with The Tempest, starring Helen Mirren (seen above), Alfred Molina, Russell Brand (yes, that guy), Alan Cumming, Djimon Hounsou, Chris Cooper, David Strathairn and Ben Whishaw. So check out the official poster below! The poster comes from Yahoo and a few new photos were released as well (you can see a few on SlashFilm). In Julie Taymor's version of The Tempest, the gender of Prospero has been switched to Prospera (Mirren). Prospera is usurped by her brother and sent off with her four-year daughter on a ship.

You better pray to the god of Casting Tidbits that this wind doesn't pick up, 'cause I'll come over there, and jam an oar up your ass! First up, Risky Biz reports that Elias Koteas, who will forever be known as Casey Jones, has landed a role in the Winnie Mandela biopic (wife of Nelson Mandela) in the aptly titled Winnie. Jennifer Hudson has taken the title role with Terrence Howard attempting to follow in Morgan Freeman's footsteps by portraying Nelson Mandela. Koteas will play De Vries, an overzealous officer in the apartheid police state who rises in power and becomes intent on stopping Winnie and activists from gaining power. Second, THR reports Jessica Chastain, an up and coming actress with roles in upcoming films like Terrence Malick's Tree of Life and the contemporary Shakespeare adaptation of Coriolanus, has landed a role in The Help. Kino Gallery has got its hand on several new images from "Coriolanus" which is adapted from William Shakespeare's work of the same title. Though the original story is based on legendary Roman leader, Gaius Marcius Coriolanus, the film will be set in contemporary time as seen in the pictures.
Some of the photos feature Ralph Fiennes as the titular character, and Gerard Butler who plays an army commander and nemesis of Coriolanus. Both are wearing army costumes in the stills. Moreover, some other images give a look at the battle scenes.
Beside starring in it, Fiennes will make "Coriolanus" as his first directing vehicle and produce it alongside John Logan, Gabrielle Tana, Julia Taylor-Stanley and Colin Vaines. Other cast members include William Hurt, Eddie Marsan, Jessica Chastain as well as Vanessa Redgrave. This drama thriller has not set a release date.

Thanks to KinoGallery, we now have new photos from Ralph Fiennes' upcoming contemporary adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Coriolanus" play. The shots feature a look at Fiennes and Gerard Butler. Check them out below. Shakespeare's play revolves around a Roman general, who is exiled from the city, but later returns with his sworn enemy to destroy it. The new movie will take place in a Serbian city of Pancevo. Fiennes will play the General, while Butler will play Tullus Aufidius, the enemy who he teams with. Fiennes, who is making his helming debut, clearly wants the film to look similar to "The Hurt Locker" since he hired "Locker" cinematographer Barry Ackroyd for "Coriolanus." You may remember a couple of months ago seeing some pretty wild first photos from the upcoming Ralph Fiennes directed Shakespeare adaptation Coriolanus. They were striking because it looks as is Fiennes is setting the film in more modern times - during the Iraq war - as the photos look more like they're from The Hurt Locker than any Shakespeare movie. Anyway, a few brand new photos were discovered on KinoGallery today (via JoBlo) featuring both Gerard Butler and Fiennes, who stars as Coriolanus. I'm not sure which scene this is, but it looks pretty frickin' gritty and intense for Shakespeare. And that's why I want to see this! The story in William Shakespeare's Coriolanus follows Roman military leader Caius Martius, who returns home from a war against the Volscans as a war hero with a new last name, Coriolanus, given for the city he conquered. However, he is...

Here's a project we've heard practically nothing about so far. Ralph Fiennes is shooting a modern day remake of William Shakespeare's Coriolanus, and for his directorial debut, he’s recruited Gerard Butler, Vanessa Redgrave and Brian Cox to star alongside him. The original play follows an exiled general's march on Rome, and as you can see from these photos from the set, Fiennes has thrust the film into present day, though how exactly the story conforms to the original remains to be...

Written by John Logan, the film stars Gerard Butler, Fiennes, William Hurt, Eddie Marsan, Jessica Chastain, Brian Cox and Vanessa Redgrave. The Hurt Locker cinematographer Barry Ackroyd is on board as well. The following is how Icon Entertainment describes the contemporary version of William Shakespeare's drama: The citizens of Rome are hungry. Coriolanus, the hero of Rome, a great soldier and a man of inflexible self-belief despises the people. His extreme views ignite a mass riot. Rome is bloody. Manipulated and out-maneuvered by politicians and even his own mother Volumnia, Coriolanus is banished from Rome. He offers his life or his services...

Whoa! Last year it was announced that actor Ralph Fiennes would be making his debut as a director on a contemporary adaptation of William Shakespeare's play Coriolanus. At the time, we didn't actually know how contemporary it would be, but thanks to these first photos from the set in Serbia, it looks like Fiennes has actually set his film around the Iraq war. Action blog 30 Ninjas has the scoop on the photos, which come from the first week's battle scenes in the Serbian city of Pancevo. Fiennes is also starring in this as the lead along with Gerard Butler, Brian Cox, William Hurt, Eddie Marsan, Jessica Chastain & Vanessa Redgrave. Obviously comparisons are already being made to The Hurt Locker, especially because that took home the Best Picture Oscar earlier this year, and an Iraq war movie combined with Shakespeare instantly sounds like more Oscar bait. The story in Coriolanus...

