1954's "The Creature From The Black Lagoon" was the last gasp of Universal Pictures' black-and-white horror heyday. Pivoting away from literary adaptations towards something more resembling contemporary man-in-suit monster movies, "Black Lagoon" introduced one last staple of the Universal Monster line-up: The Gill-man. A missing link in the evolutionary chain, the amphibian man has the same mix of terror and lovelorn pathos as his monstrous brethren.
It's not quite the pop-culture staple that "Dracula" and "Frankenstein" are, but "The Creature From The Black Lagoon" has been reimagined many times (most famously in 2017 with Guillermo del Toro's Best Picture-winning oddball romance "The Shape of Water" — it was almost black-and-white like "Black Lagoon" too). Now a new comic book starring the Gill-Man comes forth from Skybound Entertainment, boasting a title that belongs to a forgotten Universal Horror picture: "The Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives!"
Skybound isn't just revitalizing "The Transformers" and "G.I. Joe.

Transformers One follows the story of the young bots on the planet Cybertron. Thor actor Chris Hemsworth voices the role of Orion Pax / Optimus Prime while Godzilla x Kong actor Brian Tyree Henry voices D-16 / Megatron. With no humans on Cybertron to deal with, the Transformers One team put extra effort into the world-building of the series. Director Josh Cooley admitted that the world-building of their film took inspiration from Denis Villeneuve’s Dune.
Transformers One will reunite Marvel stars Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson
The film reunites Hemsworth with his The Avengers co-star Scarlett Johansson, who voices the role of Elita. Other cast members of the film include Keegan-Michael Key as Bumblebee, Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime, and Steve Buscemi as the antagonist.

Since it began in 1984, 40 years ago this year, The Transformers has always had an uncomfortably close relationship with a particularly gross, child-exploiting branch of capitalism — the one that creates cartoon mascots who are driven insane by how delicious sugary cereal is, the one that puts prizes in Happy Meal boxes, and, of course, the one that creates entire TV shows and movies built around selling toys like G.I. Joe or He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Like The Transformers, those shows were all part of an '80s cartoon boom triggered by the way Ronald Reagan’s far-right FCC decided to dramatically roll back protections against advertisements directed at children.

Since 2007, the "Transformers" movies have been A) Primarily set on Earth (excepting prologues in "Dark of the Moon" and "Bumblebee" showing the war for planet Cybertron) and B) Live-action, using CGI to integrate the Autobots and Decepticons into real settings. Director Josh Cooley ("Toy Story 4") is about to change that with "Transformers One." /Film's Ryan Scott, who attended the Paramount Pictures panel at CinemaCon 2024, got an early look at the upcoming animated movie.
"Transformers One" is a prequel set before the war when the Autobots and Decepticons were still one people. Since the movie is set entirely on Cybertron with only robot characters, it makes sense to tell the story through animation. "Transformers" is no stranger to prequels -- check out the comic series "The War Within," High Moon Studios' video game duology "War for Cybertron" and "Fall of Cybertron," and more. Still, this is new territory for the films.

The realms of G.I. Joe and Transformers have long captured the imaginations of fans. While both franchises have had crossover in Marvel comics, a full-fledged cinematic meeting has remained a dream.
One of the most famous crossover events was in a comic book series by Marvel (1987) called G.I. Joe and the Transformers, where Autobots end up working with G.I. Joe.

However, a recent fan-made concept trailer of Transformers: War of the Beasts got people all hyped. It showed G.I. Joe teaming up with the Autobots to fight Unicron, the big bad.

Mark Wahlberg has been in the industry for almost 3 decades and has been in some of the most acclaimed films in Hollywood. Wahlberg has dabbled in various genres and has shown his versatility as an actor. Films like Boogie Nights, Fear, Invincible, The Departed, Fighter, Lone Survivor, etc. have shown that he does not like to typecast himself into a specific type of performance.
Mark Wahlberg as Marcus Luttrell in 2013’s Lone Survivor
In the 2010s, Wahlberg started venturing into blockbusters and family-friendly projects like The Transformers franchise, more recently with Uncharted, and The Family Plan. "X-Men '97" is bringing the marvelous mutant heroes back to the small screen like they never left it, picking up right after the original series finale, "Graduation Day." Since that aired, the show's '90s setting has gone from contemporary to period piece.
The long-awaited trailer for "X-Men '97" debuted on February 15, 2024, and there's plenty to discuss even with less than 2 minutes of footage. For one, we've now finally seen the series' animation style, which brings modern shading and three-dimensionality to the original's classic cartoon look.
Much of the original voice cast is back (even if they only get a line each to show it), while Ray Chase and Matthew Waterson sound uncanny as Cyclops and Magneto. I'll admit I've been skeptical of "X-Men '97" before now — I've never been a huge fan of the original (the production values were quite low and often off-putting). Plus, the X-Men's world is so vast,...

