Orchestrator of Storms: The Fantastique World of Jean Rollin, from here on simply Orchestrator of Storms, is a long overdue examination of the works of French filmmaker Jean Rollin, a man who has been labelled everything from an auteur to a pornographer and a hack.
Writer/directors Dima Ballin and Kat Ellinger have worked together on several previous documentary shorts about genre films and filmmakers such as The Tale of Mr. Corman and Mr. Poe and The Magnificent Obsession of Michael Reeves as well as on individual projects. However, coming in at an hour and fifty-two minutes Orchestrator of Storms is anything but short.
Orchestrator of Storms picks up almost from the moment of Rollin’s birth to a father who worked in the theatre and a mother who had been an artist’s model. It was his mother who raised him after his father left. The film explores how...

Lucio Fulci, Frankenhooker and more in our round up of new horror Blu-rays and DVDs...
So, what’s your personal idea of hell? For this writer, it would almost certainly involve being chained down in the audience of an eternal live filming of Loose Women as Donald Trump waves a slice of tiger bread, forever just out of reach. Yours is likely to be similar, though it would have to be pretty grim indeed to come anywhere near Lucio Fulci’s 1981 career-best infernal vision and perhaps the definitive (obviously other than Little Nicky) cinematic depiction of eternal damnation, The Beyond.

Shock pits two awesomely pitiful exploitation classics against each other. Nazis suck. But oddly, after the real-life Reich bastards got flushed at the end of WW2, there was a weird wave of Nazi horror films and exploitation romps that, despite their grim subject matter, were very successful. We can get into that unsavory post-the Night…

I recently wrote a piece about horror films that I do not think are loved enough, so to redress the balance, I thought that I would treat you to films that are loved too much – the big horror names that everyone falls over themselves to pay homage to and to compliment which are really mind bogglingly awful. Some of these films are considered classics of the horror film realm and many are considered to be de rigeur.
Now I am not a snob when it comes to horror films. Otherwise I would never have watched Zombie Lake. But Zombie Lake knows that it is a really stupid film and doesn’t take itself seriously. It is unadulterated garbage but it doesn’t pretend to be ground breaking, pioneering or even coherent at times. This makes it endearingly dreadful in a way that only fans of trash cinema can appreciate.

The early films by Jean Rollin are different pockets of the same world. The stretch of beach near Dieppe acts as a portal connecting these pockets, which are populated by vampires, clowns, wide-eyed innocents, and the generally inexplicable. Watching them, we’re caught in the midst of waking dreams, all springing from the same mind. When mention is made of a “Jean Rollin film,” these early films are the ones that people think of first. The creations of a dreamer who is wrapped in a reverie, letting ideas and images affix themselves to celluloid as they wish. Like many films, they reflect their maker; someone intoxicated by mystery, surreality, and the bizarre. Unlike other filmmakers, who are able to simply (or, more likely, not so simply) spin out variation after variation of their established prototype, Rollin had to rise from his slumber. The films he made...

Night of the Living Dead Resurrection claims to be A Brand New Take on the Horror Classic clearly telegraphing that this is based on the 1968 masterpiece Night of the Living Dead directed by the legendary George A. Romero. That may be true this may be based on the film that also lends its name but if thats true then Zombieland Zombie Lake Zombies Zombies Zombies and Resident Evil are also based on Night of the Living Dead because they all have zombies in them too. The presence of zombies is the only thing this film has in common with Romeros classic.

There’s a winking truth-in-advertising with Rebellion’s Sniper Elite: Nazi Zombie Army. It spells itself out in its title, throwing any and all subtlety completely out the window in its pursuit of grindhouse pleasures. It hearkens back to the rollicking Seventies, when Nazi Zombies were a surprisingly well-worn trope. Jean Rollin made Zombie Lake, maestro of sleaze Jess Franco threw his hat into the ring with Oasis of the Zombies, and Ken Wiederhorn directed the more subtly titled Shock Waves. Unfortunately, most of these movies weren’t particularly noteworthy, especially when stripped of the eroticism that was usually prevalent in Rollin and Franco’s work. Sniper Elite: Nazi Zombie Army falls into this same lame category, somehow taking a sleazy but entertaining premise and producing a final product that, sadly, should have never risen.

I had the honor of touring the set of this raunchy sex/alcohol poisoning comedy in Seattle around 2011 or so (I can't quite remember for some reason) and got to watch Justin Chon ride a mechanical buffalo while projectile vomiting.

Eurotrash? I would call it Eurotreasure. But that’s just me. Folks are used to the mid to high brow films coming from our Continental friends. Virtually everyone has heard of Bergman, they may have no clue of his films but they know they are high art gloominess. Now I happen to be a huge fan of old Bergy and if I felt like it, I could discuss his films until the cows come home.
But I am schizophrenic in my tastes. As much as I love Through a Glass Darkly, I also love The Seduction of Inga - a Swedish sexploiter. As happy in the gutter as I am in the arthouse, I have put aside my Bresson DVDs to bring you the Top 50 Eurotrash films. These films are not ranked by the best as that would have scrambled my mind, but it is a pretty good general guide...

