As is annual tradition, Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden has announced this year’s 25 film set to join the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. Selected for their “cultural, historic and/or aesthetic importance,” the films picked range from such beloved actioners as “Die Hard,” childhood classic “The Goonies,” the seminal “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” and the mind-bending “Memento,” with plenty of other genres and styles represented among the list.
The additions span 1905 to 2000, and includes Hollywood blockbusters, documentaries, silent movies, animation, shorts, independent, and even home movies. The 2017 selections bring the number of films in the registry to 725.
“The selection of a film to the National Film Registry recognizes its importance to American cinema and the nation’s cultural and historical heritage,” Hayden said in an official statement. “Our love affair with motion pictures is a testament to their enduring power to enlighten, inspire and...

Since 1989, the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress has been accomplishing the important task of preserving films that “represent important cultural, artistic and historic achievements in filmmaking.” From films way back in 1897 all the way up to 2004, they’ve now reached 725 films that celebrate our heritage and encapsulate our film history.
Today they’ve unveiled their 2017 list, which includes such Hollywood classics as Die Hard, Titanic, and Superman along with groundbreaking independent features like Yvonne Rainer’s Lives of Performers, Charles Burnett’s To Sleep with Anger, and Barbara Loden’s Wanda. Also making this list are a pair of Kirk Douglas-led features, Ace in the Hole and Spartacus, as well as Christopher Nolan’s Memento and more. Check out the full list below and you can watch some films on the registry for free here.

There are a lot of actors who wish their old audition tapes would just disappear -- especially the A-listers in this video, because a lot of these auditions are for roles they didn't get. So, watch Brad Pitt and Robert Downey Jr. audition for "Backdraft," eight-year-old Leonardo DiCaprio audition for "The Outsiders," and Scarlett Johansson try her best to get a part in "Jumanji."
Also, everyone is so young. Like, crazy young.

Leonardo DiCaprio is a quadruple threat: Actor, producer, game show contestant and person who doesn't win things. The latter skill sets go as far back as 1990, as evident in this clip uploaded by VideoSurferYNX and surfaced by Buzzfeed. The then-15-year-old actor, at the time best know for his role on Parenthood but having also played "Kid Fighting Scout" in The Outsiders and "Darlene's Classmate" on Roseanne (his best work to date, playing Luke Brower on Growing Pains, was just around the corner), appeared on Fox's game show Fun House. The show was no Legends of the Hidden Temple, but did involve Leo dressing as Godzilla, getting hit with "schmutz bombs,"...

Long before they were co-workers at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, "Mad Men" stars Jay R. Ferguson (Stan Rizzo) and Vincent Kartheiser (Pete Campbell) were teen heartthrobs in the '90s.
As Pajiba recently pointed out, native Texan Ferguson was plucked out of obscurity to play the role of Ponyboy Curtis in the TV adaptation of the feature film "The Outsiders" in 1989. He moved out to Los Angeles at the age of 14 for the part and has been working pretty steadily since.
Here he is in 1990:
And another picture of young Ferguson with David Arquette, who played Two-Bit in "The Outsiders," at the Earthwalk Benefit in 1990:
Ferguson was quite the teen magazine regular:

After "The Outisders" was cancelled 13 episodes in, Ferguson was cast in the Burt Reynolds-fronted sitcom "Evening Shade." He starred on the CBS comedy as Reynolds' character's eldest son throughout the show's four-season run.

The Us union stepped in to prevent the sale of tapes by actors including Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow
A high-profile auction of tapes featuring A-list Hollywood stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe and Brad Pitt auditioning for roles has been cancelled following complaints by the Us's largest acting union.
The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) stepped in after it emerged that video tapes made by casting directors for 2001's Oscar-winning A Beautiful Mind, a 1990 TV adaptation of the 1983 brat pack drama The Outsiders and the 1991 firefighter thriller Backdraft were due to go under the hammer. The tapes included DiCaprio's failed audition for the role of Ponyboy in Frances Ford Coppola's little-seen small screen take on The Outsiders, Crowe's audition for the role of maths genius John Nash in Ron Howard's A Beautiful Mind (which eventually won him a Bafta and a nominated for an Oscar for...

Three anonymous casting directors have put 54 early Hollywood audition tapes on the auction block. On Friday, "The Today Show" aired an amusing reel of these endearingly awkward auditions. Clips include early readings from Leonardo DiCaprio vying for a role in the 1990 TV series "The Outsiders," Brad Pitt auditioning for Ron Howard's 1991 "Backdraft" and Nicole Kidman in a particularly dramatic bid for a part in 1991's "Shattered." None of these now-Hollywood stars were cast. Check out the short take of 2013 Oscar-nominee Helen Hunt auditioning for the role in "Jurassic Park" that ultimately went to Laura Dern. According to Julien's Auction House, whose Martin Nolan and Darren Julien joined Matt Lauer on "Today," the 54 tapes are estimated for anywhere between $2,000-$4,000. Check out the auditions, and some very dated outfits, below: Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy...

Darren Julien and Martin Nolan of Julien's Auction House brought a valuable property with them to "Today," where Matt Lauer was bestowed early audition tapes featuring A-list movie stars. Three casting directors have released these 54 tapes to the public, and if you have $2000-$4000 bucks to spare (as Julien estimates the bidding prices), you may need a very good reason to buy a Vcr...or a VHS-to-dvd converter.
Included in the tapes are Leonardo DiCaprio auditioning for the TV version of "The Outsiders" in 1991, Gwenyth Paltrow and Helen Hunt trying to nail Laura Dern's role in "Jurassic Park," and Brad Pitt, Robert Downey Jr. and Keanu Reeves all trying out for William Baldwin's role in 1991's "Backdraft." You can also see a young Nicole Kidman trying out for a movie called "Shattered."

Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Nicole Kidman weren't always just offered roles -- they had to audition, for better or worse, as proven by a few never-before-seen casting tapes that aired on Friday's "Today Show." The segment started by showing DiCaprio, the star of blockbusters like "Titanic" and "Inception," auditioning for the role of Ponyboy Curtis in the 1990 television series "The Outsiders." His early reading is just one of many (54 to be exact) that have been provided by three anonymous casting directors who are auctioning them off to the highest...