Alan Moore and Brian Bolland's 1988 graphic novel "The Killing Joke" is one of the most famous Batman stories. It's also undergone a more adversarial reevaluation in the 21st century due to its exploitative depiction of violence against women; the Joker shooting and disabling Barbara Gordon is a textbook case of a woman in a refrigerator.
Despite the ickiness, I still think it's a damn good comic. Bolland's artwork is gorgeous and the book interrogates Batman and the Joker's shared dynamic with depth every Batman writer since has been chasing.
In "The Killing Joke," the Joker abducts Commissioner Gordon and tries to push him to his psychological breaking point. As the Joker remembers it, he was once a regular man who had a really bad day that convinced him to laugh at how awful the world is. But his hypothesis is wrong; Gordon doesn't crack and Batman suggests the...

Since her debut in the 1986 animated "Transformers" movie, Arcee has been one of the most famous Autobots of all. The default girl Transformer, Arcee rocks a feminine pink-and-white color scheme and either a sports car or motorcycle vehicle mode. She's also had a bit of a rough history.
Arcee was considered for the 2007 "Transformers" film (check out concept art of her here), but like a few other characters, she was cut during development. Co-writer Roberto Orci explained the removal to IGN: "The idea of a female Transformer needs its own explanation, and there just wasn't going to be enough time."
The sequel, "Revenge of the Fallen," featured Arcee, but in one of its many faults, it didn't do much with her. Arcee is one of a trio of female motorcycle transformers; she's painted pink while her sisters are blue and purple (media differs on if the trio are separate...

The late Len Wein was one of the most prolific comic book writers of his day. Like many of his contemporaries (especially Marv Wolfman and Gerry Conway), he bounced back and forth between the "Big Two" comic companies, Marvel and DC. Wein left his mark at both, co-creating characters like Swamp Thing and Lucius Fox at DC and the next generation of X-Men at Marvel.
However, his most famous creation is without a doubt Wolverine. Lein worked with then Marvel Editor-In-Chief Roy Thomas and artist John Romita Sr.; the trio debuted Logan in 1974's "Incredible Hulk" issue #180 (written by Wein). In creating Wolverine, Wein wanted to give whoever wrote "X-Men" next a new mutant character. As it turns out, that writer was Wein himself when he crafted "Giant-Size X-Men" #1 with artist Dave Cockrum the following year. Wein eventually ceded the ongoing "X-Men" series to writer Chris Claremont, but...

To talk about Peter Cullen's voice acting career is to take a trip through the last five decades of mainstream U.S. animation. The man has lent his voice to so many noteworthy cartoon series that it boggles the mind, including "Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo," "The Smurfs," "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends," "Voltron: Defender of the Universe," "Alvin and the Chipmunks," "Muppet Babies," "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers," and "Invincible." But one cannot even begin to do justice to his body of work without touching on the iconic character that he's voiced across multiple animated shows and feature films for nearly 40 years now. Truly, at this point, Cullen is all but synonymous with his onscreen counterpart: Eeyore.
After debuting as the Autobots' intrepid leader in "The Transformers" in 1984, Cullen took over voicing the most relatable resident of the Hundred Acre Wood from the late Ralph Wright (who voiced...

This author is old enough to remember the death of Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen), the leader of the heroic Autobots in Nelson Shin's 1986 animated sci-fi epic "The Transformers: The Movie." Coming in the middle of a successful run on television, "The Movie" aimed to expand the series into a full-blown space opera, complete with interplanetary settings, all-new characters, and a massive mechanical cosmic deity played by Orson Welles (his final work before his death in October of 1985). Many fans of the TV series -- and they were legion -- flocked to theaters to see their favorite transforming robot characters wail on each other in a cinematic context.
It should be recalled that "The Transformers" was one of many 1980s TV shows that functioned explicitly as an advertising exercise. The Transformers were gimmicky toys -- puzzles that could be manipulated from robot shapes into cars and back --...

