London, Feb 19 (Ians) Filmmaker Christopher Nolan, who was named as the Best Director for the film ‘Oppenheimer’ at BAFTA’s, in his acceptance speech said that while his movie has finished on a “dramatically necessary note of despair” he wanted to spotlight the organisations who have worked over the years to “reduce the number of nuclear weapons in the world”.
“In accepting this I do just want to acknowledge their efforts and point out they show the necessity and potential of efforts for peace,” he added.
The director also said that it was an “incredible honour to be back home, to get this from BAFTA, in the festival hall where my mum and dad used to drag me to make me have some culture. Some of it stuck”.

Falling in Reverse frontman Ronnie Radke went on a profanity-laced onstage tirade against the very venue his band was playing on Friday night (December 8th). The singer lambasted The Armory in Minneapolis for asking for a 25% cut of the band’s merch that night, leading Radke to refuse to sell any items at the club.
Radke and company were playing the 93X Nutcracker radio festival along with Daughtry and Sleep Theory. Before launching into the song “Popular Monster,” the vocalist took some time to address the crowd.
“If you haven’t noticed, there’s none of our merch in the back,” he began. “It has nothing to do with the radio station, it has to do with this venue. This venue is trying to charge us 25% of our fees. … What that would mean is that we’d have to charge you guys way more to make any money. So what I did was [holds middle finger up], ‘Fuck them!

Demi Lovato sings “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” Paris Hilton shows off a meat cake, and Trixie Mattel performs a “Nutcracker” rendition in the official trailer for Roku’s A Very Demi Holiday Special. The one-minute video also features Tiffany Haddish wearing her Ugly Christmas Sweater and revealing her definition of Bar Mitzvah.
Even sportscaster Rich Eisen pops up in a brief appearance in the trailer for Demi Lovato’s 2023 Christmas special.
“We’ve had the honor of collaborating with Demi a number of times, and across documentaries, music videos, live performances, and podcasts, we’ve seen first-hand how uniquely multi-talented Demi is,” said Obb Founder and CEO Michael D. Ratner. “Yet again, in typical Demi fashion, A Very Demi Holiday Special delivers. We’re excited to be working with the Roku team on a project that brings some much-needed joy for the 2023 holidays!”

Here they come again, those holiday perennials. Movies, both good and bad, that year after year find their way back into theaters, onto small screens and deep into stockings that still get stuffed with digital discs.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas. A Christmas Story. Love Actually. It’s a Wonderful Life, of course. A Christmas Carol, ad infinitum. Nutcracker after Nutcracker after Nutcracker.
My personal favorite, released 19 years ago, on Nov. 10, 2004, by Warner Bros., is The Polar Express from the technophile director Robert Zemeckis.
This isn’t a sentimental choice, at least not in the conventional sense. It’s just that every time the picture pops up—and its seasonal DVDs are strung merrily across the Internet, from Amazon to Target—it reminds me of an important life lesson. That is: It’s much easier not to be an editor, especially at The New York Times.

There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.
In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.
Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

Director Rob Marshall is no slouch when it comes to working with musicals, going back to his first time working with Walt Disney Studios on the 1999 TV-movie adaptation of “Annie.” But working under the sea with a new, live-action version of the 1989 animated classic “The Little Mermaid” proved a challenge for even this seasoned director.
“It was exciting because it was so complicated, but [it was] definitely the most complicated one I’ve ever done,” Marshall told TheWrap. He cites his work on the 2018 feature, “Mary Poppins Returns,” as a foundation for working on this. “That animation sequence helped me with this because once again, working with nothing,” he said.
Marshall, a fan of complex choreographed numbers, wondered how that same kinetic energy could be brought to an undersea environment, particularly during the high-energy “Under the Sea” musical sequence.
Marshall ended up employing a technique utilized in Disney’s 1940 musical feature, “Fantasia.

