CBS has revealed the first look at its slate of new fall shows. In addition to revealing its 2024-2025 schedule, the network dropped teaser videos for each of its freshman series — including NCIS prequel NCIS: Origins, the new Matlock reboot, Young Sheldon sequel Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, and new father-son comedy Poppa’s House. Check out first looks at all four below. NCIS: Origins (This Fall) The trailer for this NCIS prequel series features a snippet of Mark Harmon‘s very last scene as Leroy Jethro Gibbs, flyfishing in Alaska. The voiceover teases, “We know how his story ended. Now see how it all began.” Taking over the legendary role is Austin Stowell. NCIS: Origins takes place in 1991, before the events of the main show, and is narrated by Harmon, who also executive produces the show along with Sean Harmon. The series finds Gibbs as a new special agent at...

CBS‘ fall 2024 lineup is going to be stacked. Joining the 18 returning shows in the fall on the network are new scripted dramas Matlock (starring Kathy Bates) and NCIS: Origins, comedies Poppa’s House (starring Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr.) and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage (starring Montana Jordan and Emily Osment), and competition show The Summit. Still to come in the midseason are new drama Watson (starring Morris Chestnut), The Amazing Race, and Hollywood Squares with Drew Barrymore as the Center Square in January as part of the new “Game Show Wednesdays” with The Price Is Right at Night and Raid the Cage. Notably, CBS will not be airing new episodes during the 10/9c time slot on Sundays during the football season (which tends to delay primetime). Watson will slot in with Tracker and The Equalizer—switching time slots next season—after the end of football. And ...

CBS has ordered its first new series for the 2025-26 broadcast season. The network has given a green light to Fire Country spinoff Sheriff Country, headlined by Morena Baccarin. The series order was announced Thursday during CBS’ presentation in Los Angeles.
In Sheriff Country, Baccarin stars as straight-shooting sheriff Mickey Fox, the stepsister of Cal Fire’s division chief Sharon Leone (Diane Farr of Fire Country), who investigates criminal activity as she patrols the streets of small-town Edgewater while contending with her ex-con father and a mysterious incident involving her wayward daughter.
The (then) potential spinoff was introduced when Baccarin guest starred in an April episode of the mothership series. Like the series’ pilot, the episode was written by Joan Rater and Tony Phelan from a story the Grey’s Anatomy alums co-wrote with series’ star Max Thieriot, whose real-life experiences inspired Fire Country. Thieriot also directed the planted spinoff episode.

CBS today became the first broadcast network to present its fall schedule. And, in line with CBS’ new strategy for long-term development and planning, the network announced its schedule for the entire 2024-25 season. It is contingent on IATSE making a new deal with the studios to avoid a strike. At the unveiling of the schedule, George Cheeks, President and CEO of CBS, said that they have contingency plans should a work stoppage occur but wouldn’t elaborate further. “If we need to delay, we are ready,” he said.
Also in accordance with CBS’ new long-term development strategy, the network announced a series pickup for Fire Country spinoff Sherriff Country, starring Morena Baccarin, for the 2025-26 season.

No second chances are coming for So Help Me Todd, CSI: Vegas and NCIS: Hawaii. But good news for CSI fans: there is another iteration in active development.

CBS executives were keenly aware of the elephant in the room Thursday as new co-ceo George Cheeks and entertainment president Amy Reisenbach opened their fall schedule presentation by addressing the latest rumblings in the sale process of parent company Paramount Global.
“It’s a super quiet, uneventful week for us,” Cheeks quipped as he kicked off the hourlong presentation just moments after news broke that Sony and Apollo submitted a $26 billion cash offer to buy Paramount Global.
Other than addressing morale — “we’ve all locked arms” and are “focusing on what we can control,” Cheeks said — both execs spent the press briefing at the Paramount offices in Hollywood focused on CBS and its 2024-25 schedule.
Cheeks and Reisenbach opened with a victory lap of sorts as CBS finished the strikes-impacted 2023-24 in first place, breaking a decades-old record set by the network with 16 straight season victories and 21 of the past 22 years.

While announcing its schedule for the 2024-25 TV season Thursday, CBS also got a head start on the season after that.
The network has formally greenlit Sheriff Country, a spinoff of its second-year drama Fire Country. Morena Baccarin (Deadpool, Gotham) will star, reprising her role from an April Fire Country episode that set up the spinoff.
Sheriff Country won’t premiere, however, until the 2025-26 season. CBS Entertainment president told reporters Thursday that the extra time will give the network breathing room to get the show right.
“We do long-term development at CBS now,” Reisenbach said. “[The extra year] gives us plenty of time to cast it and figure out how we want to produce it. It’s a huge opportunity for us and speaks to the kind of development we want to be doing.”