August isn't especially famous for its great movies. As months go, the eighth one on the calendar has often been a bit of a wasteland for Hollywood, as blockbusters peter off, kids have a lot less free time and money, and studio executives need to find somewhere to dump their proverbial dead bodies.
If you want a good example, you can pretty much throw a dart at any year after "Jaws" popularized the concept of summer blockbuster season. For example, let's take a look at 1993. 30 years ago, August was a month for dreck comedies like "Son of the Pink Panther," family film misfires like "Father Hood" and "Surf Ninjas," and the weird-ass "Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday."
But then again, there are exceptions to every rule. There were also a few excellent motion pictures in August 1993. The increasingly timeless classic "The Fugitive" came out that month, along with...

Have you ever noticed Optimus Prime in Michael Bay's "Transformers" films isn't really all that heroic? To be fair, he doesn't start that way in Bay's original 2007 "Transformers" film. There, he tries to keep the fights between the Autobots and Decepticons away from densely-populated areas and, when that's not possible, makes an active effort to minimize casualties. Optimus even implores Sam Witwicky (Shia Labeouf) to place the AllSpark (ie. the film's MacGuffin) in his chest during the climax, knowing it will kill him but will also prevent his arch-nemesis Megatron and the other Decepticons from wreaking havoc on the universe.
Of course, Sam sticks the AllSpark in Megatron's chest to kill him instead, and Optimus and the Autobots return in the 2009 sequel, "Revenge of the Fallen," now working with humanity to hunt down the remaining Decepticons. By this point, however, Optimus has basically morphed into Judge Dredd, anointing himself judge,...

Comic-Con International kicked off last week at the San Diego Convention Center with fewer actors and writers than anticipated.
As usual, the convention was filled with famous comic characters, including Optimus Prime from The Transformers and Optimus Primal from Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
Although the event continued its typical flow, it was missing many other characters and famous faces attendees would have had the opportunity to meet.
Last month, in abiding by the strikes by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild — American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), most media companies were reportedly bowing out of the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con (Sdcc). Those companies include Universal Pictures, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, Sony Pictures and Netflix.

In June, “The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment recently scored two highly coveted comic book licenses from Hasbro, “The Transformers” and “G.I. Joe,” with both planned for release this fall as part of the new “Energon Universe.”
Kirkman won’t have any input into future movies based on “G.I. Joe,” but given the difficulty that franchise has had on the big screen lately, we couldn’t help but ask Kirkman for his take now that he’s got a toehold on the universe.
“There’s certainly good aspects to the, the ‘Snake Eyes’ movie, and the other two ‘GI Joe’ movies, I think that maybe didn’t perform in the box office as much as Hasbro and Paramount would have liked,” Kirkman said during the Q&a portion of the “Transformers & G.I. When we first meet Noah Diaz (Anthony Ramos), he’s a tech genius struggling to find a job and a purpose. By the end of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, he’s found a purpose by playing an important role in helping the Autobots and Maximals stop the Terrorcons from bringing the planet-destroying Unicron to Earth. But he still doesn’t have a job. That is until he’s approached by a man who knows what Noah has done for the planet and wants to recruit him. The name on the man’s business card? G.I. Joe.
By this point, shared universe teases such as these have become commonplace in blockbuster films, often pointing to larger franchises that nobody really wants (R.I.P. Dark Universe). But the G.I. Joe reveal in the latest Transformers might have a...

The Super Bowl teaser trailer for "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" served double duty as a Porsche commercial. That's because Mirage, one of the film's new Autobots, transforms into a silver-colored 964-Gen Porsche 911 with a blue racing stripe running down the middle. This car choice is era-appropriate -- "Rise of the Beasts" takes place in 1994, the year this Porsche model ceased production after debuting in 1989.
Prominently featured in both trailers so far -- they open with the Porsche, in fact -- it looks like Mirage will take over Bumblebee's usual role as the Autobot friend of the human lead. In this case, the primary human is called Noah and is played by Anthony Ramos ("In the Heights").
The trailers also indicate how the two meet. Noah stumbles on Mirage chilling in a New York City parking garage. After Noah enters the "car," it begins driving itself. The two are caught in a police chase,...