For one delightful yet short-lived season from 2012-2013, Amy Sherman-Palladino's "Bunheads" appeared on ABC Family. According to Fast Company, the network was searching for their own version of the hit musical series "Glee," but Sherman-Palladino convinced them to focus on dance instead. The title "Bunheads" is based on an obscure slang term for ballerinas, and perhaps it was this niche perspective that led to the series' swift cancellation.

The Sloth is one of the strongest contenders still in the hunt to win season 1 of “The Masked Dancer.” He numbers among the final six who take to the stage on the January 27 episode. The Sloth secured his slot with a dazzling performance of the “Up Where We Belong” by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes on January 13. He is one of the clear favorites of the four judges.
We’ve been busy trying to figure out who is hiding inside the Sloth costume. To do so, we watched both of his performances (the other was on on episode 2 to “What I Like About You” by The Romantics). And we’ve reviewed his clues videos. Keep reading for all “The Masked Dancer” spoilers, including our best guess as to the real name of the Sloth.
We are sure that the Sloth is Maksim Chmerkovskiy who was a professional partner on “Dancing With the Stars” for 17 seasons.

If you’ve been spending as much time staying at home as I have this year, you’ll know how important — and necessary — a good television has become. With little to do during quarantine, binge-watching a favorite show or movie on one of the many streaming services out there became a nightly ritual, which then turned into a comforting routine. But saddled with a cheaper TV, and well, sometimes holding out for a clear and lag-free experience can be as risky as an under-developed chess move on The Queen’s Gambit.

Whoever says office drama does not spice up a party is so, so wrong. Industry Season 1 Episode 6 proved that.
Pierpoint & Co. had their annual Christmas party on "Nutcracker," and the episode did not disappoint at all.
It was a wild ride from start to finish, a night where our graduates kept finding themselves in tough situations. Well, how did things pan out in the end?
Things for Gus are not looking too hot right now. He has a more central role when Theo brings his girlfriend, Alice, to the party. Of course, Alice has no idea about Gus and Theo's history, making things just a tad awkward.
Not only did Theo make it clear that Gus should not speak to him on Industry Season 1 Episode 4, but now Gus has to watch the man he has feelings for being romantic with his girlfriend.

Monday Update, writethru after Sunday 12:26Pm post: The international box office continues to provide welcome surprises during the pandemic era. Where movie theaters are open and people feel safe, they turn up for new or enduringly exciting product that’s on offer.

She's not going to let the haters get her down! Jennifer Garner is always one to stay positive, especially when it comes to dealing with online trolls. The mom of three had a hilarious encounter with a mean Instagram user online, but her reaction was absolutely perfect. "For an instant jolt of [joy]—there is still time to hunt down your local Nutcracker!" Jennifer captioned a sweet video of herself with the performers of the American Theater Ballet's Nutcracker. "(Hey Southern California—@abtofficial has 7 shows left at the @segerstromarts)." While Jennifer looked like she was having so much fun in the post, there was one Scrooge in her comments section....

Sunday Am Update: Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, despite being No. 1 this weekend, didn’t make enough money in the Us to justify its $185M production cost before P&a. It came in with $36M, an opening that’s 48% below the original 2014 movie’s $69.4M. The live-action sequel to the Sleeping Beauty spinoff also didn’t wow in China, where it opened to an estimated $22.4M, another sour showing in Prc next to Paramount/Skydance’s Gemini Man, which also paled with $20.9M. Social media ratings for both of those titles weren’t great, with respective Douban ratings of 6.2 and 7.1. In regards to Maleficent 2, Maoyan was much higher than Douban with 9.1 and Tpp an 8.8.
The global take for Maleficent 2 is $153M. Now I’ve been informed from finance sources that it’s a safe start worldwide to get this movie to break-even (which is around $400M), highly contingent on legs overseas.

