Kevin Turvey's Sketchbook
Rabical-9115 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Rik Mayall's alter ego Kevin Turvey first came to life in 1981 on the BBC Scotland sketch show 'A Kick Up The Eighties' delivering surreal monologues before a live audience on subjects as diverse as work, sex, death, depression, the supernatural and the media among other things, wearing his trademark anorak. The following year he was given his own one-off show entitled 'Kevin Turvey - The Man Behind The Green Door'.

In 1989, the BBC released onto VHS a compilation of all the Turvey sketches from 'A Kick Up The Eighties' entitled 'Kevin Turvey Investigates'.

Many people were convinced that Kevin Turvey was a real person rather than a fictional creation. This was due to the fact that Mayall had insisted that Turvey's name appeared in the cast credits rather than his own name.

It was perhaps due to the fact that Turvey gave Mayall his first regular television exposure that his sketches were made into a compilation rather than sketches from 'A Kick Up The Eighties'. A nice idea, though in my opinion it would have been nice if they had made a compilation of 'A Kick Up The Eighties' as well ( the closest we got to that was when the BBC made a television compilation for Hogmanay in 1987 entitled 'A Kick Up The Bells' which featured sketches from 'A Kick Up The Eighties' and 'Laugh??? I Nearly Paid My Licence Fee'. It was never officially released ).

'Kevin Turvey Investigates' is ideal viewing if you do not have access to 'A Kick Up The Eighties' but if you are lucky enough to have a copy of the series ( which I do ) then I cannot really recommend this video to you.

Funniest sketch - the 'Death' sketch, purely because of Kevin's tale of visiting his 'girlfriend' Teresa Kelly. ''She's out walking the dog!'' Kevin is told by her mother at the door. ''Their dog died in 1977 and I know that because its buried under the onions I grow in my garden. So how could she possibly have been walking the dog, unless its had puppies, but then I would have noticed that the onions would have been disturbed!''.

Charming and thoughtful, laugh out loud ridiculous

When Kevin Turvey made his first appearance, people couldn't believe this incredibly stupid young man had got a job at BBC as a investigating reporter, who "investigates everything properly, not like Keith Marshall". People actually thought Kevin Turvey was for real. But that is however not the case. It was one of British comedian Rik Mayall's first roles.

Kevin investigates serious topics such as death, sex, love, leisure and the supernatural. But it is seldom he actually talks about the topics. There are more important things to talk about - like Theresa Kelly. This is a unique and funny stand-up act that is worth both repeated watching and listening. You can naturally buy Kevin Turvey's investigations on audio books as well as at assorted gas stations all around the UK! Recommended!

Extremely disappointing Warning: Spoilers
"Kevin Turvey Investigates" is a collection of several fairly short sketches. As a whole, it runs for slightly under 45 minutes, so can be still classified as a short film I guess. Writer and actor Rik Mayall brings us his trademark character of Kevin Turvey who elaborates on all kinds of (not so) important issues in this comedy performance. It may be a bit mean to say as I do not want to sound disrespectful in the light of Mayall's recent death, but I personally did not find it funny at all. There were here and there a moment that put a smile on my face, but these were really rare and certainly not as frequently as the moments where I shook my head about how unfunny this was for the most part yet trying to be funny and gloriously failing. The forced laughter from the "audience" wasn't helping things either. All in all, this was not a good watch at all and I highly recommend you to stay away. Thumbs down.

Kevin will have you in stitches!

First of all, this isn't a movie but a collection of comedy sketches. Kevin Turvey (played by Rik Mayall of "The Young Ones" and "Bottom" fame) is an investigative reporter who is given a topic each week to investigate and report on but rarely (ok, never) stays on topic! Instead, in his reports, he tells stories. Really STUPID stories that have absolutely NOTHING to do with the topic at hand. This video will have you rolling on the floor with side-splitting laughter! I recommend it to everyone as Kevin never fails to bring a smile to anyone's face!