"The Transformers: The Movie" exists in the shadow of "Star Wars." The young Autobot Hot Rod's ascension to Rodimus Prime parallels Luke Skywalker becoming a Jedi, Arcee's head is modeled after Leia's bun hairstyle, and the film's Orson Welles-voiced villain, Unicron, is a mechanical planet that eats other planets — it's like the Death Star, but if it were a Transformer.
"Star Wars" didn't become the media franchise of the world because of its box office haul, but largely because of merchandise sales. Toy companies made a killing on "Star Wars" action figures, among them Hasbro, owner of "Transformers." “G.I. Joe is the codename for America’s daring, highly trained, special mission force.” So declares the voiceover in the theme song for G.I. Joe, the cartoon show that dominated after-school televisions in the 1980s. And by that criteria, Channing Tatum seems like the perfect choice to play Duke, leader of the Joes. Is he highly trained? Of course! Have you seen Step Up or Magic Mike? Is he daring? Anyone who caught his cameo in This is the End would give a resounding “yes”!
But the song also tells us that G.I. Joe “never gives up” and is “always there.” On that account, Tatum might fall a little bit short.
Recently, Tatum agreed to strap on a lie detector and answer questions for Vanity Fair. And to test the actor’s resolve, Vanity Fair went right for the tough questions: “You played Duke in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

Nicola Peltz Beckham wants the world to know that's it's okay not to feel okay. The Transformers star, 27, was unafraid to get vulnerable in a poignant Instagram post about how she handles difficult days and people who try to bring her down. Alongside her message, Nicola included a series of photos that feature her teary-eyed in bed with a stuffed animal. "Sometimes I find it hard to show the sad bits of me," she captioned her Aug. 5 post. "Growing up with seven siblings and two very strong parents, made me really tough, they hammered it into me to not let people bring me down or hurt my heart. It made me put such a wall up to protect myself especially in this...

Fox’s Tubi streaming service has nabbed streaming rights to the 1990s children’s hit “Barney & Friends” starting April 9.
In a deal with 9 Story Distribution, Tubi will have rights to the show’s first six seasons. It will become the exclusive home to Seasons 7-9 of “Barney,” which features future stars including Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato. Tubi added Seasons 10-12 non-exclusively to its library.
The purple dinosaur made a splash with the preschool set in its 1992 debut.
Tubi has emphasized children’s programming to draw viewers to the ad-supporting free streamer. “Barney & Friends” joins “Naruto,” “Transformers: Generation 1” and “Garfield and Friends” on the Tubi slate as well as content from famous franchises such as Scooby Doo, VeggieTales, Batman, The Wiggles and Lego Ninjago. As the old saying goes, you can make it fast, you can make it cheap, and you can make it good, but you can’t have all three. In the case of STXfilms and Alibaba’s UglyDolls, it was the first two points making for a disastrous start at the box office of $8.5M for this reported $45M-$53M net production, intended to launch the mini-major’s foray into the feature animation space.
Based on this weekend’s box office results, it’s clear that the doll line isn’t as universal as originally perceived by Stx. Stx eventually got ahold of UglyDolls and believed that the property would resonate over in China. While the pic has yet to lock down a release date there, box office history for family pics in China is against UglyDolls: family fare under-indexes there, with even Pixar films challenged.

The 1986 animated film Transformers: The Movie is the best Transformers movie that has been made. Sure, it scarred us for life when all of our favorite characters were brutally killed off in the first 20 minutes of the film, but that's part of what made it so great and memorable. I actually got to attend the premiere of the screening when it was first released and I remember bawling when Optimus Prime died!
Now fans will get a chance to see it in theaters again or for the first time thanks to Fathom Events, Hasbro Studios and Shout! Factory. They've come together to bring the film back to theaters for one night only in September, and it has been remastered in high definition!