Jordan Peele's masterful sophomore effort is now heading for digital and Blu-ray home release...
It's not easy to follow up an instant classic debut with yet another spectacular film, but that's just what Get Out director Jordan Peele did when Us was released earlier this year. The movie received glowing reviews pretty much across the board, including by us out of SXSW, and did well at the box office too, which isn't easy for an original film to manage in these times of endless sequels and comic book dominance.
It helped that Peele sought out a magnificent cast for his second film, including Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss, and Tim Heidecker. There's not a lackluster performance in the bunch.
We won't go into the plot here, because it's a movie best seen without knowing too much, and because we know some of you may have...

Dumbo, the first of four Disney live-action adaptations this year based off its animated vault, is set to take off this weekend, though not with the stomp of its previous uber-hits, Beauty and the Beast ($357M worldwide debut), Alice in Wonderland ($210.1M Ww start) or even 2014’s Maleficent ($170M opening).
Dumbo, directed by Alice‘s Tim Burton, is a different type of movie, based off a much older Disney 1941 release than recent remakes. While Burton brought punch and snap to Alice and a groovy absurdist musical take to Warner Bros.’ Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which was further accentuated by Johnny Depp’s uncanny Michael Jackson-like take on Willy Wonka, Dumbo is slower, old-fashioned family movie. A global opening between $137M-$155M is what we’re hearing at this point in town with overseas between $80M-90M and domestic projections literally wild: Disney thinks it’s in the $50Ms,...

Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer’s Pet Sematary flips the Creed family narrative, breathes delectable darkness and while Act I takes its time building backwoods tension, once the tale’s famed “incident” occurs, it’s all-aboard this speeding vessel into an undead abyss. Stephen King adaptations are thriving as of late – It and Gerald’s Game, off the top of my head – and Pet Sematary does the prolific suspense author proud. Some might balk at the “switched” narrative, but there’s so much more to embrace about a rebirthed ballet-dancing daughter and Rachel Creed’s bolstered presence. And that’s all on top of the fact that Kölsch and Widmyer *earn* their jump scares.
Sometimes dead is better – but this mean-spirited remake isn’t one of those instances.
We pick up with the Creed clan having just moved to sleepy Ludlow, Maine as an escape from Boston’s hectic madness.

Misty Copeland was dancing on air while making The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. In this exclusive sneak peek at one of the bonus features included in the film's Blu-ray and digital release, Copeland—who had a featured role as the Ballerina Princess—speaks candidly and joyously about what it meant to her. "I never imagined I would be a part of a film of this magnitude, so when Disney wanted to have me be a part of it, it was just like a no-brainer. The Nutcracker was the very first ballet that I ever performed in, and I performed the role of Clara," Copeland said. "It makes sense, I think, to have ballet—to have dance—be a part of this film." Don Lusk, the last link to Disney Animation’s golden age of the 1930s, ’40s, and ’50s, has died at the age of 105. His passing was confirmed in an Instagram post by the Disney Animation Research Library.
Lusk joined The Walt Disney Company in 1933 and went on to work as a character animator for “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” “Pinocchio,” “Fantasia,” and “Bambi.” His best-known achievement is single-handedly animating the “danse arabe,” or “dance of the seven veils,” featuring a sultry goldfish during the Nutcracker sequence of “Fantasia.”
The legend goes that the stacked sketches of the fish doing her entire dance would stretch from floor to ceiling, it was that monumental and exhaustive a feat. But a feat of real delicacy and subtlety too. Lusk had previously worked with Eric Larson to animate the goldfish Cleo in “Pinocchio” along with the cat Figaro, whose movements are incredibly lifelike...

A producer on Twitter recently entreated critics not to craft Worst-of lists this year, and I couldn’t disagree more: Observers of film should absolutely be praising the best of cinema, but it’s only by remembering the shortcomings of the art form by which, ideally, artists can learn from their mistakes. And mistakes were definitely made this year:
10. (tie) “Peppermint”/”Proud Mary” /”Red Sparrow”: Can we have some strong screenplays to go with our strong female leads, please? This trashy trio of action sagas put guns in the hands of some of our most talented actresses but then forgot to supply them with things like character, motivation, or logic.
9. “Christopher Robin”: After dumping the last great “Winnie the Pooh” animated feature on a Harry Potter opening weekend, Disney added insult to injury by crafting this glum and tedious look at a grown-up Christopher (Ewan McGregor) in the throes of a midlife crisis.

