Deadening Most Dangerous Game rip-off
Leofwine_draca7 August 2016
ANGEL OF VENGEANCE is another waste-of-time action movie from cult director Ted V. Mikels. It has a lot of incident and a lot of noise, but nothing much seems to happen in it, much like Mikels's fellow movie TEN VIOLENT WOMEN. Jannina Poynter plays a military-themed woman who is kidnapped by a manic survivalist group who go around killing motorbike riders in lots of extraneous and random scenes.

Poynter is raped and sentenced to death, but asks for a chance to prove herself by becoming the prey in a hunt, MOST DANGEROUS GAME-style. Inevitably the tables are turned and the bad guys soon wish they'd never encountered Poynter. The plot sounds interesting and it is, inherently, but as with pretty much all of the Mikels films I've watched, the awful execution lets this film down. It's a surprisingly tame and restrained piece in which all of the contentious material is kept off screen and there's not a single action scene to get excited about here. Instead it's something of a chore to sit through, and definitely what you'd call Z-grade.

Female First Blood, grade Z style
actionfilm-219 January 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I faintly recall at least one review for this film here on IMDb, but it's since disappeared, so I'll post my two cents for anybody who may stumble upon this obscurity.

War Cat is Tina Davenport, the daughter of a lean, mean, and unfortunately, deceased Green Beret. She is writing a book or something on her late father, and as all writers do (at least in the movies) she goes to a remote cabin in the mountains to work. Actually it's not as remote as the video box summary describes, it sits in a small town where she goes jogging everyday in shorts and tank top, drawing the attention of a man-brute who happens to belong to a depraved survivalist group. Mr. man-brute kidnaps Ms. Davenport and takes her to camp. The leader of the group is hardcore survivalist material and none too happy about womenfolk being dragged into camp as it takes away from time better spent cleaning and oiling guns, sharpening knives, burying caches of food, and whatever else survivalist do when preparing for the apocalypse. So it's execution time for the poor girl (after being violated by the entire camp no less, thankfully this happens off-screen), rather harsh punishment for being kidnapped but if you want logic your not likely to find it in a film called War Cat. At any rate, she's nothing if not quick thinking and challenges the group's survivalist skills by offering herself as human prey. She soon proves to be quite a survivalist herself.

Well, I tend to watch a lot of grade B action films, and War Cat is certainly below B quality in terms of production value due to, not a low budget, but a very meager budget. The acting ranges from fair to poor. The tone of the film is a little strange in that there is not too much in the way of nudity or blood, and like many B films War Cat is absurd and unintentionally funny so the cheese factor is there, but there are violent moments, in particular the reaction at one point by one of the female actors is a little unsettling as she is most convincing at coming unhinged. Or perhaps it simply stands out because of the silly nature of the rest of the film.

The average film viewer may want to avoid War Cat, but with that said I will admit to enjoying the film and would recommend War Cat to that small audience who enjoys campy films that entertain with their pure silliness, though don't know if even they should pay E-Bay prices for the (currently) out of print VHS.

A bit sluggish and convoluted for the silly fun it should be

Warning: Spoilers
Definitely fun in parts (obviously depending on your taste) but this movie struggles to find its pace and gets too sidetracked at times. There are better "so bad it's good" movies to watch.

Warning: synopsis/spoilers -

Tina is harassed by Manni, a dimwitted member of a desert survivalist group (who seem equally incompetent and dangerous when they slaughter the dirt biking Thrill Killers). She is captured & released so they can track her down for training, and she basically kills them all. A weird side plot has Gene Simmons bad guy type and friend killing randomly (including a caged pet rabbit who is told, "You ain't got no mama, ain't got no papa"). One bad guy hilariously says "I learned this in Nam," proceeds to tie a shirt around his head like a ninja mask and continues, "And don't you forget it".

Dull survivalists action movie
lor_20 April 2023
My review was written in May 1987 after a Cannes Film Festival Market screening.

"Angel of Vengeance" doesn't make much of its premise: gung ho survivalists killing folks in a remote mountain spot as practice for the war they believe is imminent. Pic is relentlessly dull.

Jannina Poynter toplines as a young woman researching a book about her late father, a military man, who has several run-ins with the survivalists led byu single-minded David O'Hara. About to be summarily executed as were the rest of the group's unlucky prisoners (including members of a local biker gang, called Thrill Killers), she talks O'Hara into letting her act as hitman prey for the troops, and then proceeds to skillfully kill off all of them.

Until Poynter goes on the rampage in the final reel, the picture unfolds listlessly with aloof camerawork, weak acting and mundane action scenes. A parallel subplot of a couple of thrill-seeking guys also on the rampage makes for filler leading to a predictable final twist.

You could do a heck of a lot worse.

