On September 15, 1980, stunt driver Gary Wells was injured while performing a 170' (52 m) motorcycle leap over the fountains of Caesars Palace in Paradise, Nevada, a feat attempted (and failed) by the famed daredevil Evel Knievel. He was a few inches from the ramp that was supposed to slow his descent when he landed on the pavement and crashed his motorcycle into a wall, suffering a tear in the main artery of his heart, along with broken legs, a fractured pelvis, and a concussion. Six spectators were also injured as a 15' (4.6 m) section of the wall gave way upon impact.