The best Christmas movies deal in darkness and disaster as well as sleighbells in the snow…
It’s the Christmas present that nobody wanted. Disney’s Nutcracker revamp, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, stars Keira Knightley and cost about $130m, making it one of the most expensive Christmas-themed movies ever made. Now, with paltry earnings of only $20m on its first Us weekend, it has been declared a flop. As Forbes magazine noted in a doom-laden appraisal, “$130 million is way too much to spend on a Christmas movie”.
The film suffered production troubles, with the original director replaced during shooting, but perhaps something more than behind-the-scenes woes and an over-inflated budget is to blame. Reviewing the film in the Guardian, Cath Clarke missed “the melancholy darkness” of the original Eta Hoffmann story. And if there’s one ingredient Christmas stories need, it’s that. Nothing says festive cinema quite...

By now a lot of folks know enough about the Nutcracker story in order to recite it and be at least partially correct, but how many people would be able to make a correlation between the Nutcracker and a host of movies that could possibly be based off of it? There are only so many core story concepts in the world that can be drawn from and the Nutcracker touches upon a couple at least. This in turn makes it possible to link many other movies to the story in a way that depicts various elements that are used over

Two of eight-time Oscar nominee James Newton Howard’s three 2018 scores involved ballet and led to collaborations with high-profile artists from the concert world. Former L.A. Philharmonic music director Esa-Pekka Salonen conducted Howard’s ballet music for “Red Sparrow,” while current Phil director Gustavo Dudamel conducted his score for “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” with acclaimed artist Lang Lang at the piano.
“Red Sparrow,” the thriller starring Jennifer Lawrence as a Russian ballerina-turned-spy, demanded an opening 12-minute ballet that was “distinctly Russian sounding,” with harmonies and melodic gestures reminiscent of 20th-century Soviet composers. Howard is no stranger to classical writing, having recently recorded a violin concerto and he is currently writing a cello concerto to debut next year.
He was on Disney’s “Nutcracker” for two years. “The trick with ‘Nutcracker’ was figure out how much, and where, we could the Tchaikovsky – using as much as we possibly...

In today’s film news roundup, Molly Shannon’s “Wild Nights with Emily” and Motke Dapp’s “Other Versions of You” get distribution, Robert Patrick is up for a role as an FBI agent and “Nutcracker” writer Ashleigh Powell signs with CAA.
Acquisitions
Greenwich Entertainment has bought “Wild Nights with Emily,’ a dramatic comedy about Emily Dickinson starring Molly Shannon.
The film, which had its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival, was written and directed by Madeleine Olnek. Greenwich will release the film theatrically early next year.
Shannon’s role captures the vivacious, irreverent side of the poet that was covered up for years — most notably Emily’s lifelong romantic relationship with another woman, using Dickinson’s own words.
“Madeleine’s witty, madcap yet poignant and absolutely necessary version of Emily’s life is an Emily we’ve never seen before, but one that has been hiding in plain sight all along,...

2018 was a great year for the box office with plenty of record-breaking hits, but even a good year has its bombs. Here are ten of the most notable bombs this year, including one from the biggest blockbuster franchise of all-time.
“Solo: A Star Wars Story”– Budget: $250 million, Global gross: $392 million
Disney broke box office records left and right this year, but it also had the most high-profile bomb of the year with this “Star Wars” anthology film that told the origins of Han Solo. With lukewarm reviews and stories of a rocky, budget-inflated production hitting the press for months before release, “Solo” became the first “Star Wars” film ever to fail to gross $400 million worldwide. With “Episode IX” still a year away, Disney execs have said that they’re taking another look at how they handle future films in this hallowed series.

