Wait a minute, Doc!
Christopher Lloyd recently discussed the initial casting of Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly in “Back to the Future” before Michael J. Fox was cast in the iconic role.
As “Back to the Future” fans may already know, Stoltz filmed for six weeks of production before being let go from the project.
“Stoltz is a wonderful actor. I had no idea the change was coming,” Lloyd recalled to GQ. “One night we were shooting the mall beginning sequence, and we were asked to come to one of the trailers at one o’clock in the morning. [Steven] Spielberg was there and he made the announcement of the change.”
Lloyd was worried about rebuilding a repertoire again with a different McFly, saying, “My biggest fear, because I was really working to get Doc right, I thought, ‘I don’t know if I can get it up to do that again,...

When appraised in the cold light of day, The Wild Life (1984) stands as a fairly minor ’80s teen comedy, lacking the flash of broader, more risqué fare like Porky’s (1982) or the great characters that populated instant classics of the genre like 1982’s Fast Times At Ridgemont High (more on that in a second), Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986), or one of this critic’s personal favorites, Real Genius (1985). So why are we talking about the film’s recent Kino Lorber Blu-ray release at all?
In part, because of the rising talent behind and in front of the camera. The film’s cast includes Chris Penn, Eric Stoltz, Lea Thompson, Jenny Wright, Rick Moranis, Hart Bochner and Randy Quaid (and Heart guitarist Nancy Wilson in a fun cameo). Fresh off the long-awaited arrival of Zack Snyder’s Justice League (a.k.a. the fabled Snyder Cut), HBO Max has no need to appease fandom culture in April 2021. But the streaming service is gonna do it anyway!
The most notable new release for HBO Max this month is the HBO series The Nevers. This show, created by Joss Whedon, is set in a 19th century steampunk London and finds a sizable portion of the population (predominantly women) having been “Touched” by mysterious paranormal powers. There’s an interesting bit of irony at play here, as HBO Max is following up the Snyder Cut with a show created by his original Justice League replacement. Or at least there could have been an interesting bit of irony here, if Whedon had not bowed out from the show and been enthusiastically left out of the marketing material by HBO.

The world’s largest film market is living up to its title with world-record-setting sales. “Detective Chinatown 3” shot past strong competition, as predicted, on its Chinese New Year opening day on Friday, notching a record-breaking $163 million (RMB1.05 billion) in sales despite poor word of mouth.
The sum marks the highest ever opening day tally for a film in a single market, beating out former title-holder “Avengers: Endgame,” which grossed $157 million in North America on its first day in 2019.
“Detective Chinatown” sales on Friday accounted for more than 60% of China’s total new year’s day box office nationwide, which surpassed that of 2019 at $268 million (RMB1.73 billion).
The massive commercial success of director Chen Sicheng’s comedic mystery also propelled Imax to new heights. As of Friday evening local time, the firm “very confidently” projected full-day China earnings of $7.7 million from three films, 18% more than on Chinese New Year’s...

“Boonie Bears: The Wild Life,” the latest feature-length instalment in a long-running Chinese film and TV franchise, is set to open in Japan and Australia. The moves are closely coordinated with the film’s release at the Chinese box office’s annual high point: Lunar New Year.
The seventh feature film in the “Boonie Bears” franchise “Wild Life” will release in mainland Chinese theaters on Friday – going head to head with the likes of “Detective Chinatown 3” and time travel comedy “Hi, Mom.”
Local distributor FaceWhite Entertainment will release it the same day in Japan. China Lion, a company familiar with the practice of multi-territory releasing in the same window as mainland China, will take the film out in Australia a week later (Feb. 19).

Exclusive: Syfy’s Tzgz weekly late-night animation block has given a straight-to-series order to The Summoner, from Stoopid Buddy Stoodios and writer, actor and New Yorker cartoonist Charlie Hankin.
Greenlit for 10 three-minute episodes to premiere next year, The Summoner is a 2D-animated series based on the short film from Hankin about Rory and his challenging roommate. (You can watch it below the story.) Rory, in his 20s and living on his own for the first time, has found himself in a small two-bedroom with the Summoner, a magical alien with the power to summon any object to his present location. This sounds potentially useful, but it isn’t—the Summoner has a tenuous grasp of English and only summons the most useless shit.

Syfy, the channel dedicated to the fiction of science, runs some mind-bending content during prime time. But they shoot short daggers into the brain in the after-hours. Cartoons have taken over the traditional cult movie slot, midnights on Saturday. Tzgz is a late-night block of comedic, animated genre-based programming, made for adults.Syfy’s late-night animation block, Tzgz, is expanding with 3 new series and 2 pilots.
The computer, Hal, on 2001: A Space Odyssey was named after Ibm. Each letter of the villainously nerdy computer’s name is the letter preceding the letter of the giant computer company’s name. Tzgz follows the same tradition, only later. “It Comes After Syfy.”
“What happens when Syfy stays up late? Things. Get. Weird,” Syfy promises in its press statement. “Welcome to Tzgz, where lettuce sings, the undead text, and wizards get high… all before bedtime.”

Matthieu Zeller’s production group Mzm has acquired a majority stake in nWave Studios, the thriving Brussels-based company behind Ben Stassen’s “The Son of Bigfoot” and “Sammy,” among other European animated hits.
Mzm was founded in 2016 by Zeller, a former Studiocanal executive, with the aim to produce and co-produce French and international films and TV series. Mzm, which regroups the production banners Octopolis and Bamboo Film, has joined with Belgium’s leading distribution company, Belga Films, as well as its tax-shelter arm, Belga Films Fund Holding, and regional fund Wallimage Entreprises to form a new entity, Next Wave, to complete the acquisition of nWave.
Since launching Mzm, Zeller has added two new partners: Olivier Sulpice and, most recently, Matthieu Gondinet, who just joined after working at Canal Plus for 15 years. Zeller and Gondinet had collaborated with nWave and its teams over the past years when nWave was partly owned by Studiocanal.