CBS is taking a page out of Netflix’s playbook by announcing its programming success in the billions of minutes watched.
If you were wondering what that might mean to a broadcast network, it measures out to 456 billion minutes of CBS programming watched in the first four months of 2024.
With two new hits on its hands — Tracker and Elsbeth — this doesn’t surprise us in the least.
Here’s the real measure of their success, though.
Viewers delivered over 30% more time spent in front of CBS programming than Netflix and over 231% more than all other streamers combined.
No wonder they’re patting themselves on the back.
Those are incredible numbers that often go unnoticed when you use traditional ratings tools to deliver the news.
Even crazier, the time spent watching CBS programming has increased by 5.8% over the same period in 2023.
People often wonder how shows can be considered a success...

If you read the headline and are asking yourselves, pilots? what pilots? — you are not wrong. It’s been largely a 2024 pilot season without pilots. A grand total of maybe one of them is expected to factor into any fall decisions as the broadcast networks prepare to unveil their schedules, starting with CBS tomorrow, May 2.
Needless to say, the broadcast pilot season is no longer the industry obsession it once was this time of year, with back-to-back disruptions from the pandemic and the dual Hollywood strikes providing the proverbial final nail in the coffin of the decades-old pilot cycle. But for tradition’s sake, here are some insights into the networks’ current development plans.

CBS' "Family Affair" wasn't the biggest sitcom of its era, nor was it the most groundbreaking, but it popularized a found-family formula that would endure for decades after its original run. The series followed a lifelong bachelor, Bill (Brian Keith), whose lifestyle is interrupted by the sudden arrival of his three orphaned nieces and nephews. Clueless about parenthood yet suddenly the dad of three grieving kids, Bill recruited the help of several other characters throughout the series — most notably, his loyal British manservant, French (Sebastian Cabot).
"Family Affair" ran for five seasons on CBS beginning in 1966, and though it doesn't appear in syndication as often as other shows from its era, the series is still fondly remembered by those who saw it. Unfortunately, the show is also remembered for the unusual amount of tragedy that befell its stars. Child star Anissa Jones died of an overdose just five years after the show ended,...

It came down to the wire, but NCIS: Hawai’i ultimately didn’t make the cut for next season at CBS. The news comes days before the network is set to announce its fall schedule on May 2 and before the Season 3 finale of Hawai’i is scheduled to air on May 6. According to sources, the episode was not meant to be a series finale and includes a tease for what was to come but fans won’t be left reeling by a major cliffhanger.
The cancellation is not a complete shocker since, as Deadline has been reporting, NCIS: Hawai’i was on the bubble. Still, the outcome is surprising since an effort was made to extend the well performing drama’s run for at least an abbreviated fourth and final season, with producers agreeing to a massive budget cut and open to other concessions in order to keep the show going.

Bewilderment is an understatement when it comes to describing fans’ feelings about So Help Me Todd’s cancellation news amidst its second season run. While many were more than sure that the show will have a long television future ahead, such a decision doesn’t really make much sense given incredibly good ratings that So Help Me Todd could boast of.
Though the series’ bright future is clearly doomed, fans are still trying to connect the dots behind the CBS' mistreatment — and some may have found a real reason for all the mess. Following the cancellation news several days ago, the show’s fans quickly took it to social media to share their feelings.
“So Help Me Todd felt like those classic USA Network shows that I loved. Heavy on the Psych vibes and I needed that to look forward to every week. Going to miss this gem,” said X user ReallyMighty.

End of the Road for Two Beloved CBS Series CBS has made the tough call to cancel CSI: Vegas after its third season and So Help Me Todd following its second. The network’s decision comes amidst a roster refresh introducing new dramas like NCIS: Origins, Matlock, and Watson, challenging the continuation of less watched series. In a surprising development, despite being solid performers in the ratings, both shows have struggled in comparison with other CBS dramas this spring, both in linear and multi-platform metrics. Specifically, in the most current linear Nielsen viewership data, CSI: Vegas ranked #21 and So Help

Breaking News CBS has canceled CSI: Vegas after three seasons and So Help Me Todd after just two. This development follows prior indicators that both shows were facing cancellation risks. Despite both series being reasonably strong in the ratings, CBS’s packed schedule and introduction of three new dramas for the 2024-25 season necessitated some tough choices. With newer ventures like NCIS: Origins, Matlock, and Watson joining the lineup, lesser-performing shows faced the axe. Viewership Dynamics The latest ratings showed CSI: Vegas at a viewership of 6.234M, while So Help Me Todd slightly lagged behind at 6.224M. These figures positioned them