Last year saw the November box office top $1 billion in calendar grosses for just the third time ever and it was the first time since 2013. This year, November grosses are currently trailing 2017 by just -2.4% and this weekend sees the release of what is sure to be another big debut in the form of WB's sequel Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. The weekend also features the debut of what looks to be a strong opening for Steve McQueen's Widows while the PG-13 comedy Instant Family hopes to begin a long holiday run. Poised to finish atop the box office is Warner Bros.'s release of the second film in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and there is a chance it could come close to matching the $74 million opening for its predecessor, though WB is remaining conservative with expectations hovering around $65 million. Finding creative ways to sell a movie with no name stars and an unknown director can be difficult and often, a shorthand is to compare a movie to something with name recognition. In the case of Brett Mullen's feature film debut Bloody Ballet, the comparisons being made are to Suspiria, likely because both movies feature dancers, but the two movies are so far removed from each other in both theme and style that the comparison feels more like a detriment than a help.
Bloody Ballet tells the story of Adriana, a ballerina with a tormented past. When she lands the lead role in the Nutcracker, her carefully curated world begins to fall apart. “The Grinch” proved it’s never too early for some holiday cheer as the animated family flick stole the weekend box office with $66 million from 4,141 locations.
Illumination and Universal’s adaptation of the Dr. Seuss holiday tale now ranks as the best start for a Christmas film. Benedict Cumberbatch voiced the animated green grouch in “The Grinch,” which cost the studio $75 million to make. While it trails the start of Illumination’s latest Dr. Seuss story “The Lorax” ($70 million), “The Grinch” should benefit from the holiday corridor.
Newcomers “The Girl in the Spider’s Web” and “Overlord” weren’t able to best “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Fox’s Queen biopic showed staying power with a solid $30.9 million in its sophomore frame, representing a drop of just 41%. That brings its 10-day domestic total just shy of $100 million.
Paramount’s “Overlord,” produced by J.J. Abrams, was able to nab third place, opening with opened with $10 million from 2,859 theaters.

Illumination/Universal’s “The Grinch” has struck a chord with family audiences, earning a strong $66 million opening weekend from 4,141 screens to take the top spot on the box office charts. Universal reports that it is the largest opening weekend for a Christmas themed film in box office history.
With “Nutcracker and the Four Realms” failing to get any traction with families — it has yet to make back its $130 million budget with $96.7 million grossed globally after 10 days in theaters — “The Grinch” had almost all the attention of its core demographic, thanks in large part to an aggressive ad campaign that featured wisecracking billboards and TV spots that started airing all the way back during the Winter Olympics in February.

His heart may be small, but that doesn’t mean his box office returns will be.
“Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch” is looking to top the weekend box office in its debut with an estimated $67 million from 4,141 North American locations.
Benedict Cumberbatch voices the titular green Whoville denizen in Universal’s new adaptation of Seuss’ 1957 story from Illumination. Scott Mosier and Yarrow Cheney directed the Yuletide pic from a screenplay by Michael LeSieur and Tommy Swerdlow. Rashida Jones, Kenan Thompson, Cameron Seely, and Angela Lansbury also lent their voices to the feature, with Pharrell Williams narrating and music by Danny Elfman.
The film has an early Rotten Tomatoes score of 54% and has landed an A- CinemaScore.
The last “Grinch” adaptation, 2000’s instant classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” starring Jim Carrey and directed by Ron Howard, earned $55 million in its opening weekend, giving this year’s animated version a significant box office edge.