Screenwriter John August — a “Big Fish” BAFTA Award nominee and co-scribe of Disney’s upcoming “Aladdin” remake — is seeking help from fellow cinephiles. He is in the process of compiling a list of popular movies from the past few decades that are not available to legally buy, rent or stream online. The project began Thursday, after August tweeted at Ron Howard asking the whereabout of his fourth directed feature, “Cocoon” (1980):
Hey @RealRonHoward this is crazy. We want to see Cocoon. Do you know why it’s not on iTunes/Amazon/everywhere? https://t.co/lOj8f2u6SX
— John August (@johnaugust) August 9, 2018
An hour later, August solicited other films that Internet-users cannot watch:
I’m curious how many other movies aren’t available online. So I’m starting a list. You can add to it. https://t.co/WUMx8TRFTW

If you've watched Netflix's sweet romantic comedy Set It Up, you might wonder why the frazzled aspiring journalist played by Zoey Deutch reminds you of someone you already know from Hollywood. In fact, she looks a lot like the mother in the Back to the Future trilogy and Tom Cruise's love interest in All the Right Moves. Well, that's because Deutch's mother is none other than, drum roll please, the iconic Lea Thompson!
Thompson has been in so many shows and movies over the years that it's hard to keep track of her highly productive career. Before movies and TV shows, her interest in the arts started with professional ballet training. After Thompson devoted years to the craft, a ballet instructor told her that she was good, but just "too stocky."

Debuting 35 years after the original, Blade Runner 2049 hopes to get October off to a good start on the heels of record numbers this past September. And while the sci-fi drama is looking for big numbers, Fox is delivering some counter-programming in the survival story The Mountain Between Us, Lionsgate is releasing the animated feature My Little Pony and Focus expands the release of Victoria and Abdul nationwide. Blade Runner 2049 and its reported, $150 million price tag, will debut in 4,058 North American theaters (third widest all-time) this weekend while Sony and partner Alcon Entertainment will deliver the film worldwide. Industry expectations are for a $100 million debut globally, with approximately 50% of that coming from the domestic opening as industry forecasts range from $45-55 million. From a comparison standpoint, focusing on films such as Mad Max: Fury Road and Prometheus make good sense given the 30 years between films in the Mad Max...

Yikes. What a terrible weekend we just had, not only for the new movies released but also for the Weekend Warrior’s predictions. Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks’ Sully won its second weekend in a row with just under $22 million, but as far as the new movies, neither Lionsgate’s Blair Witch nor Universal’s Bridget Jones’s Baby did very well, putting the last nail in the coffin (hopefully) for sequels/remakes trying to play upon nostalgia that just isn’t there. (Good luck to the Rings movie opening next month!) Blair Witch ended up with $9.6 million to take second place and both Bridget Jones’s Baby and Oliver Stone’s Snowden ended up with around $8 million, so...

This Past Weekend:
As expected, Fede Alvarez’s thriller Don’t Breathe (Screen Gems), starring Jane Levy and Stephen Lang, won the weekend, but it did way more than we predicted, doing better than most movies released in the last weekend of August, winning the weekend with $26.4 million, pretty much double what I predicted. That’s a pretty great testament to the power of Screen Gems’ marketing campaign and that’s more than double what the movie cost to make. Jason Statham’s Mechanic: Resurrection (Summit/Lionsgate) didn’t fare as well as it opened in fifth place with $7.5 million in 2,258 theaters, about where I predicted. Of the more moderate releases, the Obama date movie Southside with You (Roadside Attractions) took in $3 million in around 800 theaters,...

Since its release 30 years ago, "Back to the Future" has been everyone's favorite time-travel movie. It's remained a must-see long enough for Marty McFly's own kids to enjoy it.
Even so, there's much you may not know about the beloved sci-fi comedy, from the unused ideas that popped up in other films, to why there has yet to (thankfully) be a reboot. To celebrate Back to the Future Day (October 21), here are 30 things you need to know about Marty McFly's first trip through time.
"Back to the Future 30th Anniversary Trilogy" is available to own now on Blu-ray & DVD.
1. Director Robert Zemeckis and co-screenwriter Bob Gale (pictured above) tried for years to create a time-travel story. The key came in 1980, when Gale was looking over his father's high school yearbook and wondered whether he and his father would have been friends if they'd both been teenagers at the same time.

Since its release 30 years ago this week (on July 3, 1985), "Back to the Future" has been everyone's favorite time-travel movie. It's remained a must-see long enough for Marty McFly's own kids to enjoy it.

Most film buffs know that Eric Stoltz was the original Marty McFly in Back to the Future before director Robert Zemeckis made the difficult decision to replace him with Michael J Fox.
Stoltz had already shot for five weeks as Marty when he was let go from the production, and now a new behind-the-scenes book - We Don't Need Roads: The Making of the Back to the Future Trilogy by Caseen Gaines - has shed fresh light on the dismissal.
According to accounts from cast and crew on the movie, Stoltz approached Marty in a "method" acting style and lacked the comedic lightness of touch Zemeckis and his co-writer/co-producer Bob Gale wanted for the part.
