Hey all! John Fallon here aka The Arrow. Our docu-series, Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian: 80’s Horror Memories (binge it here), which thoroughly explores the decade in horror, is now 15 episodes in. We just wrapped 1980, 1981 and 1982 and we are about to go in balls deep into 1983 this coming Monday, August 28 on our JoBlo Horror Originals YouTube channel.
A series of this ilk doesn’t happen by itself, it takes an army of producers, writers, editors and our sole narrator to make the magic happens. So we thought it would be dandy to get our core staff to share with you their 10 favorite (not best) horror movies from the 80’s. Yes, it was tough on all of us to pick just 10 – but we knocked a few back and did what we could. Scroll down and peep our choices!

Earlier this week, we were devastated to hear that Paul Reubens, the actor and comedian best known for playing the character Pee-wee Herman, had passed away at the age of 70, following a six year private battle with cancer. Among the many people who took to social media to mourn the loss of Reubens was special makeup effects artist Mark Shostrom, whose long list of credits includes The Slumber Party Massacre, The Beastmaster, The Mutilator, From Beyond, Witchboard, Prince of Darkness, Poltergeist III, Phantasm II and III, the first three Nightmare on Elm Street movies, and Evil Dead II. And while paying tribute to Reubens, Shostrom revealed that an iconic effect from Evil Dead II drew inspiration from an iconic effect in Pee-wee’s Big Adventure!
Shostrom said, “Paul Reubens provided huge inspiration for my work on Evil Dead II. I had been watching Pee-wee’s Big Adventure on VHS on repeat while sculpting.

Long before I discovered the joys of horror movies, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a formative obsession of mine. I often wonder if Tmnt and its variety of imaginative creatures served as a gateway to the genre of sorts. Living up to its title, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has the potential to do the same for a new generation.
Whether you’re a genre veteran interested in revisiting thematically similar offerings or a newcomer looking to branch out into some of Tmnt’s inspirations, here are six horror movies to watch after you see Mutant Mayhem.
1. The Fly
Mutant Mayhem villain Superfly is a fresh spin on the classic Tmnt character Baxter Stockman, who debuted in the original Mirage comics and has appeared in many other iterations since, from animated to live action. As a brilliant but mad scientist turned mutant human-fly hybrid, the character was clearly inspired by The Fly.

Shudder is a streaming service that is specifically dedicated to the horror genre, so it’s only fitting that we here on Arrow in the Head should compile a list of the Best Horror Movies on Shudder Right Now. As with all streamers, Shudder has movies that come and go on a regular basis, but if you head over there today here are some of the best movies you can find on the service:
Night Of The Living Dead (1968)
Yes, George A. Romero’s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead seems to be available on nearly every streaming service there is, and that’s because the movie is in the public domain due to the copyright notice accidentally being left off the film print. A new episode of the Revisited video series went online over the weekend, and with this one we took a look back at one of the most highly regarded horror movies ever made, the 1973 classic The Exorcist (watch it Here)! To find out what we had to say about The Exorcist, check out the video embedded above.
Based on a novel by William Peter Blatty (pick up a copy Here), who also wrote the screenplay, The Exorcist was directed by William Friedkin and tells the following story: One of the most profitable horror movies ever made, this tale of an exorcism is based loosely on actual events. When young Regan starts acting odd — levitating, speaking in tongues — her worried mother seeks medical help, only to hit a dead end. A local priest, however, thinks the girl may be seized by the devil. The priest makes a request to perform an exorcism,...

Let’s think for just a moment on the horror genre in the 1980s. Where does your mind take you? For me, slasher movies were the go-to genre of the decade, specifically the early years. They were flawed… yes, and mostly pretty bad, subjectively. But at the same time, they’re fun little thrill rides which deliver on the promise of the tropes and rules one would expect from these films. They all for the most part follow the same formula we are all too familiar with. You have your sex-crazed teenagers who spend their weekend fueling themselves with red cups of beer, doing drugs, and engaging in the occasional premarital sex. All the while there is a crazed killer on the loose,...

After growing up within the Child’s Play franchise, director Kyra Elise Gardner (daughter of special effects artist Tony Gardner) offers a unique perspective on Chucky’s reign of terror in Living with Chucky. The feature documentary will stream exclusively on Screambox on 4th April 2023. It will also be available on VOD platforms the same day via Cinedigm and Bloody Disgusting before hitting Blu-ray on 18th April 2023.
Chucky creator Don Mancini and franchise alumni Brad Dourif, Jennifer Tilly, Fiona Dourif, Alex Vincent, Christine Elise, Billy Boyd, John Waters, Tony Gardner, David Kirshner, and more spill their guts along with notable fans like Marlon Wayans, Abigail Breslin, Lin Shaye, and Dan Povenmire, among others. Storming into pop culture in 1988, the killer doll known as Chucky proved that Child’s Play was anything but. It went on to spawn six sequels, a TV series, a reboot, comic books, a video game, and extensive merchandise.

