Ironic comedy with full of topics that partially portrays the society of the seventies and eighties
ma-cortes17 July 2022
Very mediocre and obscure comedy movie reflects in an ironic tone a way of living during the Spanish Transition and being middlingly made by Joaquin Coll Espona. This movie shows a way of living and thinking of upper and middle classes , politicians and villagers , a few years before and after dead of dictator Franco, in 1975 . It is a peculiar comedy in specific Spanish old fashioned style , so called costumbrism , about current people and politicians with a lot of satiric moments . The Mayor of a small but strategic town decides to be candidate again . In the plenary session of the town hall of a small town formed by the Mayor (José Luis López Vázquez) and councilmen (José Sazatornil , Saza, among others) whose manners are quite dictatorial approve commissioning Ramón (Ovidi Montllor) , a left-wing sculptor, to make an equestrian statue of Franco. This sculptor is a good man who's usually deceived by his wife (Nieves Navarro or Susan Scott) , friends and villagers , all of them attempting to take advantage of him. At first, he rejects it for ideological reasons, although later he accepts, since there are no equestrian marble statue s. When Ramón finally finishes the statue, Franco has died. After dead, in 1975, of dictator Franco the city council thinks that the time to inaugurate it has passed. To please Ramón, they approve the construction of another statue. This will be dedicated to democracy .

Amusing , but below average comedy with top-notch actors as José Luis López Vázquez as Mayor and José Sazatornil ¨Saza¨ who steals the show and overacting as the typically extreme fascist . So-so Spanish comedy of the 80s stars a great star-studded cast though really wasted due to their silly roles . The film depicts the Franco epoch and the post-dictatorship society , including a real politic satire , and being full of frivolity , egoism , duplicity , economic intrigues and deceits . It has very local aspects of the old Spanish society , concerning superiority of certain social states such as upper classes assuming that laws are not for them ; lying and abusing as a way of living ; nostalgia for the old Franco regime , double religious moral, sexual repression and corruption as a way of obtaining personal benefits . It is a nutty Spanish comedy that offers no intellectual stimulus whatsoever , though it has some fun and hilarious moments . Humor is sometimes cheesy and gross-out with numerous naughty and picaresque situations . This hilarious as well as average film is full of humor , absurd scenes , and narrating the conflict between the traditional Spanish society in which ruled a dictatorship and modernity with free elections, though corrupt ones , at times . It is a simple , and humorous portrait of a time when the Spanish people live in the seventies and eighties, including the consuming society , submitting the deceived population , the ambitious authorities and addding a lot of nudism in charge of Nieves Navarro . There are several topics in this film , though many of them we can find in current societies with much parallelism . Film about Francoist and post-Franco period , showing an electoral corruption , but the plot is infumable , badly-paced and implausible , it does not take advantage of its base of satire and tends towards nonsense jokes , ridiculousness , graceless and too much stereotypes . With a similar premise of political parody, at the time were realized similar flicks , such as : the underestimated ¨El alcalde y la política¨by Luis Maria Delgado , ¨! Que viene los socialistas!¨by Mariano Ozores , and "Vota A Gundisalvo" is much more recommendable , comical and intelligent, a film from the same period directed by Pedro Lazaga with Antonio Ferrandis as the starring ; adding those films written by Fernando Vizcaino Casas usually directed by Rafael Gil and that created an own sub-genre , such as : ¨Las Autonosuyas¨ , ¨La boda del señor cura¨, ¨De camisa vieja a chaqueta nueva¨, ¨Hijos de Papá¨, and especially : ¨..Y al tercer año, resucitó¨by Rafael Gil .

The motion picture was regularly written and directed by Joaquin Coll Espona who formerly directed a similar flick : ¨El fascista, la beata y su hija desvirgada¨ and other inferior comedies and dramas , such as : ¨Jugando a papás¨ , ¨Las locuras de Jane¨ , ¨Las camareras¨, ¨Los casados y la menor¨ , ¨Las correrías del Vizconde Arnau¨, ¨Los embarazados¨ , ¨Virginidad perdida¨, ¨Mi adúltero esposo ('in Situ')¨ , ¨La gran quiniela¨, among others .
