Bloody Giallo
BandSAboutMovies7 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Directed by Manuel Esteba (El E. T. E. Y el Oto), who wrote the story with Xavier Flores, Sexo Sangriento is about the home of María Domènech (Mirta Miller), a place where she lives with her strange son (Ovidi Montllor). Psychology student Norma (Rosa Romero) convinces her friends Laura (Diana Conca) and Andrea (Viki Palma) to go to that house, thinking that it has been empty since the end of the Second World War. They have the plan to do a seance there before breaking down - bad omen - and having María, a painter, offer to host them in her ancient manor - even worse omen - for the evening.

Shot mostly handheld, this feels a bit Italian gothic as well as giallo what with the ghost in the basement. Then again, it also has someone wandering around before death with a knife stuck in their stomach, strange bloody paintings and a tomb beneath it all. This has the reputation for being sleazy but it's actually a decent movie. Maybe because it has a lead lesbian couple? Then again, one of the murders does get rather rough.

A lot of the music in Bloody Sex comes from the CAM Music Library, selecting some of the same songs that are in Pieces and Ring of Darkness. And you'll recognize Goblin's "L'alba dei morti vivirti" from Dawn of the Dead/Zombi, which Mattei reused for Virus - l'inferno dei morti viventi.

Sleazy Spanish horror film.
HumanoidOfFlesh23 September 2008
A medium and her two lesbian friends spend a fatal weekend in the sinister home of a woman and her disturbed son.The woman enjoys painting and stabbing her victims in the crotch during sex.I have seen "Sexo Sangriento" aka "Bloody Sex" in Spanish,so the plot wasn't fully understandable to me.One thing for sure:this Catalonian horror film was made during the time of the pro-Franco censorship. It mixes lesbian sleaze with satanic imagery and bloody axe murders. One of the killings is especially misogynistic:the unfortunate lesbian victim is stabbed in the crotch with a knife during sex. This scene reminded me similar moment from infamous "Giallo a Venezia" due to its savagery. The film is loaded with full-frontal nudity and the main music theme is strangely "Dawn of the Dead"-ish.It ends with Algernon Blackwood's quote.7 out of 10.

Sexo sangriento (1981)

** 1/2 (out of 4)

Spanish giallo is a rare title that has gained a rather notorious reputation over the years for its graphic sex and violence but what's actually here isn't too naughty. In the film, a woman takes her lesbian lover and best friend on a trip where they end up staying at a creepy home ran by a weird woman and her even weirder son. Soon the murders begin. I was really impressed with this film but not for the reasons I was expecting. I went into this movie expecting something extremely sleazy and dirty and while there are some kinky moments these aren't the only thing going for the film. What impressed me the most was the dark atmosphere created by director Esteba and this here is what really stands out. I thought the director did a very good job at building up this atmosphere and the settings perfectly fit in with this as did the music score (taken from various CAM catalogue titles). This film is pretty hard to see and I think its rareness has caused its reputation to get a lot more credit for being violent. The film's violence is in a sexual term as the killer likes to stab women in the crotch during sex but this here is done in a non-graphic style as we really only see the stabbing and then some minor blood. The sex scenes on the other hand are a bit more graphic but they're also extremely erotic, which is a major plus. It certainly doesn't hurt that the lead actress and her lesbian lover and very hot but the sex scenes don't leave anything to the imagination even though they never enter the hardcore level. Performances are about on the mark for a film like this and the better than average direction really keeps everything moving at a nice pace. To date there's never been any English subtitled or dubbed release so I'm sure I missed some information for the Spanish dialogue but it's still an impressive little film.