The slasher film. Across several decades, one of the most dominating sub-genres in the entire horror sphere. From the beginning days of the formative slashers in the 1970s, all the way to today’s reboots, sequels, and fresh originals. From classic icons such as Michael Myers to modern killers like Mia Goth’s Pearl. The slasher truly lives forever, proving it’s always in fashion.
One of the most unique slashers is a movie that just celebrated its 40th anniversary. A movie that spawned a series of films written and directed entirely by women, a rarity in the genre.
That movie? The Slumber Party Massacre.
Released in 1982, The Slumber Party Massacre started life as an on-the-nose horror movie that would essentially be a send-up of genre tropes. This original screenplay was titled Sleepless Nights and was authored by famed feminist writer Rita Mae Brown as a parody of the often dominated slasher film genre,...

If there's a holiday, there's probably a horror movie about it. Halloween is obviously the top dog, with plenty of solid options even beyond John Carpenter's seminal classic, but it doesn't stand alone. There are lots of Christmas-themed horror flicks, too, including enduring favorites like "Black Christmas" and "Krampus." The Fourth of July practically mandates a rewatch of "I Know What You Did Last Summer." Valentine's Day, of course, has its own early-'00s slasher.
Yet, likely by dint of its proximity to Christmas, filmmakers have gone cold turkey when it comes to serving up a heaping platter of Thanksgiving-related horror. It's inexplicable, too, given just how fruitful — and terrifying — the thought of family members both old and new gathering in one place really is. Dramas like "Pieces of April" and comedies like "The Oath" relish in Thanksgiving discomfort, but the horror genre is strangely resistant.

One of my great memories from the, put one way, debatable year of 2020 was Criterion Channel’s “’70s Horror,” a program that did what it said on the tin while offering discoveries aplenty—Texas Chain Saw next to Let’s Scare Jessica to Death, Deathdream given equal prominence as The Wicker Man. It is of course a delight to see they’re picking up their own baton with next month’s “’80s Horror,” which again runs a canon-to-obscurity gamut. Scanners, Near Dark, and Prince of Darkness will of course appear, but I’d just as soon direct people to Wolfen, Society, and The Keep—which made my jaw drop just a bit, given how averse Michael Mann seems towards any exhibition of it.
Criterion have released a nifty trailer encapsulating the spooks and scares to come. Find it below, as well as the full list of titles and more on the Criterion Channel.

I own a frankly absurd amount of movies (roughly 5000), and I’m subscribed to several streaming services. In short, I have a lot of films that I haven’t got around to watching immediately to hand. For the past decade plus I’ve been too busy in October to indulge in the Shocktober horror marathons that a lot of my friends do, but as I’m not doing the London Film Festival as press this year, I thought I’d take the opportunity to delve into the back catalogue of horror I’ve had waiting to be watched.
From September 15th until October 30th, I’ll be watching at least one new to me horror film every day, and providing collections of capsule reviews week by week. On Halloween itself, as ever, I’m planning an all day marathon of some of my favourite horror films.

The year 2021 was huge for pop-icon Britney Spears. It was the year she become engaged to her longtime boyfriend Sam Asghari and the year her 13-years-long conservatorship - which gave her father, Jamie Spears, control over almost every aspect of her life - was terminated. Now, just four months into 2022, the star is looking to have an even more exciting year, as she just announced she is expecting her first child with Asghari.
Spears and Asghari initially met back in 2016 on the set of her music video for "Slumber Party" and, since then, they've been happily attached at the hip. While the pair always kept things fun on social media, the revelations of 2021 gave light to challenges the pair were experiencing quietly behind the scenes amid Spears's restrictive conservatorship and her battle to end it. In the case of Spears and Asghari, it's not a cliché to say they've stuck together through thick and thin.

Happy Friday, everyone! This time last week, we celebrated the amazing independent horror films that were released throughout the 1970s, so it only makes sense that we shift our focus today to all the great indie genre movies and moviemakers that helped make the ’80s one of the most unforgettable decades in horror.
Much like the 1970s, we saw a handful of eventual Masters of Horror establish themselves as genre storytellers on the indie side of things throughout the ’80s. On the East Coast, we saw an explosion of creativity come out of New York City with filmmakers such as William Lustig, Frank Henenlotter, Larry Fessenden, and Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman making their feature debuts in the world of horror during the ’80s. And even though Troma Entertainment was founded in 1974, the company really came into its own during the 1980s as well. The indie studio founded by the aforementioned...