Disney’s “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” opened to a paltry $20.4 million ($58.5 million worldwide) last weekend, a box office bomb given its production budget of $130 million. But it is far from the first time a version of Tchaikovsky’s ballet has failed financially — and critically.
So why can’t Hollywood get “The Nutcracker” right? TheWrap spoke with three box office experts to find out.
But lets start with the sordid box office history of “The Nutcracker” on the big screen:
In 2010, Freestyle Releasing put out “The Nutcracker in 3D,” starring Elle Fanning, Richard Philipps and Richard E. Grant. It grossed only $195,000 (from 45 locations) its opening weekend, and was widely panned by critics.
Before that was “The Nutcracker,” released by Warner Bros. in 1993. It grossed just $2.2 million its opening weekend and received mixed reviews. Similarly, 1986’s “Nutcracker: The Motion Picture,” 1990’s “The Nutcracker Prince” and 1998’s “The IMAX Nutcracker” all underperformed at the box office.

While “Nutcracker and the Four Realms” failed to leave much of a mark on the box office, this weekend should see the start of a dominant period for family films, starting with Illumination/Universal’s “The Grinch.” The Dr. Seuss adaptation should post a solid opening, but will it be a major factor as more films fight for families in the coming weeks?
Universal is projecting an opening weekend of $50 million for “The Grinch” from 4,140 screens, with independent trackers projecting estimates as high as $62 million. By comparison, Illumination’s previous Dr. Seuss adaptation, “The Lorax,” opened to $70.2 million in March 2012 and grossed $214 million domestically. Both “Lorax” and “The Grinch” have reported $75 million budgets, consistent with other Illumination films.

She thinks ballet’s broken – and has a plan to fix it. The star of Disney’s Nutcracker reboot talks about racism, nude shoes and growing up bendy
‘Ballet was definitely my escape,” says Misty Copeland. “It was the first thing I’d ever experienced in my life that was mine – only mine, not my five other siblings’. It gave me a voice, made me feel powerful.”
When Copeland discovered ballet she was 13, living with her mother and siblings in a motel in California. She was a shy, slight child who rarely spoke and tried not to be noticed. Twenty-three years later, hers is the kind of transformation story even ballet might think far-fetched. In 2015, she became the first black female principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre – and with that a spokesperson, poster girl, and bona fide star. Barack Obama sought her out as an adviser, Prince invited her on tour,...

Disney's The Nutcracker and the Four Realms topped China's box office over the weekend with a decidedly less-than-festive $10.9 million opening haul.
The downbeat performance from the pricey Disney holiday title wasn't nearly enough to pull the Chinese film market out of its ongoing fall-season funk.
Total ticket sales for the frame were just $39.9 million (Rmb 276.3 million), almost half of the $73.6 million the market generated during the same weekend last year, when Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok was filling Chinese cinema seats. Other data from leading Asian box-office tracker Artisan Gateway ...

Three weeks from now, Disney should be back to making box office money hand over fist with “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” but it’s always noteworthy when the top studio in Hollywood suffers a flop as big as “Nutcracker and the Four Realms.”
Filmed on a pricey $130 million budget, “Nutcracker” has posted a domestic opening this weekend of just $20 million and $58.5 million worldwide. With family films like “The Grinch,” “Fantastic Beasts” and the aforementioned “Ralph” headlining the rest of the November slate, all signs point to “Nutcracker” dropping down the charts very quickly in the weeks to come.
“Obviously, while we try to put all our films in the best position to succeed, some might not connect as much as we hope,” said Disney domestic distribution head Cathleen Taff.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” performed above most expectations with an estimated $50 million total, a terrific result for this film. It’s also the fifth title to open to over $40 million since Labor Day. That’s three more than last year, which had only “It” and “Thor: Ragnorok” (although both were over $100 million).
“Bohemian Rhapsody” is also the lowest number 1 opening for this weekend since 2013; prior years had Marvel and Bond. While this weekend’s total gross is lower than last year — unsurprising, since 2017 had “Thor: Ragnorok” — people who did go to the theaters saw a wider swath of movies. “Thor” claimed more than two thirds of total business, and only two films grossed over $7 million. This year, we had six.
In the debit column, two major releases saw shortfalls with “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” and Tyler Perry’s latest, “Nobody’s Fool.” However, their struggles were more internal.