Charles Band, who currently runs Full Moon Features, started Wizard Video in 1980 and was a pioneer in the early days of the home video market. He specialized in horror flicks, and was responsible for first bringing titles like Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and I Spit on Your Grave to the home market.
During a recent warehouse cleaning, Band discovered a treasure trove of original, mint-condition VHS boxes. These are not the typical cardboard slipcovers most people think about when they think of VHS boxes (those of us old enough to remember VHS.) These are oversized boxes - some cardboard, some plastic clamshell boxes - that had a brief run in the early 1980s before everyone moved to the cheaper, smaller cardboard sleeves.
Band is now releasing these original cases with authentic VHS reproductions of the movies inside. Rolling out four a month for the next nine months, some of the...

As a child of the 80′s, the video store was my second home. There were a few shops here in St. Louis that carried some big box titles and among them, I always remembered Wizard Video. One of Wizard Video’s most notorious releases was I Spit on Your Grave. In the past few years, VHS tapes have become a collector’s item of sorts. Some people I know go crazy and try and collect all the VHS tapes they can find. I am a bit more selective with what I pick up (I tend to go for big boxes and releases that have some nostalgia for me). There is no doubt that there is still a market in VHS. Is it the best format to watch a film, no. However, there is a certain allure to watch a film on VHS. It feels more organic and feels dynamic and...

First up on February 19th, Olive Films is set to give the Blu-ray treatment to Night of the Demons 2, director Brian Trenchard-Smith’s well-regarded 1994 direct-to-video sequel starring Christi Harris, Amerlia Kinkade, Robert Jayne, Zoe Trilling, and a pre-Mrs. Ben Stiller Christine Taylor.
In this diabolical sequel to the popular shocker, the students from St. Rita's Academy throw a party at a haunted house, only to have it disrupted by Angela, the hostess from Hell, and her ghoulish pals. The kids try to find refuge at a teen dance, but things get even scarier there! Bobby Jacoby and Amelia Kinkade star in this special effects-filled terrorthon...

Enchanted forests, haunted hillsides, secluded cabins and the creatures that reside in dark places – have had us biting our nails since the early German Expressionist film era. Witches, werewolves, monsters and maniacs can be lurking ‘round the corner just about any place you can imagine. With Nicholas Cage’s Season of The Witch out on DVD and Blu-ray next week, we’re going to take a look at some of the most iconic and eerie locales in thrillers and horror films that make for the best places to splatter, slice and slash.
Lakes
Crystal Lake is well-known from the beloved Friday The 13th and even though those films are set in New York, there so happens to be a real Crystal Lake in the San Gabriel’s near Los Angeles that many horror fans like to claim as their own. Lake Placid is home to a killer crocodile and movies like Eden Lake,...

Tremors? Nightbreed? Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat? 976-evil? Are all on the list this year. And though there were not huge horror wins in sound editing through screenplays, the Technical Awards never cease to bring out the horror veterans. Notably Tim Drnec who contributed to such VHS classics as Alien Seed, Destroyer, and Prison won for his work on “Spydercam 3D volumetric suspended cable camera technologies.” An award also shared with Ben Britten Smith and Matt Davis who both also worked on Constantine.
But among all the winners, the Academy also honored some great loses in 2010. And though they mentioned some of our heroes, Dennis Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) and Dino de Laurentiis (King Kong), they did not mention Zelda Rubinstein or Corey Haim. But we will in this last section and the others lost to us last year.
So farewell fight fans and remember,...

If there's anything better than a Nazi in a movie, it's a Nazi in a horror movie. That's why I'm really happy to hear that Dutch filmmaker Raaphorst will finally be able to bring his Nazi zombie vision to the big screen for demented perverts like me, who enjoy nothing better than to see Nazis as zombies, vampires, victims, and villains.
Because they're the perfect villains. Perfect. It's very hard to make an argument about why anyone should have pity for any kind of a Nazi at all, even a non-zombie one, so using them as a device in a horror film is akin to brilliant. Last year's Dead Snow was one of the most original horror movies of the new decade because... the zombies were nazis. Imagine if the zombies in Dead Snow weren't Nazis, but just Danish people: Boring. No one cares abour Danish people. We Do care about Nazis,...

The Nazi zombie genre is not as huge as some may think, only 5 films populate this subgenre: Shockwaves, Zombie Lake, Oasis of the Zombies, Night of the Zombies, and, most recently, Dead Snow. Some may argue for Outpost as well, but that's about it. Shaun Robert Smith plans to add another to the pantheon.
The young British director is heading into production on The 4th Reich, which starts shooting in 3-D in mid-April. The film starts Tom Savini, Sean Pertwee (Dog Soldiers), and Craig Conway (Doomsday, the upcoming Devil's Playground). Here's the synopsis:
June 1944, after the glorious victory on D-day, the armies of the combined allied forces begin their long push to Berlin with the aim of bringing down Hitler and the despised Nazi regime of the Third Reich.
But buried deep in secret files German Reichstag, is the chilling reality of Hitler’s plan to create an eternal living hell,...

From MTV.Com: “Dead Snow” is a Norwegian splatter flick built around an idea that seems so classic, you almost wish no one had risked turning it into a movie and thus possibly screwing it up. The idea is this: Nazi zombies. Perfect, right?
Not unprecedented, of course. The 1977 “Shock Waves” is a hardy cult item along these lines, for one thing. I haven’t seen the German “Golden Nazi Vampire of Absam: Part II,” released into instant obscurity last year, but Jean Rollin addressed the Nazi-gut-muncher theme in his 1981 “Zombie Lake,” as did fellow hack Jesús Franco that same year with “Oasis of the Zombies.” Both of these characters, as you may know, screwed it up royally. So while “Dead Snow” may not be the first movie of its mini-genre, I think we can safely say it is, by simple default, one of the very best.
