Starlings, BBC2 Play
kevin-456-72774222 August 2012
An inspiration on how a person from ordinary roots with native intelligence, can overcome education and background obstacles to rise to any height. Also a perfect summation of the false and the superficial in the eighties Thatcher era, when 'Service' was the new economy instead of manufacturing. Irony when the hero, who exploits the idiocies of class and snobbery to rise above them, is showing a coach full of Japanese around...but that spoils the story.

There are multiple sub-plots to savour, a bitter friend who fails where Gary succeeds and turns up later to poke barbs at his venality in swimming in that sea. The decadence of the girlfriend from the upper classes who uses him, then is used in turn.

I would dearly like to get hold of the original or a decent resolution file of this play, to treasure and whenever feeling fed up, play again.

The perfect summary of Thatcher Britain
flexwing-0335625 October 2023
Perfect summary of Thatcher's Britain, clever and entertaining story of a working class Northern lad, titled Starlings, as they have ability to imitate other birds, to get on in life. Michael Maloney and the gorgeous Lyndsey Baxter, star in this bittersweet drama with our hero climbing the greasy ladder, by observing the failings of those above and climbing past them. Sincerely wish it was possible to locate the original screenplay. Did find a fellow fan who posted episodes on YouTube, and managed to copy them for a refresher, but sadly resolution reflects limitations of probably, a VHS recording.