Both “So Help Me Todd” and “CSI: Vegas” have been canceled at CBS, Variety has learned.
“So Help Me Todd” is currently airing its second season at the broadcaster, while “CSI: Vegas” is airing its third. Both shows are scheduled to air their season finales in May, which will now serve as series finales.
The two shows were some of the few CBS shows awaiting words on their fates for next season. The only other CBS shows with pending renewal statuses are “The Equalizer” and “NCIS: Hawai’i.” They are both solid performers, with “So Help Me Todd” averaging 7.7 million viewers an episode in multiplatform Live+35 and “CSI: Vegas” averaging 7.6 million. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, CBS simply did not have enough room on the schedule to bring them back.
In addition to its many previously announced renewals, CBS already has a number of new shows set to debut next season.

Streaming channels make headlines with mergers and syndication deals, but CBS has reached its level of network television success simply by maintaining a well-stocked lineup of scripted shows.
Boasting consistently high ratings, CBS proves there is indeed a large audience that tunes in for scripted television outside of streaming channels.
This is good news for viewers searching for network alternatives to reality shows.
The potentially bad news is that almost all of CBS's scripted shows are procedurals and reboots.
Is this narrow focus a conscious decision or just a response to upcoming structural changes at the network?
Two of their biggest comedies (Young Sheldon and Bob Hearts Abishola) are set to end in May. CBS's procedural landscape will also take a hit when Blue Bloods concludes its fourteen-season run this fall.

CBS's Elsbeth made a splash with its debut, but afterward, audiences had to wait two months for more.
When it returned, it established itself as a quirky, lighthearted murder mystery series, though there is a darker overarching plot surrounding the lawyer's secret investigation into her new boss.
By now, it's clear this series is nothing like The Good Wife despite being a spinoff, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's lost its way.
Elsbeth is far more formulaic than The Good Wife, so it may appeal to a different audience. The Good Wife was a dark satire (not necessarily funny) about complex legal issues and the sacrifices people made to gain political points. Elsbeth is none of that.
The title character was a quirky attorney on The Good Wife, and as expected, she's the same on Elsbeth. She also is the lead in a cozy mystery show, which may not...

Exclusive: After bringing back CSI: Crime Scene Investigation with CSI: Vegas, CBS is looking to revive another Jerry Bruckheimer Television-produced crime procedural from the 2000s. The network is in negotiations with Warner Bros. TV for a reboot of Cold Case, which aired on CBS for seven seasons from 2003-2010, Deadline has learned. The followup comes from the series’ creator/executive producer Meredith Stiehm.
Set 15 years after the original series’ final episode, the untitled Cold Case reboot would follow a new team of tenacious detectives who investigate cold cases across the Southwest.

Actor Beau Bridges is being honored in a place of special significance to his family.
The star of The Fabulous Baker Boys, The Descendants, Norma Rae, and more than 200 other films and television series received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Sonoma International Film Festival on Friday. His late father, actor Lloyd Bridges, traced his roots to the town in California’s wine country.

He was an altar boy at the St. Francis Church, and then he moved to Petaluma, went to Petaluma High School. So, this is his territory, and to have this acknowledgement here in the seat of our family, so to speak, is really special to me.”

His late father, actor Lloyd Bridges, traced his roots to the town in California’s wine country.
“I can really feel my dad, Lloyd’s spirit here with me in Sonoma, because this is where he was raised,” Bridges tells Deadline. “He was born in San Leandro and raised in Sonoma on Spain Street. He was an altar boy at the St. Francis Church, and then he moved to Petaluma, went to Petaluma High School. So, this is his territory, and to have this acknowledgement here in the seat of our family, so to speak, is really special to me.”

The premise of the 1977 sitcom "Three's Company" -- adapted from the 1973 British series "Man About the House" -- would likely never fly in 2024. Roommates Janet (Joyce DeWitt) and Chrissy (Suzanne Somers) require a third roommate to pay rent in their expensive Santa Monica apartment. They stumble across Jack Tripper (John Ritter), an aspiring culinary student whom they get along with. It so happens, though, that the building's landlord, Mr. Roper (Normal Fell), is ultra-conservative and refuses to let unmarried men and women share his apartments. To get around this contrived contingency, Janet and Chrissy tell Mr. Roper that Jack is gay. This satisfies the landlord but opens Jack up to homophobic jibes.
Fell eventually left the series and was replaced by the high-strung Mr. Furley, played by Don Knotts. Mr. Furley, it seems, required the charade to continue. Somers also left the show in its last two seasons and was...

CBS is firming up more of its lineup for next season.