When people think of the Transformers, they don’t always think about the movies. Younger individuals may not have anything else to base their thought processes on, but older people likely remember the cartoon that aired roughly 30 years ago, give or take a couple of years. Many people were avid fans of that cartoon and openly admit that the whole franchise has lost a step since the movies came out. Recently, someone that is obviously a huge fan of the original Transformers decided to painstakingly recreate the intro to season one with stop motion, utilizing toys from Hasbro and other

Disney’s dormant film franchise, The Rocketeer, will be revived as an animated series, starring a female hero, on Disney Junior.
The Rocketeer franchise is ready for another liftoff more than a quarter of a century after it was grounded. While rumblings in recent years have teased a reboot movie and even a straight sequel to the original 1991 film, Disney’s family-friendly genre-mixing action brand will soon manifest as an animated series on the Mouse’s youth-aimed cable platform, Disney Junior.
Disney has announced that production on The Rocketeer animated series has already commenced. The franchise-reviving cartoon will – apropos to its platform – be aimed at young children and families, targeting a release in 2019. The story will draw inspiration from The Rocketeer comic book series of Dave Stevens, which adhered to the original film. However, the series will follow the rocket pack-powered exploits of a young female hero.

We've lost a lot of inspirational figures in the horror genre this past year, including the great Bernie Wrightson, a brilliant artist, co-creator of the Swamp Thing and passionate fan of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Following his seminal illustrated version of Shelley's Frankenstein that was initially released in 1983, Wrightson recently teamed up with Steve Niles for a comic book series called Frankenstein, Alive, Alive, and Idw Publishing announced that the final issue of the series will be released in January, with artist Kelley Jones stepping in to finish what Bernie started, as per the legendary artist's wishes.

As previously reported, the world of R.L. Stine's Goosebumps will come to life in comic book form this Halloween season, but the frightening, nostalgic fun will continue on the paneled page next year, too, as Idw Publishing has announced another three-issue Goosebumps comic book story, "Download And Die!", that will be released in 2018:

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Who is your favorite voice actor for animated characters on TV? Why?
Dave Trumbore (@DrClawMD), Collider
My knee-jerk reaction was either Kevin Conroy or Mark Hamill for their roles as Batman/Bruce Wayne and The Joker, respectively, because “Batman: The Animated Series” is always on my mind. But thinking a moment more, my favorite voice actor (and arguably the best in the biz) is Frank Welker.

His name might not be a household one, but with over 800 credits and nearly 50 years in the industry, Welker’s voice definitely is.

The Transformers mythology is an eons-long inter-galactic tale that is rich in its own history. We have the rise of intelligent techno-organic lifeforms, a split between rival points of view, and a struggle for supremacy. All along the way, for reasons that are never spelled out in their history, Earth has been of particular interest to the Autobots and Decepticons.
That much has powered countless comics, animated episodes, and four live-action feature films. Rather than marvel at the wonders of the cosmos or reveal to us why the planet is important, the fifth installment, The Last Knight, retrofit the Knights of the Round Table to an already convoluted and, frankly, boring film series. This film, out now on disc from Paramount Home Entertainment, more or less retreads the first four films, mixing returning humans and Transformers and adding in a few new figures to freshen things, and yet, no one cares.

Who knew coloring could so spooky?! From horror writer and illustrator Alan Robert comes The Beauty of Horror II: Ghouliana's Creepatorium, a new coloring book from Idw Publishing. As the title suggests, this coloring book is the continuation of Ghouliana's attempts to get colorers to unleash her fiendish spell, and we have release details and information on when and where you can meet Robert at autograph signings.
Press Release: New York, NY (September 19, 2017) - Life of Agony's Alan Robert has established himself as a prolific horror illustrator & writer over the last several years. Since 2010, Robert has created several award-winning titles through Idw Publishing (Crawl to Me, Killogy, Wire Hangers, The Shunned One). However, nothing would prepare him for the wild success of his 2016 breakout hit The Beauty of Horror: A GOREgeous Coloring Book. Nerdist hailed it as being "The World's Creepiest Adult Coloring Book" and it was Idw's #2 top-selling book last year.

While talking with writer/director Steve Mitchell about King Cohen: The Wild World of Filmmaker Larry Cohen, his new feature-length documentary that celebrates and explores the decades-spanning career of maverick storyteller Larry Cohen, I had the opportunity to chat about a cult classic that he was involved with over 30 years ago: Jim Wynorski’s Chopping Mall, starring Kelli Maroney, Barbara Crampton, Tony O’Dell, and Russell Todd, who square off against a squad of killer robots inside a shopping mall after hours.
Mitchell wrote the script for Chopping Mall with Wynorski, and the duo collaborated on the film from beginning to end, with Roger Corman’s Concorde-New Horizons handling distribution of the indie horror movie in March of 1986. During our interview, Mitchell discussed his collaborative process with Wynorski, how his experiences on the original Transformers series tied into Chopping Mall, and how surprising it is to him that the film...