Welp, 2021 was certainly a year. There was a lot of good (Movies! TV! Books! Random Horror Awesomeness!) and a lot of bad (pretty much everything else), but we made it to 2022, and I am excited for all that’s to come in the next 12 months (at least when it comes to stuff going on in horror). Over the course of last year, I think formally reviewed over 60 films, did interviews for at least 20 other projects beyond those reviewed films, relaunched Indie Horror Month in April, and even did a ton of other features and articles on Daily Dead as well.
Suffice to say, 2021 was pretty darned busy for me on the writing front and because there was so much content that I absolutely adored, I decided that for my favorites list this time around, I wanted to do things a bit differently because if I dive into every single thing...

Rebooting the 1982 slasher horror, director Danishka Esterhazy tweaks the genre’s shocks in a movie that’s mostly decent fun
The 1982 video-nasty classic The Slumber Party Massacre – a confection of polyester sleepwear, orangey fake blood and phallic construction equipment with remarkable battery longevity, directed by Amy Jones – gets a reboot for a new generation with this, along with a more euphonious title, shorn of the definitive article. This time the director is Danishka Esterhazy, whose previous feature, The Banana Splits Movie, similarly retweaked a near-forgotten property from the pop-culture landfill. After an 80s-set prologue that establishes driller killer Russ Thorn’s (Rob van Vuuren) stalk-and-skewer modus operandi, we catch up with lone survivor Trish Deveraux (Schelaine Bennett) in the present day. Trish is now a paranoid parent, worriedly sending off her only daughter Dana off for a rustic overnighter with her friends. Will history repeat itself?

Danishka Esterhazy is helping to usher in another era of horror.
First, she took a beloved '70s children's program and turned it into a tongue-in-cheek nightmare with The Banana Splits Movie. Now she's at it again, taking what is widely known as the first feminist horror movie, Slumber Party Massacre, giving it the 21st-century treatment.
Why she did it is simple. "I am a fan of '80s horror and I am a fan of slasher movies. They were definitely the kind of movie I'd watch at sleepovers with my friends as a teen girl."
In 1982, Rita Mae Brown wrote Slumber Party Massacre, which Amy Holden Jones (The Resident) directed. Both were working with some of the industry's top behind-the-screen talent, and their intent was to shine a light on the misogynistic qualities of horror.
Danishka says it was a little later in life that she watched the original franchise,...

Syfy is bringing us an updated classic, and we couldn't be more excited!
The '80s were all about cheesy horror, and The Slumber Party Massacre is about as cheesy as it gets.
Thankfully, some things never get old -- horror, cheese, and coeds among them.
This movie has deep roots that appeal to the best TV Fanatics around, as the original was directed by Amy Holden Jones, who you know as The Resident showrunner.
This time out, hot on the heels of SurrealEstate, Danishka Esterhazy directs, so we know the remake is in good hands.
Airing on Saturday, October 16 at 9/8c, this new contemporary twist-filled reimagining of the 1982 slasher cult classic arrives just in time for Halloween.
Don't you just hate when a slumber party turns into a bloodbath, and a psychotic serial killer wielding a power drill disrupts the fun??

Look, those of you who know me likely already know why I have an affinity for New World Pictures (hint: they’re responsible for a movie I think is really “swellraiser”). But I’ve always wondered what kind of film studio had the gumption to produce a movie at the height of the AIDS crisis that was directed by an openly gay man and revels in kink, incorporates copious amounts of blood, and dares us to indulge in our darker nature? It turns out that for a studio like New World Pictures, this tact was pretty much par for the course. New World’s history is all about taking chances, an approach that would ultimately lead to its downfall.
New World was founded by Roger Corman and his brother Gene in 1970. They distributed their first film, the biker flick Angels Die Hard, in June of that year, but their first...

Los Angeles, March 7: Actor Sam Asghari, who has been dating pop star Britney Spears since the two shot for Spears' music video for "Slumber Party" in 2016, has said that he wasn't interested to be in the music video initially.

I didn't want to do more and be known as a music video actor, but a good friend of mine was working on a project and they referred me to the team that was picking out the leading role for 'Slumber Party'," the 27-year-old said in an interview with Forbes, reports People magazine.

In the terrifying new online seance chiller Host, a group of female friends are left to deal with a malevolent spirit, while the sole male cast member runs shrieking into the night. Here’s a collection of some of the best fright flicks featuring fantastic female ensemble casts. Ladies, your time is now!
