When Italian horror comes to mind, it’s the unholy trifecta of Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci, and Mario and Lamberto Bava that dominate the discussion. However, Michele Soavi is another essential – albeit underrated – Italian horror savant from the ‘80s and ‘90s who cut his teeth as Argento and Fulci’s apprentice, before ascending to become their peer through formative films like StageFright and Dellamorte Dellamore (aka Cemetery Man). Soavi has a flair and appreciation for immersive and complex camera visuals, intimidating antagonists, and gruesome gore, all of which are on display in the director’s most polarizing film, The Church, which now celebrates its 35th anniversary.
This cinematic achievement began as Demons 3, the third film in Argento and Lamberto Bava’s popular supernatural horror series. However, the horror sequel soon pivoted into an original project early on in its production after Bava walked and Soavi took over and completely rewrote the script.

While Warner Bros. continues to sit on his adaptation of the Stephen King novel Salem’s Lot, filmmaker Gary Dauberman has gone on to sign a first-look feature deal with Sony’s Screen Gems, where he is expected to “create projects for himself while curating a slate featuring established and up-and-coming filmmakers.” One of the projects he has set up at Screen Gems is the video game adaptation Until Dawn, which will be directed by David F. Sandberg. Now Deadline has revealed that Dauberman is going to be producing a film called Ushers for Screen Gems… and we have no idea what Ushers is about, because it’s based on a short story by author Joe Hill (who happens to be a son of Stephen King) that has never been published!
Dauberman and his team at the Coin Operated production company will develop and produce Ushers, with Coin Operated’s President,...

August’s home media offerings are wrapping up in a big way this week, and I hope you’ve got your wallets ready because there are a ton of releases that genre fans are going to want to add to their collections. Fulci fans should be excited for the arrival of both The House by the Cemetery and The New York Ripper in 4K, courtesy of Blue Underground, and Severin is having their own Fulci fiesta this week, too, with their releases of Aenigma, Demonia as well as the recent documentary Fulci for Fake.
Scream Factory also has a killer lineup of titles headed home on Tuesday, including the Collector’s Edition of Tales from the Darkside: The Movie and the Universal Horror Collection: Volume 6.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for August 25th include Dead Pit, The Beast Must Die, The Last Victim, Live Feed, Gemini, Hallucinations, and Alien Scum.

YouTuber Liza Koshy has taken to Instagram to apologize after a video of her using a mock Asian accent resurfaced. Another clip included footage of Koshy pretending to speak Japanese.
“What I once thought of as ‘innocent jokes,'” wrote Koshy, “were actually tainted with implicit bias, and what might have been intended as ‘playful’ was actually to some, incredibly painful. And for that, I am sorry.”
One video, which was originally posted in 2016, shows Koshy pretending to have an Asian accent while tasting candy from Japan and Hawaii. Then-boyfriend — and fellow YouTuber — David Dobrik is also in the clip.
Dobrik says, “It’s not racist. That’s like the sounds I hear when they talk.”
“No, it’s not racist as long as I keep saying no,” says Koshy.
In a second video, the couple pretend to be able to speak Japanese after eating the candy.

I’ll never forget reading about LaserDiscs in Fangoria magazine and frothing at the mouth as they described deluxe editions of my favorite films. Glorious widescreen presentations, commentary tracks, ‘making-of’ featurettes, special effects tests, theatrical trailers – all of it wrapped inside very cool packaging and priced to own for the smallest of the niche markets.
Being in high school throughout the mid-90s, it simply wasn’t feasible to own a LaserDisc player, let alone the pricey deluxe editions of Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Phantasm available on that format. There was a better chance of seeing God than bagging enough groceries to be able to afford them.
It was Anchor Bay who gave younger fans their first taste of ‘elite’ collecting through a small series of widescreen VHS tapes in the late ‘90s. When I finally got my hands on a widescreen copy of Halloween, it was...

One of Arrow Video's great success stories is the championing of Dario Argento's work on home video in the UK. I know what some of you may be thinking, and perhaps championing Argento isn't exactly controversial position to defend, but no one had really taken up the challenge of rescuing many of these Argento features in Britain from BBFC cut purgatory. Many of Argento's features have been sliced and diced by the BBFC, and for the most part, home video distributors have made do with the cuts in order to have a marketable product. Arrow Video, however has taken some of these very same films, including their recent Blu-ray/DVD release of Inferno, back to the BBFC for reclassification, and they won! They are currently awaiting a decision on Deep Red (Profondo Rosso), which has yet to be seen completely uncut in most areas of the world. This is...
