Sex & Nudity

  • Full frontal and rear girl and teenage girl nudity
  • In one scene, the two main characters are seen sitting nude and eating native fruit. They proceed to kiss, and Richard climbs on top of Emmeline, and his butt is seen for a lengthy period.
  • The two main characters of the movie are cousins, and as the movie progresses, they fall in love, have sex, and make a baby by chance. In the 19th century when the movie took place, it was considered normal for first cousins to marry.
  • There are several sex scenes through the movie some more graphic then others, despite Brooke Shields being a minor at the time, the scenes are overly graphic. After these scenes, there is generally kissing, hugging, them laying on each other, touching and kissing various parts of their bodies, specifically when Emmeline is slowly kissing down Richard's bare chest. But also scenes with them giving each other hickeys.
  • Richard gets out of the sea naked and walks toward the camera. His whole body is silhouetted, however his penis is quite visible.
  • There is one brief sex scene up against a tree, soft moaning is heard from the female.
  • Emmeline and Richard both have an orgasm in one scene as they have sex loud moaning and thrusting is heard as well as "oh god ahh ahh!"
  • Significant nudity, both male and female, often full frontal. But most of the time, it is in underwater swimming sequences, breasts and genitals seen in all swimming scenes. Pubic hair is clearly visible on Richard in and out of the water.
  • There is a masturbation scene. This scene is viewed from behind, and a reasonable distance away, Richard's arm is seen moving up and down, before he is interrupted.
  • There is a lovemaking scene, which actually is spaced out into several short scenes. In one shot, filmed from extremely far away, the couple is seen making love in an inlet, with water splashing against them and the rocks.
  • There is a childbirth scene.

Violence & Gore

  • Blood is seen when Emmeline gets her first menstural period, she is underwater and it could be confusing to some viewers. Not graphic.
  • In a scene, a group of natives perform a tribal ceremony where a man is briefly shown getting his head chopped off. Some blood is shown.
  • Emmeline vomits on account of her pregnancy.

Profanity

  • One use of "damn" and "sweet Jesus".

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • An elderly man gets drunk, which leads to his death.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • In her rage, Emmeline throws a coconut at Richard's head and knocks him unconscious.
  • Young Richard holds a skull that he found in his hand, then drops the skull.
  • A crab crawls out of the mouth of a dead body.
  • Later, the skeleton of that dead body is shown, years after it has completely decayed into bones. The young man who finds the skeleton compares the bones of the dead man's hand with his own hand.
  • Christopher Atkins' character is threatened by a shark.