I've said it before: Coriolanus is one of my favorite William Shakespeare plays. Sure, it has something to do with Christopher Walken, but it's also a fun and fiery, war-centric, drama-laden story that's been criminally ignored by Hollywood... until now. Ralph Fiennes decided to make Coriolanus his directorial debut last year -- while also taking the starring role alongside Gerard Butler's Tullus Aufidius, Brian Cox's Menenius, and Vanessa Redgrave's Volumnia -- and now production is kicking into high gear with camouflage, guns, and dusty explosions.
30Ninjas has created a rather thorough blog on the production -- casting, concept art, and, now, a few photos from set. One of the pair is at the top of this post, and as you can see, this isn't your typical historical adaptation. Fiennes has chosen to go with a modern retelling that looks a lot like The Hurt Locker, between the...

Here's the first look of Ralph Fiennes in the upcoming Coriolanus. Fiennes is helming the film which is based on a play of the same name by William Shakespeare. So, maybe it's not historically accurate, but who the hell cares? Obviously it takes a more modern turn like other films derived from Shakespearean plays like Romeo & Juliet, 10 Things I Hate About You...you get it. Way back in February it was announced that actor Ralph Fiennes would make his debut as a director on a contemporary adaptation of William Shakespeare's play Coriolanus. THR announces, from the on-going American Film Market this week, that Gerard Butler has been cast in the lead role opposite Fiennes, who will also be acting as well as directing. Butler will play Tullus Aufidius, commander of the Volscian army. He joins a cast that includes William Hurt, Eddie Marsan, Jessica Chastain and Vanessa Redgrave. The script was written by John Logan (Gladiator, The Last Samurai). Shooting starts in March next year in Serbia. Coriolanus is a play that's not often taught in schools and most people probably haven't read. It's set in the early years of the Roman Republic, however it sounds like Fiennes has contemporized it instead. The story follows Roman military leader Caius Martius, who returns home from...

Gerard Butler is officially attached to co-star in Ralph Fiennes' directorial debut Coriolanus, a contemporary riff on the Roman political drama by William Shakespeare. He will portray Tullus Aufidius, the commander of the Volscian army and reliably shouty nemesis of the title character. Keeping in mind Butler's '09 triptych of Ugly Truth/Gamer/Law Abiding Citizen, the move underscores just how dramatically the scourge of inflation has impacted many A-listers' "one for them, one for me" philosophy. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, many of you feel my client Gerard Butler should be placed on movie star probation. In the light of new evidence, I plan to petition for a retrial as it would appear that Mr. Butler has abandoned romantic comedies in order to accept a role from England's greatest playwright. I've had Morgan Freeman on the mind lately, between pride that he was able to inspire Prom Night in Mississippi, the fact that he once played Coriolanus (someone must re-release that!), and then memories of him in the past. As we once mentioned in an old Rewind from 2007, before he was God, or the narrator king, right-hand man of the Dark Knight, or Frederick Douglass, he was Count Dracula on the so-cool-it-should-never-have-ended The Electric Company (amongst other equally cool characters).
In the below clip, which makes me want to marry YouTube for its awesome usefulness, Freeman is taking a bath in a casket, bubbles and all. He's not only taking a bath -- he's singing while he does it, about his love for bathing in a casket, where a bath will never leave a ring. I suddenly want a full EC DVD set...

I never thought the day would arrive that I could blog this news! Coriolanus is hitting the screen in its first big feature film. After countless reimaginings of star-crossed lovers, turmoil in Hamlet town, and double toil and trouble, we're finally getting something new in Shakespeare Land. (And it only took a year after making my wish known as King Lear got another dose of the feature treatment.)
Empire reports that Ralph Fiennes is going to make his directorial debut with his take on the war-filled play, John Logan is penning the adaptation, and he's lined up Vanessa Redgrave, William Hurt, and Jessica Chastain to star. Coriolanus is one of Shakespeare's tragedies that follows Gaius Martius, a determined and formidable Roman general who is not a fan of the lower classes. He wins a great battle for Rome, becomes a hero, and is invited to become a consul in the...

Variety brings word Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson have both joined the cast of Louis Leterrier's Clash of the Titans as the faces of the gods begin to take shape. Fiennes will play Hades, the lord of the underworld, while Neeson will play the all powerful Zeus. The two join already cast Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation), Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace), Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) and Alexa Davalos (whom I happen to be watching at this very moment in Chronicles of Riddick). Worthington is toplining the Greek-god epic as Perseus, following his quest to battle both Medusa and the Kraken monster in order to save the Princess Andromeda. Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay wrote the script. Mikkelsen is playing Draco, a skilled fighter and leader of the Praetorian Guard that accompanies Perseus. Davalos is Andromeda, the captured princess, and Arterton is Io, who is instrumental in bringing the winged horse Pegasus to Perseus.

Voldemort is going to direct a movie! Oscar nominated actor Ralph Fiennes, who plays Voldemort in the Harry Potter movies, will make his directorial debut with an adaptation of William Shakespeare's Roman tragedy Coriolanus. In addition to directing, Fiennes will also play the title role of the proud but contemptuous soldier Coriolanus spurred on by his mother to run for the Roman Senate, which ultimately leads to his downfall. Vanessa Redgrave is in talks to play the part of Coriolanus' mother Volumnia. Fiennes has already scouted for locations in East Europe and is currently in negotiations with financiers. Shakespeare's play, set in the early years of the Roman Republic, is one of his most politically challenging examinations of the way power corrupts. In the aftermath of a famine, the people demand the right to set their own price for the city's grain. In response to their protests, the...
