Next month will mark the return of New York City’s Quad Cinema, a theater reshaped and rebranded as a proper theater via the resources of Charles S. Cohen, head of the distribution outfit Cohen Media Group. While we got a few hints of the line-up during the initial announcement, they’ve now unveiled their first full repertory calendar, running from April 14th through May 4th, and it’s an embarassment of cinematic riches.
Including the previously revealed Lina Wertmüller retrospective, one inventive series that catches our eye is First Encounters, in which an artist will get to experience a film they’ve always wanted to see, but never have, and in which you’re invited to take part. The first match-ups in the series include Kenneth Lonergan‘s first viewing Edward Yang‘s Yi Yi, Noah Baumbach‘s first viewing of Withnail and I, John Turturro‘s first viewing of Pather Panchali,...

Hillary Rodham Clinton gave Jon Stewart no hints about whether she will run for president, but acknowledged during Tuesday's taping of The Daily Show that the speculation surrounding her possible candidacy has become "a cottage industry."
Stewart introduced Clinton by saying, "She's here solely for one reason: to publicly and definitively declare her candidacy for president of the United States ... I think."
That proved not to be true.
The two moved on to a series of national and international issues Clinton faced as secretary of state, including the violence and tension between Israel and the Palestinians.

When "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening and longtime producer/director/animator David Silverman delivered the keynote talk at an annual entertainment symposium hosted by UCLA Law School back in March, they ended up learning an important lesson of their own: don't joke around when it comes to movie news, and especially not about sequels to a movie that grossed over $500 million at the box office.
After Silverman's offhand remark that a follow-up to 2007's "The Simpsons Movie" wouldn't happen for "maybe another 10, 15 years" popped up in The Hollywood Reporter's recap of the event, it took on a life of its own. And, as usually happens in the game of movie rumour telephone, went from an off-the-cuff joke to a genuine projection.
Speaking with HuffPost Canada TV in advance of his own keynote appearance at the second annual Toronto Animation Arts Festival International, Silverman wanted to good-naturedly correct the speculation about his sequel "prediction.

In “Who Are You, Really?” the sixth season premiere of True Blood, we get one semi-major death, a coupla big entrances (ack! — it’s The Hitcher!), a werewolf ménage à trois and the perfect new nickname for the post-Lilith merger Bill: Billith. (Well done on that one, Pam. As usual.) So what do you say? Shall we dive in?
The Great Escape | Picking up right where Season 5 left off, Sookie, Eric, Jessica, Pam, Tara, Nora and Jason beat a hasty retreat just as Billith blows Authority HQ to smithereens and flies off like — as Jason so eloquently puts it — a “nekkid evil Superman.

This episode, perfectly written by the fantastic Jordan Harper, marks 4 out of 4 for season 5 of The Mentalist so far. It’s the second of these opening episodes that I want to praise for being different and highly emotional, the first being ‘Devil’s Cherry’, as ‘Blood Feud’ gave us an interesting case and an epic, cathartic conclusion to the plot between Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) and his criminal father (William Forsythe).
Let’s get the case out of the way first. A man is found shot dead at the same scene in which we find Steven Rigsby seriously wounded. It turns out it may have been a result of a long-time feud between two warring gangs in the area, the Low Riders and the Overtons. Seeing Jane (Simon Baker) interact with people whilst outside of his comfort zone is always very fun. Case in point: Jane going...

As Jane said at the end of "Blood Feud," he'd rather regret taking action than regret taking no action at all. Did The Mentalist make the right call when he put Rigsby in the position to take his revenge and is that actually what Rigsby did?
I was thrilled to see Agent Laroche back. His contentious relationship with Jane and the Cbi team has always been entertaining. This time there seemed to be an added edge of intensity to their exchanges.
I've never felt much sympathy for Rigsby when it came to his violent criminal of a father. Perhaps I was too harsh but I've always believed that Wayne didn't know when to walk away and let Daddy fend for himself, especially when covering for him put Cho's career in danger. For once this storyline made me feel the pull of family ties.
Although his father's reasoning was warped, in...

This weeks episode of The Mentalist, ‘Not One Red Cent’, served as a well crafted and very enjoyable stand-alone after last weeks very different, very emotional ‘Devil’s Cherry’. Due to unforeseen circumstances I was not able to review that episode. Needless to say, it was a 5 star 40+ minutes of television.
The opening and set up for the case-of-the-week involved Jane (Simon Baker) visiting a store to get his shoes repaired. For those of you who may not have noticed, Jane’s shoes are really, Really old. I loved his awkward relationship with the old cobbler, who feels faint and has to be laid to the ground in Jane’s arms after the bank robbers across the street fire bullets in their direction. This also means Jane’s shoes are unavailable to him for the entire episode, allowing him to wear a pair of ‘loaners’, in...

It's about to get very personal on The Mentalist.
On next Sunday's "Blood Feud," William Forsythe guest stars as Wayne's father, Steve Rigsby. Look for the character to be founded wounded at a crime scene and for the team to wonder whether the incident is related to a long-standing small town gang war.
Watch the official CBS promo for the installment now and then check out our review of the latest Mentalist episode...

Hoover and the movies go back a long way. Sadly, Clint Eastwood's new biopic doesn't add much to that history
The one noteworthy thing about J Edgar is that it's a sympathetic, entirely non-homophobic gay love story directed by Clint Eastwood. It might even have extra resonance if you recollect that gay kid in the park in Dirty Harry, fluttering his eyelashes at a clearly repulsed Detective Callahan and piping, "My name is Alice, and I've been known to take a dare!"
This one pleasing development aside, J Edgar marks another point on the downward trajectory of Eastwood's recent directorial career: The Changeling, Invictus, Hereafter – it's all painful, rickety stuff. This murky and uninvolving biopic half hero-worships and half hates the late FBI Director (systematised fingerprinting – yay! "There is no organised crime in the USA" – boo!), seeing him as a deeply closeted, mother-fixated control freak. Hoover's deepening, marriage-like...