The ‘80s are alive on Netflix’s “Glow” – and that means more than just the pulling of large AquaNet hair.
Besides plenty of evidence of the decade in the ring with the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, “Glow” also features ass-kickery set to the totally ‘80s soundtrack from Patti Labelle, Journey, Tears for Fears and others. For viewers who grew up with these artists on cassette, the series has been a heart-pumping aural trip down memory lane.

For any of us who grew up with the Power Rangers (which is likely a majority seeing the number of years they have spanned) have either already seen the movie, or are looking to check it out upon its release on DVD. Below I will give an overview of the movie itself followed by a review of the special features included on the different DVD releases:
The Movie:
The film opens with a large exposition introducing the audience to the teenagers with attitude. Each individual fits some type of the cliche high school student, and while some have been put off by this, it actually is a strong reflection of the 1990's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, which gave a nostalgic feel to a modern take. I did feel that there was a bit too much focus on the "attitude" of each individual. Yes, the original series...

Can we have an old-fashioned focus back on a single movie, rather than trying to hint at six others in the same film?
It was pretty well known that, by the time Warner Bros was getting ready to release Green Lantern in cinemas back in 2011, it’d got to work on a sequel already. It hadn’t actively announced it, but it was common knowledge that a script was being developed which– should the film be a hit – would speed the time it would to take to get a follow up in cinemas. Given that movie studios have gradually been trying to draw back the gap between sequels from three years down to two, this – in Warner Bros’ defence – seemed pragmatic. It wouldn’t, in the scheme of things, cost them a lot of money, and provided they kept things quiet, egg heading towards face could be avoided.

Though some people may be unaware, there’s an awards ceremony held every year to honor the true heroes behind our favorite films: the marketing team. That’s right, the Golden Trailer Awards hand out statues to those who work tirelessly putting together trailers, commercials and posters for hundreds of releases each and every year. And not just in film, but video games and TV, too. It’s an incredibly comprehensive ceremony as well, with awards for a whopping 116 categories. Yes, 116 – though not all of those are given out on stage.
The nominations for the 18th annual edition, set to go down on June 6th at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills, are now in and it seems that Warner Bros. is leading the pack amongst the various studios, scoring an impressive 68 nods in total, 11 of which come from The Lego Batman Movie – the most of any title to be nominated.

The Transformers movies clearly don't need any help when it comes to pulling in major money at the box office, but I think even their biggest fans can agree they need all the help they can get when it comes to explaining those convoluted plots. Paramount has enlisted a bunch of children to explain the films, but with a Drunk History-style twist: Peter Cullen, the man who voices Optimus Prime, swaps in Optimus's voice for the kids', which makes their explanations way funnier. There are a bunch of them in this playlist:

How ‘Smurfs,’ ‘Ghostbusters,’ ‘Ghost in the Shell’ and more are keeping their brands alive after live-action disappointments.
As the live-action Hollywood version of Ghost in the Shell looks to lose $60m after audiences ignored it at the box office last weekend, Japanese publisher Kodansha and anime studio Production I.G. have announced a new animated project based on Masamune Shirow’s classic manga with Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki on board as co-directors.
There are no other details, not even clarification on whether the plan is for a new anime series or feature, and this is something that has been teased since before the new movie’s release, but the timing of the greenlight announcement comes across as damage control, reminding fans that Ghost in the Shell will live on as a property more properly once again.
It’s also interesting that this is happening as the animated feature Smurfs: The Lost Village opens in theaters. Sony...

I didn’t grow up singing “Go, Go Power Rangers!” I didn’t have a favorite ranger. The kid’s TV show turned toy empire was a little after my time, though I did catch parts while channel surfing. At that point I was starting to watch Jackie Chan and 90s action films, so the tepid fight scenes in The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers didn’t quite make an impression. And it’s not like anyone watched the hit series for the character development or acting in the first place.
While Power Rangers borrow the same ideas and similar visuals from the 90s show, the film tries to correct the two elements I just pointed out that the original show lacked. This time around the focus is on the kids and not their stunt doubles in the suits. Five high school kids come together under convenient circumstances one night in a rock quarry.