“Ghosts and Fire Country are proven viewer favorites on both broadcast and streaming thanks to exceptional storytelling, talented actors and an ever-growing fan base,” CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said in a statement. “We are elated to keep the momentum going and bring them back to CBS next season.”
Ghosts, from CBS Studios in association with Lionsgate Television and BBC Studios’ Los Angeles production arm, is the network’s second-most-watched comedy behind Young Sheldon. The official cause of death for David Gail, 58, the former “Port Charles” and “Beverly Hills, 90210” actor who died last month after being found unresponsive by emergency personnel, has been determined, reports Deadline via a statement released by the late actor’s mother, Mary Painter.
According to a toxicology report, Gail’s cause of death has been determined to be the result of “brain and heart complications following drug intoxication involving amphetamines, cocaine, ethanol and fentanyl,” the outlet reported on Friday. The causing condition was anoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (a brain injury due to lack of blood flow) following resuscitation from cardiopulmonary arrest due to drug intoxication.
Following reports of Gail’s death, TMZ, citing law enforcement, reported that the actor died of a possible drug overdose, with his death under investigation by police, pending toxicology testing. No foul play was suspected.

Michael E. Knight’s time on “General Hospital” has ended, at least temporarily.
According to Soap Opera Digest, which first reported the news, the actor, who has played the recurring role of Martin Grey on and off since 2019, left the canvas last week when the character boarded a plane to visit his ailing mother.
The outlet noted that Knight’s exit is temporary but did not provide any indication as to when the character might return, particularly as the series is undergoing a shift behind the scenes with new head writers taking over from outgoing head writers Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor, the two primary writers behind the character’s introduction.

One may resist celebrity culture, but most people have at least a few actors from pop culture history that mean something to them, whether they're from the silver screen or the flickering box.
Actors know how to spark our emotions and suspend our disbelief. They embody our favorite stories and the visions of our favorite filmmakers. The stars of film and television have the privilege of immortalizing themselves in certain times and places. But it is not just themselves that they immortalize. In their best projects, they capture many complexities of emotion and culture that are relevant to millions. Steve McQueen and his Mustang in "Bullet," Warren Beatty and his freewheeling libido in "Shampoo," Anthony Hopkins and his empathetic presidential turn in "Nixon" -- for better or worse, actors color our memories of the past in both trivial and important ways.
It can be wistful, therefore, when an old favorite passes,...

When CBS announced its Matlock reboot in February of 2023, the casting news generated almost as much excitement as the revelation that one of TV's most beloved lawyers would be returning to the small screen.
One year later, Kathy Bates is still on board as the titular attorney, and Jason Ritter will portray her colleague Julian -- but a well-known newcomer will be taking over the role of Ritter's dad.
The network announced today that Beau Bridges will be joining the show as a powerful lawyer with the apt name of Senior.
According to a press release, Senior is "the managing partner of New York’s most prestigious law firm with an indomitable presence that immediately alters the temperature of any room.
"The man’s influence reaches far and wide, and although he loves his son, Julian (Jason Ritter), he might respect his daughter-in-law, Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), more," the announcement continues.

In between drags of cigarette smoke, Patty and Selma Bouvier are likely freaking out over the idea of a new Matlock series coming to CBS. The Matlock reboot gets a new star today with Beau Bridges joining the cast. Bridges replaces Jayme Sheridan, who starred in the pilot, to act opposite Kathy Bates in the updated version. CBS’ Matlock debuts in 2024-25 after the strike delayed production.
CBS’ Matlock hails from Jennie Snyder Urman and stars Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a sharp-minded septuagenarian with a stellar track record for solving cases. After being away from the game for years, Matlock rejoins the workforce at a distinguished law firm, where she uses her years of experience and unique tactics to achieve justice. At her new place of employment, Matty teams up with Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), a senior attorney and key rainmaker who thirsts for fair play. Olympia’s ex-husband,...

The past three years have severely impacted the broadcast television landscape.
Following a decade of growth — remember the days of 100 pilots? — the TV landscape on broadcast is experiencing further contraction because of production delays caused by both the pandemic and Hollywood’s historic dual strikes in 2023. The result is fewer pilots, a shift to year-round development and now fewer scripted originals as networks bulk up on unscripted fare, cut costs and continue to see development money shifted toward streaming.
On the leadership front, Frances Berwick now has lone oversight of NBC after Susan Rovner was let go from NBCUniversal as part of a larger restructuring, with ABC (Craig Erwich), CBS (Amy Reisenbach), The CW (Brad Schwartz) and Fox (Rob Wade) continuing with their current executives.
The biggest shift in broadcast is the shortened 2023-24 seasons of scripted fare, production on which was delayed from the traditional summer start to the...

