The main music theme derives from the original theme of Bomber (1982).
The movie was originally intended as a spin-off of L'allenatore nel pallone (1984), directed by same Sergio Martino and starring among others also Gigi Sammarchi and Andrea Roncato. Originally it was thought that the character of Oronzo Canà (Lino Banfi) would have joined the team Marchigiana in the middle of the season, but at the end actor Lino Banfi couldn't take part to the movie, so his role was canceled. Anyway, in the sequel L'allenatore nel pallone 2 (2008) Oronzo Canà's team Longobarda competes for staying in the Serie A just against Marchigiana. There are at least other two connections between the two movies: the music theme of L'allenatore nel pallone is here reused in the scene where the negative results of Marchigiana are shown, and the jerseys of Marchigiana are the same of Longobarda with only a new sponsor sewed over.
There are many similarities between the Marchigiana and the real team Ascoli Calcio: they're both from region Marche in Central Italy, they both have an energetic president (the reference is to Costantino Rozzi, who was Ascoli's president at time of filming) and many scenes were filmed at the Stadium Cino e Lillo Del Duca in Ascoli Piceno where Ascoli Calcio plays its home matches. The Marchigiana wins the Mitropa Cup in the movie, as Ascoli Calcio really did two years after the movie was released, in 1987.
In the movie a match of the Mitropa Cup to be played in Germany is cited. Actually, no German team ever took part to the Mitropa Cup.
Andrea Roncato was actually a basket player rather than a football player in his youth.