Warning: Spoilers
Tina Davenport (Poynter) arrives in a small California town, and all she wants to do is write a biography of her late father, a Green Beret. In her off hours, she goes spear fishing and sings Bob Dylan songs in the woods. Her rural idyll is spoiled when she stumbles upon a rumble between a local dirtbike gang, The Thrill Killers, and a self-made platoon of Doomsday Preppers out in the desert. Knowing she's got what it takes, she makes an offer to Head Prepper Major Hargrove (O'Hara) to have him and his comrades hunt her in the desert, Most Dangerous Game-style. Naturally, they agree, but she then begins to turn the tables on them as the battle for survival turns deadly...for them! As if all that wasn't enough, a duo of "Random Killers" (that's actually how they're credited) are on the loose and causing havoc. Will Bo Gritz make a surprise appearance? Or maybe Blake Bahner? One never knows, but one thing we do know: Tina Davenport is the ANGEL OF VENGEANCE!

Finally, here is the mashup of Savage Justice (1988) and Savage Instinct (1991) we've all been waiting to see. It's a little surprising they didn't call this Savage Angel. Anyway, director Ted V. Mikels brings the no-budget drive-in horror/exploitation style we all know from such classics as The Corpse Grinders (1971) and Blood Orgy of the She-Devils (1973) to this, but here applies it to an action romp. The idea of dirtbikers vs. Preppers in some sort of a desert-set brawl is a good one, and introducing a tough-gal character like Tina into the mix amps things up even more, but, sadly, the movie overall doesn't live up to that promise.

That's not to say there aren't some points in the win column for Angel of Vengeance. It's populated by a lot of people with interesting faces, and the desert setting is a good one (we're told, quite threateningly, by Hargrove that "It's a box canyon!!"). The dirtbikers haven't graduated to the leather jackets of their Harley-riding counterparts, so they all have Thrill Killers M.C. T-shirts. Not quite as intimidating, but they're getting there. It's like training wheels. The Preppers love camouflage - not just their outfits, but their truck and their hideout are all camouflage. It's a wonder we can see them at all. (Not to rain on their parade, but it's all green camo in the desert, which doesn't help all that much.)

Happily, Angel of Vengeance is a scant 73 minutes (on Amazon Prime anyway). It still felt a little long because not a lot happens and there isn't really any character development to speak of, but it's still better than 90-plus minutes. So while the majority of the goings-on are outdoors and characters' voices still sound marred by microphone distortion, it never gets too bothersome because it all ends relatively quickly. While this is the only screen credit for Jannina Poynter, shout-outs to the other cast members we'd like to give are for Carl Irwin who played Ron and Mary Bee who played "Old Lady" - a woman who sells bread door-to-door and looks like she would have been more at home on the set of Mama's Family. Irwin went on to have a solid career as a character actor, while, like Poynter, this was the only credit for Mrs. Bee. Watch out for them, as they enliven the proceedings.

Interestingly, fellow "trash film" auteur Ray Dennis Steckler started the film, but Mikels completed it. You really can't tell; their styles are very similar. That would also explain why the dirtbikers are called The Thrill Killers, after Steckler's 1964 outing of the same name (maybe he had some promotional shirts lying around?) The whole thing concludes with the end-credits song "Take Me Home" not by Phil Collins, but by T. Craig Keller, who also played Craig, one of the Preppers, and acted as an associate producer. In the end, Angel of Vengeance (AKA Warcat) is far from an action classic, but it features some blow ups, gun shootin' and a handful of silly fights. For those out there that like their action off the beaten path and are willing to plumb the depths a little bit, you could do a heck of a lot worse.

Pretty Boring All Around

Angel of Vengeance (1987)

* 1/2 (out of 4)

Tina Davenport (Jannina Poynter) arrives in a small town where she hopes to do some research on her hero father. Soon she runs into a crazy group of survivalists who rape her. They should have finished her off because soon Tina is coming back for vengeance.

ANGEL OF VENGEANCE is another low-budget action picture from cult director Ted V. Mikels. The director is certainly a cult item because he truly made some of the worst movies out there but I still find myself watching them simply because the man himself was so interesting. He really did seem like a great guy but sadly his movies really weren't all that good and that's certainly true for this film, which is pretty much a remake of THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME.

On one hand I admire someone like Mikels who just goes out there and films movies. This one here actually has a lot more effort than most of his pictures and it seems the budget is a tad bit higher than normal but there are still all sorts of problems here. The biggest one is that none of the characters are all that interesting. The lead female might look good but do we really care about her character or what happens to her? I didn't. The villains are more like cartoon characters and not once do you feel threatened by them.

This leads to another problem in the fact that there's no tension in the film. There's no drama or suspense so add this to the fact that you don't care about the characters and it's hard to really hold any interest in the film. There are some decent explosions and the locations look great but there's just not much here to keep you entertained.