Elderly television viewers in the 1980s and '90s had an amazing Hollywood ally in Dean Hargrove.
The small-screen veteran got his start in the 1960s as a writer for "My Three Sons" and "The Bob Newhart Show" (the unsuccessful precursor to the wildly successful 1970s sitcom of the same name), and received credit for some of the best episodes of "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." He wrote on arguably the greatest mystery series to ever air on network TV (we're not arguing if you read that passage and immediately thought "Columbo"), and kept Dennis Weaver employed as a producer on "McCloud."
But his most lasting impact on the medium was his 1985 - 2002 run as the producer of such old-people-go-a-sleuthin' shows as the "Perry Mason" television movies, "Jake and the Fatman," "The Father Dowling Mysteries," "Diagnosis: Murder" and the grandpappy of them all, "Matlock."

It’s late January, time when the broadcast networks typically kick off pilot season with their first pilot orders targeting the upcoming fall. Not CBS, which will not be picking pilots in the traditional window; instead the network has five scripted series already on tap for next season and a potential Fire Country spinoff in the works.
There has been nothing typical about the past couple of years between the pandemic and the double Hollywood strike, which disrupted the TV development cycle. Still, while networks like ABC and Fox had signaled a move toward year-round development before the pandemic, CBS had stuck closely to tradition, so many thought the network would eventually revert to its old ways.
That didn’t happen. In a major leadership change at CBS, Amy Reisenbach, the network’s head of current programming of 5.5 years, was named Entertainment President in November 2022. Just a couple of months later,...

"Tron" and "Caddyshack" star Cindy Morgan has died, TMZ is reporting. The actress who appeared in several hit films and TV shows, most notably in the 1980s, was 69 years old. The outlet confirmed the news with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, but the details surrounding Morgan's passing are not currently available.
Morgan began her career as a weather reporter, but her first on-screen acting role came in 1979, when she played Elaine in the erotic comedy "Up Yours." CBS has ordered an “NCIS” prequel series that will focus on a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs, Variety has confirmed.
The series is titled “NCIS: Origins” and will air during the 2024-2025 season. The show will be set in 1991 with Mark Harmon (who played Gibbs for nearly two decades) serving as narrator. The official logline states, “In the series, Gibbs starts his career as a newly minted special agent at the fledgling NCIS Camp Pendleton office where he forges his place on a gritty, ragtag team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks.”
Harmon will executive produce with his son, Sean Harmon, who originally brought the idea of a young Gibbs show to CBS. As Hollywood can’t wait to close the book on one of the most disruptive years in history, marked by a industry-paralyzing double strike that shut down production for more than six months, there is a lot of hope riding on 2024. There is also a dose of anxiety about what exactly the new normal might be.
The new year is expected to bring a selling frenzy. With few writers writing spec scripts during the work stoppage as most focused on strike duties, an anticipated post-strike spec market did not materialize. Unsure whether the main networks and platforms would be open for new business right away or busy attaching acting talent to their packages after the November end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, many producers opted to wait until after the holidays to take out their projects.

Broadcast pilot season was already mostly dead when the Hollywood strikes came along. But to paraphrase Billy Crystal in “The Princess Bride,” “There’s a big difference between ‘mostly dead’ and ‘all dead.’ Mostly dead is slightly alive!”
And that’s where pilot season now stands: Mostly dead — and yet still stubbornly, slightly alive. A relic of a bygone TV era, broadcast pilot season has been on the chopping block for years as networks aimed to get out of that springtime crunch by focusing on year-round development.
The fact is, pilot season was already so disrupted there was not much left to disrupt, strikes or no strikes. After all, last pilot season saw the broadcast networks pick up just six shows out of their combined 14 pilots. Compare that to pre-pandemic times, when it was a shock that the broadcast networks ordered just 60 pilots in early 2020.
But sales are still happening,...

The more things change, the more things stay the same.
That may as well be the motto for the five broadcast networks heading into the 2023-24 season as their corporate parents are increasingly focused on cutting costs, restructurings and streaming. To that end, three of the five networks have made leadership changes in the past year.
The biggest change comes at The CW, which is now majority controlled by Nexstar with former Pop topper Brad Schwartz now tasked with making the younger-skewing network profitable for the first time following the unexpected departure of TV’s longest-tenured president, Mark Pedowitz. Over at CBS, Kelly Kahl and his top lieutenant Thom Sherman and their sizable paydays were bounced in favor of former head of current Amy Reisenbach. Over at Fox, Charlie Collier — who led the network following the sale of its studio counterpart — bailed for Roku with the broadcaster tapping unscripted chief...
